Kurt

A
loud smack
pierced the silence in Kurt’s room.
Fuck, not again
, Kurt thought. He squeezed his eyes shut, knowing that his clan mate Frank was getting it on again with his flavor of the night.

The woman let out an audible moan of pleasure.
God, that noise sounded good,
Kurt thought. His boxers started to tighten. Man, how he wished he could be the one with her, instead of Frank.

“You like that?” Frank asked.

There was a shuffle of movement and then the bed started to slowly creak back and forth, lightly hitting the wall behind the headboard. Kurt closed his brown eyes as he imagined taking the woman from behind. As much as he hated how he could always hear Frank, the girls he was with always sounded so hot that he couldn’t help but close his eyes and pretend he was taking them himself.

Kurt pictured his hands holding her thick hips tightly as he pushed deep inside her. The woman moaned louder, and Kurt ran his hand down to his boxers. The creaking intensified and the headboard hit the wall with a loud bang.

“Oh God, fuck me harder!” the woman screamed, but her yell was slightly muffled in the sheets. Kurt stroked himself in time with each pound of the headboard, imagining how tight and slick she felt around him. Frank growled in the other room, and an audible smack rang out again. The headboard of the bed pounded harder into the wall, and Kurt imagined pumping into her from behind as her ass jiggled with each thrust. Her moans became louder with every squeak of the bedframe.

“Oh yes! Don’t stop,” she yelled. Her moans turned to wails as she teetered over the edge, and Kurt could tell that she was almost ready to release, and he was just about there with her.

“Yes!” she screamed as the banging against the wall shook the whole room. Kurt moved his hand faster, longing for release.

“Oh God, I’m coming!” The bedframe pounded into the wall as she moaned, falling into her orgasm. Kurt’s body shook with her moans as he reached his climax.

Kurt pushed his head back in the pillow.
This is just fucking pathetic
, he thought. Kurt hated himself for what his sex life had become, getting off with the girl next door. But he couldn’t bring himself to actually take the plunge with another girl. He wasn’t ready to open his heart like that again.

Kurt got up and cleaned himself off. The room next door was eerily quiet, and he hoped that they were done for the night.
Take a bow, dude
, Kurt thought.
She will be there in the morning.

As much as Kurt loved and hated hearing Frank give it to some girl, Kurt couldn’t blame him for getting with this one. She was a fine piece of ass. She had curves in all the right places and perfect pouty lips. If it were six years ago, Kurt would have loved to throw her around in his sheets. But now, despite how he liked to imagine it was himself making her moan like that, he couldn’t bring himself to be with someone else. He was just too broken to let another woman into his heart.

Kurt squeezed his eyes shut, hoping to stop the memories of
her
from invading his thoughts again. But it was no use. His thoughts always returned to her. He let out a low growl as he remembered her long, wavy blonde hair cascading over him, and how much he loved to tangle his hands in it. Her bright blue eyes had captivated him the moment he met her. He would give anything to get lost in her eyes once again.

Callie Jordan had been his everything. They had met the first night of their freshman year of college and had been inseparable. He had been instantly attracted to her, and once he got to know her adorable personality he was completely hooked. He could not get enough of Callie Jordan. Kurt’s buddies always joked with him that he was completely whipped, but he didn’t care. He was happy to be whipped by Callie. Callie had made him feel whole.

Now, the wholeness that he once felt was gone, ripped from him by a drunk driver. Callie had been on her way to see him. Kurt had told her it was late and that she could come over the next day, but she insisted that she wanted to spend the night in his arms before they left for summer break. She lived only ten minutes away from him, so she was adamant that she would be fine, and Kurt had stupidly believed her. Callie was almost at his place when an idiot in a pickup truck took a turn around a corner too fast. The driver had lost control and slammed Callie’s car into a tree.

The night that Callie had died changed everything. It was as if part of his soul was gone, and he feared that there was no way to get that piece back. Without her light, he was only left with the darkest parts of himself. His sorrow over her death overtook his mind, and what was left was hatred and anger. Kurt blamed not only the drunk driver for her death but himself as well, and he started to become self-destructive.

After Callie’s death, Kurt’s personality completely changed. Instead of the fun-loving guy he once was, he was now just a hard shell with a very short fuse. His temper caused him to piss off a lot of people, getting him into several fistfights. After getting a high off the fighting, Kurt was quick to pick fights just to take out his anger. One fight in particular got him sent to the emergency room with a black eye and broken ribs. His parents met him there and were worried sick about him. Kurt’s mom had begged for him to get some help and talk to someone, but it fell on deaf ears. Kurt didn’t want help; he wanted to wallow in his anger. The night after Kurt left the hospital, Kurt’s fighting record caught up to him. Charges were pressed against him, and while his lawyer father was able to get him off without a dent on his record, it did come at a price. His father had given him an ultimatum. Either Kurt got his act together, or his father would do it for him. Kurt hated ultimatums. However, he knew his father was serious. When he ran into one of his friends who had joined the army, he figured that would be the easiest way to fix things, a place to take out his anger somewhere far away from the constant soul-crushing reminder of Callie.

