“What do I look for? How do I know that the guy is the right one?”

“What we discovered was there were three casks of wine sold earlier in the year at a private auction. All the people invited to the sale were members of the Knights. We found two casks. There’s a third one out there somewhere. There’s something about the wine that turns the person who drinks it blood-thirsty in a way that’s insane. My two killers tore out ANARCHY IN BLOOD

the throats of their victims and drank their blood.” Bobby sighed. “Your killer will more than likely have the other cask of wine somewhere.”

“Shit. This isn’t good, Bobby. I don’t have access to all the information on this case.”

“But you must know people who do, and you’ll need to let them know what to look for while they investigate this. Plus if you find a suspect, he’ll have a cigar box with the seal of the Knights on it. It’s their membership badge or something like it.”

Gray rested his forehead against the cool glass and closed his eyes. He was going to have to sit down and discuss this whole thing with Kaplan, Tina, and Aaron. They needed to organise their searches, and find out who might fit the profile Bobby gave him.

“I’ll send you all the files Nik and I have on the Knights, plus what we know about the wine. Nik’s willing to talk to you any time you want him.” Bobby’s voice held worry and determination. “We’ll help you stop this murderer and the entire society. I’m getting fed up with men who believe they’re above the law and who don’t treat others with common decency.”

“It happens all the time. The weak get preyed on and the strong take advantage of them. I’m not saying it’s right, just that it happens.” Gray rubbed the back of his neck.

“Thanks for telling me all of this, Bobby. I’ll let Ruth know to look for the files you’re sending me. I’ll make sure they get passed on to the right people.”

“Great. I’ll get in touch with you later. Hopefully, by the time Nik and I get down there, you’ll have caught this bastard.”

“I hope so too.” Gray hung up and straightened his shoulders.

After tossing his phone on the desk, he grabbed his coffee and went looking for Kaplan and Tina. He found them in the conference room, standing next to each other and staring down at some pictures.

“What have you got for me?”

They looked up and Kaplan gestured for Tina to take the lead.

“Well, we’ve discovered the names of the first two victims and where those pictures were taken. The intern’s name was Simon Wolfe. He interned for Vice President Broomfield the first year the man was in office. We know that the President told him to shut up about Broomfield and you. He was twenty-four, gay, and the last time anyone saw him was the night before his body was found. Simon liked to hit the clubs and one of his friends said he got a phone call while at one.”

Kaplan took over. “Simon commented that he was going to get lucky later on and left.

No one saw or heard from him until his body turned up drained of blood two nights later.

Bert has a request in to check Simon’s phone records, but that may take a day or two.”

“Okay. Simon was the first.”

Gray sat down, pulled out his pen, and opened the folder. He jotted down a few notes next to Simon’s picture.

“What about the second victim?”

Shifting some papers around, Kaplan held up a picture of a young blond man. Gray drew a deep breath, thinking how close the man looked to Aaron. He was going to have to keep a close watch on his new lover.

“William Caster, twenty-two, works as a lobbyist for the gun control guys. The picture with the President was taken when Douglas announced Broomfield as his running mate. Not sure why a gun control lobbyist would be at a rally for these two, but I guess I’ve seen stranger things.” Kaplan shrugged.

“William was gay and also last seen leaving a D.C. club after getting a phone call. Again no contact until his body was discovered two days ago.”

“So our perp is killing young gay blond males. Definitely serial killer material and we’re guaranteed more dead bodies than these three. Okay. All three bodies were drained of blood by a slit made to the jugular. We know the bodies were dumped and weren’t killed where they were found.”

He shook his head and frowned. “I forgot to ask Aaron if they figured out the name of the third victim yet.”

“Bert didn’t have anything new for me last night, but he said he’d get back to me once the evidence from the scenes is processed.”

Tina paced at the front of the room. “Shit. What else do we know?”

Their discussion was interrupted by Gray’s ringing cell phone. A quick glance at the display and he held up his finger. “Hang on. I’ve got to take this.”

Gray walked a couple of steps away. “Hey, Bobby.”

