"Of course. I'll have one of the officers drive you." H
e smiled at the man. "Just wait here."

"Okay." Don sat quietly while Ethan flagged down a passing detective. Once the situation was resolved Ethan continued on with his previous goal of catching up with first shifts report. The folder on his desk was l
acking in substantial paperwork. The only findings were some camera footage of the Were entering the building with Tony Barns the day of the incident. There was no footage of the wolf leaving. Ethan assumed Adam had seen to that. He would get with him lat
e
r to confirm. With the exception of Alex and Dom, the rest of the day was easy going compared to the previous days activities. No flying office appliances, no threats of violence of any kind. Besides a few questioning stares from Alex he barely made conta
c
t with the object of his affection all day. He told himself he would wait until after work to confront her about the incident with Don.

Ethan was on his best behavior today Alex realized. After the embarrassing scene in the cafeteria with Don she exp
ected a harsh reprimand. What she didn't expect was his compassion and his taking control of the situation. She had watched as Don walked quietly with Detective Peterson out of the building. Chris heard about Don passing out in the cafeteria and apparentl
y
he went to the hospital willingly. Her instincts told her that Ethan had done something to Don, something that had went against Don's whole personality, whether it was a threat or he tampered with his mind was up for debate. She hoped beyond hope that it
was the former but logic dictated the latter. She watched him like a hawk for the rest of her shift. At one point she decided that her anger towards Bren was gone and she tried her cell. Not only did she want an answer to her questions about Ethan, she ow
e
d her friend an apology. She also hadn't got around to asking Brena the questions about the Were community that she had meant to ask last night before she had taken off. She tried Bren's phone three different times throughout her shift but she never answe
r
ed. Realizing that she hadn't heard from Ken either she tried his cell. No answer. By the end of the night she was pissed off again. No breaks in the case, no word from either of her friends and no clue how to deal with her new boss, she stormed out of th
e
building at a quarter till eleven. It made no difference to her, she was paid by commission. Nobody was in the main lobby as she left. She walked out to her car, taking in the night air she calmed her racing thoughts, smiling at the cool breeze caressing
her face. It wouldn't help to panic. As she pulled her car keys from her jacket, her phone rang. It took a minute to juggle her things around, but she fished it out of her purse. Finally, Brena's number lit up the caller ID.

    "Thank god girl. I've been
trying to call you all day. Where the hell have you been?"

"Hello Alexandria. A pleasure as always to speak to you." That wasn

t Brena. It was a man

s voice. Familiar.

"Who is this? Joseph?" She asked, placing the voice. "I thought you broke up wi
th Brena?"

"Actually, Alex, she broke up with me. It was devastating," he explained, but there was a defiant sarcastic tone that grated on her nerves. There was also a faint muffled sound in the background.

"So, what do you need? And why do you ha
ve Brena's phone?" She was starting to get worried. He didn't ever call her and he didn't sound like himself. "Is everything okay? Is Brena alright?"

"No, Alex. Everything is not alright. I had a good long talk with Bren today. I was tolerant of her wi
ll to fight me for long enough, now she's forced me into action." Another muffled cry. That's what the sound was. Muffled screaming. Alex panicked.

"Who the hell do you think your messing with asshole?! What have you done to her?" She screamed into the
phone.

"Calm down Alex. Panicking won't save your friend. I have her safe and sound. A little bruised but otherwise unharmed. She fights like a cat, you know? Not my fault. Now, this is what I need you to do. You

re going to come to the building on St
ate Street where our meetings are held. I will meet you there. Do you understand?"

"Fuck you, you insignificant pig. I'm going to cut your heart from your chest and feed it to a real Were, you prissy piece of dog shit!" She was jumping into her car jus
t as Ethan appeared beside her. She leapt, her heart in her throat. He gave her a questioning glance. She tried to wave him away but Joseph was cursing back at her and she knew Ethan could hear it. He raced around to the passenger side and jumped into her
car after she tried pushing him away.

"You listen to me you snot nosed little cunt, you

re going to come to the meeting house, or I'm going to start cutting parts off of your friend and then show them to you. I hope you get free picture messages, bitc
h. You have one hour." He hung up.

"Bastard! Son of a bitch!" She punched the steering wheel. She couldn

t handle this. If Ethan hadn

t been sitting next to her, she would have burst into tears. But she wouldn

t do that in front of him.

    "What happ
ened? Who was that on the phone?" He asked. His British accent was back.

"None of your damn business. Get out of the car so I can fix this." She started pushing at him again. For all the good it did. The man was a brick shit house. He grabbed her hands
and held them.

"Tell me what happened, Alex. I can help." He was looking sweet again. Maybe he did still like her. She really needed an ally, but he wasn

t it. He was most likely the enemy. She knew that. Why would the enemy try so hard to help though
? Her skull felt ready to crack.

"I can't bring you into this. You don't understand. Or maybe you do, but I still can't trust you. Please, just get out so I can go."

    "No. You

re in trouble. I'm here to help you. You

re not getting rid of me. Now d
rive. That

s an order. You can explain things on the way." He pulled his safety belt on.

