CHAPTER
15

What in the hell was taking him so long? I shifted on the air mattress, sending the bottle of wine rolling off and knocking against the wall. Good thing I hadn’t uncorked it yet. I peered over the side of the mattress, trying not to move too far or too fast so the damn thing bucked me off again. We’d been in a continual wrestling match and I was seriously reconsidering the satin sheet that I’d thrown over it. Clearly that was something they only used in pornos, but I’d never had them so how the hell was I supposed to know?

I leaned over
and stretched toward the bottle, trying to grab it without losing my balance.

“Don’t move!”

I screamed and fell head first onto the floor, my sexy nighty flipping all the way up to my waist and exposing my bare ass. As my weight shifted, the air mattress tipped, went airborne, and as I landed my leg hit the edge and sent it sailing toward whatever dumbass had just scared the ever loving shit out of me.

I screamed again as fear welled up because I thought the headlights h
ad been Jesse’s but he wouldn’t have yelled at me. While I was trying to work it out in my brain, something hard and nasty connected with the mattress, popping it and sending a giant whoosh of air straight into my face.

I crawled across the floor as fast as my legs would go. I had no idea how to get away but I needed to find the bottle of wine so I at least had a weapon.

“Sasha?”

My fingers touched the bottle and I spun around, clutching it to my chest. “Jesse?”

He batted the remnants of the torn air mattress away and stared at me and the room, now a bit askew from when I’d decorated it. His mouth opened and closed, then he blinked. “I thought you were at Kerri’s?”

“I wanted to surprise you.”

He laughed. “Holy shit. Mission accomplished.”

He set what looked like a tire iron down and leaned it against the wall.
“Were you armed?”

“I didn’t know who was in here?”

“You were going to bash me?”

“No. I mean, yes, but not you.” He sighed and shook his head, then crossed the room and pulled me into his arms. “Wow. And just when I think we could have a normal night out.”

I bristled in his arms. “Are you laughing at me? I worked really hard at this.”

He held me away. “Wait. Let’s try something.”
He maneuvered me back to where the air mattress had been, sat me down and left the room, lifting his finger and asking me to wait.

He grabbed the tire iron, left the room, and pulled the door closed behind him. I just stared. “What the
—?”

“Sasha?” he called gently from the other side of the door, then knocked. “Baby, are you in here? I’m home.”

I smiled. “In the bedroom.”

He opened the door and
stopped on the threshold, taking the right amount of time this go around to notice what I’d done to the room. White lights hung from the ceiling, draped and cloaked inside frothy white fabric that I’d hung from the center ceiling fan and attached to the far corners of the room. Candles—the ones that were still lit anyway—flickered in each corner of the room, casting a golden glow over everything, including his outstretched arm where it rested on the door knob. I sat cross-legged in the middle of the floor, where our first piece of furniture—the air mattress—had been.

“Hey baby.”

“Hi.” I smiled and sat up a little straighter, pushing my boobs higher.

Like
a good boy, he noticed and his grin spread a bit, along with the crease in his pants.

“This looks amazing.”

“Welcome home.”

He paused at a
small table I’d set by the door and picked up two plastic wine glasses, filling the spot with his cell phone, keys, and belt. “It’s really fucking nice to be home. I’ve missed you.”

I set the wine bottle down and settled back on our imaginary bed, hands behind me.

“I like that you made yourself at home.”

Oh god, I’d totally done just that. What if he hadn’t wanted me to? Crap. I’d only wanted to do something super fun for h
im, and now we’d had the whole breaking and entering scenario. I had totally overstepped and now I felt foolish. Worry flooded me and every bit of confidence I’d had fled. “Um. Not permanently. I mean, I’d like to stay while the work is getting finished. But I don’t have to. I mean, I can do it while I stay at Kerri’s. I did tell you that was where I was, but I haven’t talked to her yet. But I can. God, Jesse. I didn’t mean to make this look like I was moving in without talking to you first. I was just thinking about it so I could be here to work on the yard. I don’t need to stay. I’ll get my own place. It just makes sense if—”

He strolled over to our imaginary b
ed and knelt down beside me, pressing his index finger against my lips. “Shh. It’s fine. I’m glad you’re here. Really. I would hope that you’d be comfortable enough to move in.” He paused and took another look around the room, then turned his hungry gaze on me. “In fact,” he held up his finger again, putting me on pause. He dug around in his front pocket and clamped his fingers around something, then withdrew a velvet black box. “I was kind of hoping to ask you something this weekend.”