The higher ranks in the army quickly saw his inner demons and decided to use his rage for their benefit. Within a year he was transferred to a special unit where he willingly underwent genetic testing. He knew it was a stupid decision that could possibly kill him, but his rage had consumed so much of his soul that he no longer cared about what happened to him or his body. The genetic testing was a covert operation that the army was a part of to create what they thought would be a super soldier. Kurt let out a laugh.
Super soldier my ass.
Instead of the indestructible human they were going for, the mutated genes turned the participants into shifters. His genes now were spliced into two halves, one of a man and one of a bear. The whole operation backfired, and the army was left with a group of men who shifted into six hundred pounds of muscle and fur.

As much as Kurt hated the tests, he was now oddly thankful for what they turned him into. The testing had been a blessing in disguise, as the bear helped him calm his mind. It unexplainably healed him of his rage. He was now able to control it and focus it into his grizzly form.

With the army unprepared to deal with shifters, the group was honorably discharged, with hefty severance packages, and it was now what his clan had become. Kurt’s dominance had landed him as leader of the clan, and they had been able to stick to themselves without any issues.

A year after the clan left the army, the testing became public knowledge, and shifting into a bear was no longer something Kurt and the rest of his clan needed to hide. Apparently, Kurt’s clan wasn’t the only one. Of course, there was public outrage about genetic testing on humans and there were those that hated them for it, but by now most of society accepted them. Other clans from around the world from other genetic tests had outed themselves, and shifting seemed to become the new fad. Businesses had popped up everywhere claiming to make their patients into shifters, but Kurt always thought that they were bullshit.

As evidenced by Frank’s nightly theatrics, being a bear was a turn-on for a lot of different women. Kurt even saw in the paper the other day advertisements for a luxury matching service for humans and shifters, like it was some new dating site. Kurt never understood why women were so attracted to shifters, or why they had become this hot new thing. He guessed that they found the danger of their rage something that was sexy, maybe something that they could try and tame. Kurt laughed to himself.
Taming one of us? Yeah right.
Kurt, however, still could not use the shifter dating fad to his advantage, nor was he sure if he even really wanted to. Sure, he was still turned on by the thought of a woman’s legs wrapped around his waist, but his heart would never let him get to that point. He had built up walls so thick that he doubted they could ever come down. He longed for only one woman’s body, but being with her was impossible.

Scarlett

S
carlett twirled
the stem of her wine glass and shook her leg in anticipation.
Adam has to be here soon
, she thought to herself. She pushed her long auburn hair behind her shoulders and took a long sip of her Cabernet. She had worn her favorite dress tonight. It had small cap sleeves and cinched in right at her waistline, accentuating her very curvy hourglass shape. She always felt like a pinup model in this dress, and she wore it to give herself that extra confidence boost. Despite their year of dating, Adam still made her nervous and self-conscious.

Adam Halloway was the real-estate mogul who had captivated Scarlett’s heart the moment she laid eyes on him. He was tall and muscular, with a strong chin and perfectly cut and styled blond hair. He was 100 percent out of Scarlett’s league, and she knew it. Adam had been notorious for dating stick-thin models, so when he had shown the slightest interest in her, she felt like she was in a fairy tale. They had met at a cocktail party for the investment bank she worked for. She’d been standing at the bar waiting for a drink when he had come up behind her.

“Need some help?” Adam asked. Scarlett had been unsuccessfully trying to get the bartender’s attention for the last several minutes.

“Apparently,” Scarlett said. “Normally bartenders serve the ladies first, but this one, I think, prefers the gentlemen more.”

Adam smiled at her. “Well, I can easily fix that, then,” Adam said, and leaned over the bar. The bartender had taken one look at him and shot him a big smile, and they had had their drinks in an instant.

Their relationship had been easy at the beginning. Scarlett was so caught up that a guy like Adam could be with a girl like her that she ignored a lot of the red flags. Now, however, the warning signs were becoming harder to ignore.

Scarlett looked around at the restaurant and eyed the couples around her. They all seemed so happy, sharing their meals and holding hands across the table. She let out a sigh.
Why couldn’t her relationship with Adam be that simple? How did things become so complicated?

Scarlett looked down at her watch again and noticed that Adam was now an hour late. She drummed her fingers across the white tablecloth in frustration. The excuses in her head that he had hit traffic or got caught up with something at work now faded from her mind. Scarlett had started to read between the lines and realized what his excuses actually were. He wasn’t going to show up to dinner. He had forgotten about their date yet again, and was spending his evening with someone else.

