Mark Nepo, my eternal writing brother, was, as always, a fierce companion, a rock upon which I can always build my little hut by the sea of words. When I get lost, he is the one who comes to find me and brings me home.

Several people read early drafts and offered valuable comments, suggestions, and insights. These include, among others, my beloved friend Richard Heckler; Allan Lokos and Susanna Weiss, who offered valuable interpretations at the beginning; Laura Loescher, who read and responded to the chapters I shared with her; and Alice Warner, who read everything and offered clear, unambiguous instructions as to what to do.

Charmaine Hughes (who began as my personal assistant but has become my life supervisor and dear friend) took me to breakfast to celebrate getting approved to write the book—and fifteen minutes into our pancakes, she informed me she was going to make sure I took care of myself while writing. She was going to change my diet and make sure I slept, hiked, and didn’t take on too much. She then hired a personal trainer to make sure I didn’t cheat. I was then, and am now, deeply touched by her loving care and compassionate support. Charmaine ran my life so that all beings were cared for.

By the way, Simon Moylan, the personal trainer, abused me constantly and never let me cheat. We did laugh together quite a bit, usually at my expense. I still actually like him.

Kate Kennedy has been my thoughtful, supportive editor, allowing me a great deal of latitude to go where I felt called while firmly putting her hand to the tiller when she believed I needed to set a different course. She has been a comfort and
a delight to work with. And Shaye Areheart saw something in this book that she felt was deeply important; I am indebted to her conviction and humbled by her faith in me to hold it well. And as has been true for twenty-five years, Ben and Carolyn Whitehill made sure I was fed, comforted, and held in love always.

Loretta Barrett, my agent for now twenty years, always believed in the integrity, timing, and necessity for this book to be useful for people. Loretta has always believed in my work and always believed in me. I cannot imagine a career as a writer without her perfect ear, her sharp eye, and her generous heart.

Nahum Ward-Lev is my wise, gifted, generous, and thoughtful spiritual director and guide. When I found myself wandering in the desert, he provided manna, prayer, mercy, humor, and a reliable inner light to illuminate any path required to find my way.

Finally, Kelly Wendorf, a gifted writer and editor in her own right, became my most intimate collaborator and fellow pilgrim in discovering together how we might really, authentically, live each day as a sacrament of sufficiency. Kelly helped me learn to follow the invisible thread of grace by listening together—every hour of every day—for the shape, the taste, the feel of the next right thing. She brought into my life the full, visceral saturation of enough in my body, heart, and soul.

It is to her, for more reasons than I could ever name here, that I dedicate this book.
