Something is definitely wrong with him, if it even
is
a him. His gaze appears blank and maniacal at the same time. I can’t tell if he sneers at me or is trying to look right through me. Either way, it’s the positioning of his eye socket that’s more disturbing. Instead of them being next to each other, his left eye socket is several inches higher on his face than it should be. His nose and mouth are also crooked, as if someone tried putting two halves of a face together but didn’t quite line them up properly. I’ve never seen – nor could I have imagined – this sort of disfigurement.

The human opens his mouth and moans louder than the others. He steps toward my cell and grabs hold of the bars, shaking them in his grasp. But just when I think the deformed human might alert someone to what Mom and I are doing, he’s shoved roughly from behind by the robots trailing the herd. The metallic monsters keep moving forward and are soon gone.

“Where are they being taken?” I ask.

But Mom pays no attention, instead getting back to the final wire connection. When the humans begin to get loud again, I’m not nearly as concerned. Then a voice echoes through the dungeon.

“Silence, all of you!”

If I still had a spine, chills would certainly rush down it when I hear the sound of Black-Dome’s voice. I’m certain he’s not in the dungeon merely to corral some deformed humans.

“I hope you two are awake and ready to answer questions,” he calls out.

Black-Dome’s footsteps get louder and louder. Despite her insistence upon taking this task slow and steady, Mom hurries to finish connecting the orange wire. I begin to turn my head to look for Black-Dome but Mom snaps at me.

“Don’t move!”

The clicking of Black-Dome’s feet on the concrete floor suddenly stops. My back is turned to him, but I still feel his shadow looming behind me outside the cell.

“Hey, what’s going on in there?”

A smile forms on Mom’s face as she finally clicks in the wire.

“Done,” she says.

For a split second, my mind registers the sound of Black-Dome banging against the bars of my cell. But the sound goes away –
everything
around me goes away – when I close my eyes.

In an instant, every memory I’ve ever had from my past life comes rushing back in my mind.