“Hey, listen, I was just talking to my partner, Jablonsky. He reminded me that although the files I have are my own, they pertain to an actual case we worked.”

Gray silently cursed himself. He should’ve seen this coming. “So you’re not sending them?”

“No, I am, but I’m also gonna place a call to the DC Police and give them a heads-up about what they may be dealing with.”

“Call Bert Paloma. He’s the detective we’ve been working with.” Gray rattled off Bert’s number. “Feds are working it too, but the cops are still in the loop.”

“Will do. I’ll stick a copy of everything in an envelope and overnight it to you,” Bobby explained.

“Thanks.” Gray hung up the phone and walked back to his colleagues.

“That was a NYPD detective friend of mine, Bobby Marks. He dealt with a case much like ours a few months ago.”

Gray went on to fill his team in on what Bobby had told him. They sat silently for a few minutes once he finished talking. Kaplan stared out the window while Tina slumped in a chair, her face in her hands.

“Holy fuck. I remember that case, but I never heard anything about these Knights. And there’s a whole society of these sickos?” Tina asked.

“It would seem so, though I’m guessing there might be at least one here in the city.”

Gray hated to think there was actually a serial killer in DC with a taste for blood.

“You go talk to Bert. Let him know what’s going on. Tina, I want you to call Gus at the Bureau and fill him in as well.” Gray stood and shut his folder. “I’ll update Aaron about what we’ve found out.”

“Fine, Boss. We’ll meet up later.” Tina waved as Gray walked out of the room.

Gray snatched up his phone as he wandered into his office. Sitting on the couch, he speed-dialled Aaron.

“Hey, Gray.”

“Good morning, honey. How’s our favourite president doing today?”

“A little better than he was last night, but still not good. Tell me you have something.”

“I’ll tell you when we meet for lunch at one. Sid’s again?”

Aaron’s laugh waved over Gray’s ear and his cock twitched at the sound.

“Sure. I’ll meet you there at one. What are you going to do until then?”

Gray shifted on the couch. “Unfortunately, I have two client meetings to attend before I can see you. If I didn’t have those, I’d try to convince you to take the rest of the day off and meet me at my house.”

“Oh, I should just abandon Rick during such a difficult time,” Aaron teased.

“If you knew what I want to do to you, you’d be running out of the White House, screaming for a cab.”

“So sure you know what I want, huh?” Aaron’s husky voice caused Gray to shiver.

“Trust me, baby, I know exactly what you want.”

His office phone rang and a voice spoke in the background on Aaron’s end.

“Shit. Seems like work is calling us both.” He pressed the heel of his hand against his erection. “I’ll see you at Sid’s at one.”

“Gray?”

“Yeah?”

“I think I need to tell Rick about hiring you. I feel bad keeping it from him.”

“Do what you feel is best, but I’m not so sure giving him one more thing to worry about is in his best interest.”

“Yeah. Maybe you’re right.”

“I’ll stand by whatever you decide.”

“Thanks. Bye, Gray.”

“See you later, honey.”

Gray grabbed the other receiver as he hung up from Aaron.

“Mr. Mills, your ten-thirty is here.”

“Thanks, Ruth. Take them to the conference room and, please, make sure there’s some coffee for us.”

“Yes, sir.”

After he hung up, he stared down at Aaron’s client folder. Something told him there were going to be more bodies before they even got the slightest break in the case.

“Shut the door,” Rick said as Aaron entered the Oval Office.

Aaron did as instructed before approaching the President. “News?”

“I got a call from Wetherby this morning. The third victim, Jeremy Lovell, applied for an internship with the Office of the Chief of Staff.”

“Cameron? But I thought he said he didn’t know Jeremy.”

“He did. He doesn’t. According to Wetherby, Paul Franks from the Vice-President’s office recommended Lovell on his application.” Rick’s face looked grim. “I have a gut feeling that self-righteous bigot Broomfield is behind this.”