Scarlett let out a huff of frustration and finished up her wine. Relationships were not supposed to be filled with disappointment. While Adam certainly was a catch, she didn’t deserve to be treated like this. She pulled out her cell phone and saw that there was a voicemail.
Great
, Scarlett thought. Leaving a voicemail so he wouldn’t have to actually talk to her. Scarlett rolled her eyes and pressed play.

“Hey Scar,” Adam said. “I know you are probably pissed at me right now, but I just wasn’t able to get away from work.” Anger bubbled in Scarlett’s chest and she quickly ended the message and slammed the phone on the table. The couple next to her shot her a glare, but she ignored it.

Of course he had to “work late” again. That was his excuse last weekend as well, and she was absolutely tired of it. Scarlett forced her eyes shut in frustration as the memory of what happened last weekend flooded her mind.

Adam had been working late and he had promised he would come by her apartment for a late dinner and a movie. Scarlett had spent hours in the kitchen cooking, making her favorite Italian dish, lasagna. She even went as far as making her own noodles. The meal was ready and remained in the oven to stay warm. An hour passed and there was still no word from Adam. She tried giving him a call, but there was no answer. Another hour passed and Scarlett was about to give up and go to bed when there was a soft knock at her door.

Scarlett walked up and looked through the peephole. “You are over two hours late, Adam,” Scarlett said.

“I know, Scar,” Adam said. “I am so sorry, but my meetings ran over again and I couldn’t find a moment to give you a call.” Scarlett sighed and opened up the door. Adam leaned down to hug her and she inhaled, hoping to smell his amazing cologne. Instead, she was surprised by a floral smell that was distinctly feminine.

Scarlett had asked him about the perfume, but he had brushed it off, saying that it must have been from his clients. Scarlett had tried to argue with Adam, but he continued to expertly deflect the situation and distracted her with his amazing lips. Scarlett hated how Adam captivated her, but this was the last straw. Scarlett would not continue to be there whenever Adam wanted.

Her job as an investment banker was just as demanding as his, and yet she was able to make the time for him.
That’s it
, she thought. He was going to get an earful of how she felt. She quickly pressed his name in her phone favorites. The phone rang a few times, and Scarlett feared that he wouldn’t pick up. She was about to give up when Adam finally answered.

“Hey Scar,” Adam said, but his voice was muffled by loud music behind him. Anger coursed through Scarlett’s veins. He had lied to her about being at work. Instead of coming to their date, he was at some bumping club and trying to hide it by stepping outside.

“I knew you weren’t actually at work,” Scarlett said.

“Wait, Scar, it’s not what...”

“Have fun wherever you are at. I can’t do this anymore.” Scarlett cut Adam off.

“Scar, I’m sorry,” Adam said.

“If you were really that sorry, or if you even cared about me at all, you would have made it a point to come to dinner. You have been blowing me off for days now about actually getting together, so I am going to make this super easy for you. We are done. I deserve so much more than this.”

“Scar, come on, let’s talk about this,” Adam said. “I am meeting with a client and…”

“A client?! At a nightclub? Are you fucking kidding me, Adam? I can hear the music in the background.”

Adam became silent.

“That’s exactly what I thought,” Scarlett said. “There is nothing left to talk about.”

“Come on Scars, you know I’m the best thing that has happened to you.”

Scarlett hung up the phone with her hands slightly shaking before Adam could continue.
Holy hell
, she thought. Where had all that power come from? This was the first time she had ever stood up for herself, and it felt fantastic.

Scarlett was always the one to not let people know when she was upset. She hated confrontation, and always did her best to completely avoid it, which meant she would end up more times than not being a mat that people walked all over.

Scarlett paid the check for her wine, and as she left the restaurant she sent a text to her best friend Blair.

H
e stood me up
. Again. I am so done with this bullshit. I ended it.

W
hat an asshole
! Congrats on finally growing a pair and taking control. He isn’t worth your time. I’m coming over with wine to celebrate.

N
o
, you don’t need to do that. I’m just going to curl up on the couch and watch a movie.

Y
ou sure
?

Y
eah
, I’m sure. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.

S
carlett shut
down her phone before Blair could talk her out of it. She knew that Blair was only trying to make her feel better, but at that moment Scarlett just wanted to be alone. She didn’t want to see the look in Blair’s eyes, telling her
I told you so
. Blair had warned her about Adam from the beginning, and Scarlett had ignored her. She had been too caught up in the relationship and fell too quickly for a man that would never actually love her back. That had always been Scarlett’s problem when it came to relationships. She always fell too hard too fast. Blair had warned her so many times to not rush her feelings, but Scarlett couldn’t help it. She was a true romantic at heart.

Scarlett changed into her favorite sweatpants and comfy t-shirt and put in her favorite romantic comedy. Deep down she knew she was stupid to believe in true love and fairytales, especially after her experience with Adam, but a part of her wanted to believe that the fairy tale actually existed.