"Damn you. Fucking Superman." She started the car. This was idiotic. He was probably in league with whoever had Brena. It took her twenty minutes to get to the bui
lding on State Street. She explained all the information she had to Ethan, what little of it she had, except the part about them being a group of Weres and Vampires. That might have been the most important part but it would serve him right if he were just
a human and he got eaten. He told her to pull back three blocks before the building so they could stake it out. It seemed pointless. She knew Brena was inside.

"Why can't we just storm the place?" She shifted nervously.

    "Because that

s a ridiculou
sly bad idea. We don't know who's there, how many of them there are. It would be suicide. Just be patient a little while longer. He gave you until midnight, didn

t he?"

"Yes. But what if he gets impatient? What if he enjoys cutting things off? Oh God." She was going to be sick.  He reached out and started rubbing the back of her neck. She couldn't find enough anger to push him away.

    "It

s going to be alright, I
promise. I have friends on their way as we speak."

"How the hell did you manage that? I've been in the car with you the whole time, you didn't call anybody." She couldn't believe he would say something like that just to try and calm her down.

He stared
at her.

"You can't tell me right?" She guessed. He kept staring. She shrugged his hand off.

    "Sorry."

"I can't believe you. This is ridiculous. How do I know you

re not a part of their group, huh? The 'Peace rallying, finger cutting off' group
. You could be getting ready to slice and dice me right now for all I know." She was getting hysterical. He reached over, like he did last night, and pulled her lips down on his. She couldn

t pull away. She wasn

t sure she wanted to. He kissed her with de
s
peration and hunger, mixing her already tumultuous feeling upside down in her head.

"Does that feel like the kiss of a man who wants to kill you?" He whispered across her lips, looking directly into her eyes.

    "No," she squeaked.

    "Okay, so we'r
e in agreement. We don't want to kill each other."

    "I didn

t agree to that," she said, and pulled away.

"Fine," he snapped. "After I save your friend, and solve the Wolf Killer case, you can plunge a dagger right into my fucking heart because I pr
obably won't give a shit after that anyway," he said petulantly. She stared, shocked at his outburst. He threw open the car door and shot out into the night. She felt like she had just gotten into a fight with her high school sweetheart. Even though she h
a
d never gone to high school. She turned the car off and ran out after him.

"What is your deal? I don't know what to think about you. Do you want me, or do you just love fucking with people? Head games get you all hot? Because I've only ever felt two wa
ys about you and they were pretty clear from the start." She ticked them off her fingers. "Horny and angry. That

s it." Scared, hurt, longing, and joyous were not counted out loud on her list. “
And I never claimed to be somebody I wasn't.”

    "I am sorry
Alexandria," he whispered after a moment. He looked up at her and she almost literally felt a connection snap. "I will help you get your friend back, and I will finish what I came to do here, but then I will leave you alone. I swear." He started walking t
o
wards the big house that had been converted into a meeting place for activist groups. It was then that she saw five or six men walk out of the shadows and meet Ethan on the sidewalk. He wasn

t lying about backup. She just hoped they were on her side as we
l
l.

Chapter Ten

Alex could have picked a better time to tell him he didn't mean anything to her. It was hard to go into a battle with a broken heart. He had to get it together though. There were at least thirteen   Weres in the house according to Adam
. It had been sheer luck that the detail that Ethan had put on Brena to help him avoid her had seen her get picked up. Dom was able to follow them back to this house where he heard the sounds of her fighting and the male Weres inside. He called Adam who c
a
lled Ethan while he was outside the building waiting for Alex. Adam told him everything he knew, while Alex was getting a phone call of her own. He had Adam pick men he could trust for back up and meet him here. He couldn

t tell Alex any of that though or
he would have to admit to having Brena followed. Now how was he going to get Brena out without being seen?

"Ethan," Adam called when he approached.

"Have they sensed you?" Ethan asked.

"No, they're all cozy in the living room watching televisi
on, if you can believe that. The prisoner is conscience. Very much so. She's been screaming obscenities for the past hour, with or without the gag in. How do you want to approach?"

Ethan glanced at Alex. She hadn

t taken a step since Adam and his men h
ad shown themselves. She must be frightened. He called out to her. She just shook her head petulently. It was almost cute, but he repressed the urge to smile.

"Come here, Alex. It's okay, I promise." She took a few hesitant steps his way. "Alex, if I w
anted you dead, you'd be dead by now." That she took seriously. Logic must have a stronger effect on her than trust. Go figure. She stopped just short of the group.

"Alex, this is my good friend Adam Hevenside. He came down with me from New York to wor
k with Homicide. And this is Steven Borden, Joshua Larrelly, Dominic Harcourt, and...," he paused. He didn't know the other two.

"Odin Skarsgard," the tall blond introduced himself.

"Edward Lowery," said the brunette with a scar across his left che
ek.

Alex stared at the two new vampires. Ethan could hear her heartbeat kick up. "They're...um..." She didn

t quite know how to finish. She must be sensing what they were. They were young and not shielding properly. But she didn't know if everyone kne
w or not so she kept her mouth shut.