Aaron knew how much Rick hated his Vice-President. If it weren’t for needing the Bible vote, Rick wouldn’t have even considered picking Broomfield as his running mate. “You think he’s setting you up?”

Rick rubbed the back of his neck. “Or someone from his office.” Rick sighed. “I just wish I knew what the hell was going on.”

Aaron stuck his hands in his pockets, wishing like hell for a cigarette. He decided to confess his theory to Rick, but not about hiring Gray to help. “I think you might be right about Broomfield. I heard him laughing about those pictures the morning they were splashed all over the news. I think he knows about you and Cameron.”

Rick’s eyes rounded. “Did he say that?”

Aaron shook his head. “He just said he wished he could’ve seen your face the first time you turned on the TV, and then he said something about wondering if Cameron was jealous.”

“Shit!” Rick stood and began pacing around the room. “Do you think Gray or someone from his office has been talking?”

“No!” Aaron said vehemently. “Gray’s a professional. He would never divulge that kind of information.”

“Then how did Broomfield find out?”

Aaron shrugged, not sure what to say.

“Why doesn’t he just come out and ask me about it? Do you think his game is to drag me through the media mud?”

“I think maybe he wants your job, sir,” Aaron replied, revealing his greatest worry.

“How could he possibly…” Rick stopped in mid-sentence. “Oh, fuck. You don’t think he’s setting me up for impeachment, do you?”

Aaron took a deep breath. He’d already come this far, he might as go all the way. “I think Broomfield knows it would take a hell of a lot to get you impeached. I can’t really believe he’s behind these murders, but I think he’s using them to shine even more negative light on you. I’m sure he knows the victims all had sex before they died. the aftermath. If the American public get worked up enough to even think you had a part in the murders and then he drops the gay bombshell…”

“Will you do me a favour?” Rick asked, his face incredibly pale.

“Anything,” Aaron answered immediately.

“Ask Gray to dig up some dirt on Broomfield. No one’s as clean as he claims to be. I might need my own stash of ammunition before this thing is through.”

“I can do that.” Aaron knew he should confess that Gray was already working a case on Broomfield, but the last thing he wanted was Rick to feel like Aaron had gone behind his back. He had to think of something else he could do from the inside to get dirt on the Vice President.

“I don’t suppose you have anything that needs to go over to Broomfield’s office, do you?” Aaron asked. “I could do a bit of poking around while I’m there.”

Rick grinned. “Actually, I’m thinking of having a small dinner party Saturday night.

You could always issue a personal invitation.”

Aaron was shocked. “You want to have dinner with Broomfield?”

“It’s not that I want to, but maybe if we can get him flustered, he’ll screw up and tell us something about what he’s been up to.”

It made sense to Aaron. “While I’m there, I’ll see if I can get anything on Paul Franks and just how well he knew Jeremy Lovell.”

“Good thinking.”

“I’m meeting Gray for lunch at one.”

“Good. Maybe I should invite the two of you Saturday. If we want to shake Broomfield up, having Gray in the room should do it.”

“I don’t know that he has White House security clearance anymore.”

“It’s not a formal dinner. I thought we’d eat in the private dining room. There won’t be more than eight of us if you bring Gray. I’ll make sure Gray is allowed in.”

Aaron was uneasy about having Gray and Broomfield in the same room. Broomfield’s opinion of Gray was a matter of public record, one that threatened to destroy Gray’s entire world at one time. “I’ll ask him. What time should I tell the Vice President?”

“Dinner will be at eight, cocktails at seven,” Rick informed him.

“Anyone else you need me to invite?” Aaron asked.

“Cameron will be there, along with Senator Nathan Griggs and his wife.”

“You’ve already invited them?”

“No, but I was planning to see Cameron anyway, and you know Nathan can never say no to me. If Daniel Broomfield goes off the deep end, there isn’t a better person to have in the room than the senate majority leader.” Rick winked at Aaron. “At least I don’t have to worry about my wife. Things will be much easier for the next week or so with Larissa out of the house.”

“You’ll need to be careful, sir. I’m sure all eyes will be on you until this situation is cleared up.”
