Epilogue

Aaron nodded in acknowledgement of his mother’s wave before getting into his seldom-used car. It had been the first time since the events four months earlier that he’d agreed to meet Rebecca Baker.

He dug his phone out of his pocket, set it to speaker and dialled Gray, needing that deep familiar voice to ground him.

“Hey, honey,” Gray answered. “How’d the lunch go?”

“As expected, I guess. She was full of apologies and tears about what she’d done.”

“And?” Gray prompted.

Aaron tapped his fingers on the steering wheel. “I don’t know. Maybe in time I’ll be able to forgive her, but for now, we’ve settled on cool but friendly.”

“I should’ve gone with you.”

“Bullshit. You’ve got company to entertain. I’m sorry I had to take time out of our weekend to get this over with.”

“Don’t worry about it. We’ve just been hanging out. Too damn cold outside to do much of anything anyway.”

Aaron smiled. It was the second time Gray’s friend Bobby Marks and his partner, Nikolay Radin had come down to DC to visit. Aaron and Gray had managed to get up to New York for New Year’s Eve, as well. It was nice having friends.

“You there?” Gray asked.

“Yep. I’m only about eight minutes away. If you and Bobby don’t have anything special planned for the next few hours, why don’t you tell Nik I’ll agree to see that Lattimer guy if he still wants me to.”

“Hang on.”

Aaron heard Gray talking to Bobby and Nik in the background. Since first meeting Nik, the professor had been anxious to introduce him to an old teacher of his. George Lattimer was an authority on the Dracul family, as well as the Knights of Paiderastia.

Professor Lattimer had surprised everyone when he’d reappeared after having been in hiding. According to Gray, Lattimer was heavily involved with the Congressional hearings ANARCHY IN BLOOD

taking place. Evidently Lattimer had been compiling evidence against the Knights for years under the guise of being the society’s archivist. He disappeared with all his notes, fearing the Knights would come after him to destroy the evidence of their unlawful ways.

Aaron didn’t care to know any more about the Knights than what had come out in the Senate and Congressional hearings, but he was curious about the House of Dracul, as Rick called his family. He was also curious why he hadn’t suffered any ill-effects because of the holy wine he’d consumed. The doctors believed the procedure they performed to pump his stomach as well as the many times Aaron had thrown up had actually saved him from whatever longterm bloodlust Rick seemed to have experienced.

“Nik suggested we call Doctor Lattimer and invite him to dinner downtown,” Gray finally said.

Aaron hated to throw a bucket of cold water on their evening, but he had no desire to go out in public. Since the story broke, Aaron felt like he was always on display. There had been several unflattering articles in the paper questioning whether or not the son of the ex-President had anything to do with the murders.

Aaron’s background had been gone over with a fine-toothed comb by the FBI, Secret Service and every media outlet known to man.

Gray must’ve picked up on Aaron’s anxiety. “You can’t stay hidden forever, honey.”

“I know, but I was hoping to lay low until we can get your new office set up in New York.” Gray had been the first to suggest they move out of the DC area. It was obvious neither of them would be able to separate themselves from what had happened inside the White House four months earlier.

It had been Bobby’s idea to make the move to New York. As he explained it, New Yorkers have enough on their plates without worrying about who’s living next door.

“We can talk about it when you get home. You should be concentrating on the nasty streets.”

Aaron chuckled. A late season round of snow and ice had begun to fall, but it wasn’t anything like the December and January the city had survived. “You’re on speaker, but I’m close enough to you now. I guess I can wait another minute or two to hear your voice.”

“Good. I’ll light one up,” Gray teased.

The two of them had gotten used to spending the majority of their time together. Aaron knew it probably wasn’t healthy, but he’d come to rely on Gray always being there when he needed him.

Aaron knew finding a job wouldn’t be easy, no matter what city they lived in. His degree was in political science, but politics no longer held any appeal. The hearings had soured Aaron on the entire government. He still couldn’t believe how many Senators and Congressmen would need to be replaced if the hearings decided to oust an elected official because he belonged to the Knights of Paiderastia.

Washington was quickly turning into another Salem. Although the FBI had the official list of members, taken from Rick’s safe, they didn’t have any real proof other than a name on a piece of parchment.

The Knights weren’t limited to politics. There were some real heavy-hitters on that list.

Some of the world’s wealthiest men had been accused of being a member of the despicable organisation. Aaron had a strong feeling the fallout from Rick’s murderous binge would go on for years and years.

Although Broomfield had been given the title of President, everyone knew he wouldn’t be re-elected. Broomfield’s part in the photo scandal had been swept under the proverbial rug, at least for the time being. His new appointment had simply been a way to try and hold the nation together until things could be sorted out.

Aaron was more than pleased when his usual parking spot, in front of the home he now shared with Gray, was open. He pulled in and shut off the engine.

As soon as he got out of the car, he spotted Gray standing on the covered front porch, cigarette in hand. Damn, the man was sexy. Aaron stuck his phone in his pocket and carefully picked his way up the icy sidewalk. “Why’re you out here?”

After Aaron took the four steps up to the porch, Gray pulled him into his arms, and kissed him, the strong taste of nicotine right there for Aaron to sample as much as he wanted.

Gray pulled back and took another drag. “Bobby was bitching about me smoking in the house. Pussy.”

Aaron inhaled the second-hand smoke with gusto, feeling his cock harden. He rubbed against Gray’s muscled thigh and moaned. “Well, you’re either going to have to put that out and take me inside, or continue to smoke it and risk public indecency charges.”

Gray reached his free hand between them and ran it over the hardening length behind Aaron’s fly. “Don’t tempt me.”

The front door opened, surprising them both. Aaron glanced around Gray’s shoulder to see Bobby standing in the doorway with his arms crossed over his chest. “You two are nuts.

Get your asses in out of the cold.”

Gray took one last drag and tossed the cigarette into the small planter at the corner of the porch. “Tell Nik to call George and ask him about coming over here for dinner. I’m sure we can find something to throw together.”

“Will do.” Bobby shuffled his feet, but didn’t immediately go into the house.

“What?” Gray prompted.

“Nik thinks George is going to try and convince Aaron to give up some of his sperm.”

Aaron choked, requiring several strong-handed slaps to his back. “You’ve got to be kidding me!”

Bobby shrugged. “Historians are a strange lot. They can’t stand the thought of the Dracul bloodline dying out without trying to save it.”

“Well, too bad,” Aaron said. “The only person with access to my cum is Gray.”

“Damn right,” Gray agreed.

Bobby held up his hands. “According to Nik, you could make a fortune if you played your cards right.”

“If I wanted to make money off the Dracul family name, there’s a huge-ass trust fund set up by them with my name on it. For now, I just want to be Aaron Baker, kinky partner of Grayson Mills.”

Bobby smirked and glanced down at Gray and Aaron’s matching erections. “Well, I think you’ve accomplished that much.”

Gray rolled his eyes and pushed Bobby into the house. He turned to Aaron and held out his hand. “Come in out of the cold.”

Aaron smiled. With Gray by his side to heat up the moments they were together, Aaron doubted he’d ever feel cold again.
