March. He would march down the steps. He was wearing Her Majesty’s uniform.

“Mr. Inspector, sir. Your briefcase, sir.”

He turned to see his housekeeper, one hand over her mouth, choking back her laughter, the other extended with his briefcase. He snatched it out of her hand. Let them snicker. He was an Englishman.

Once inside the car, he breathed in deeply, closed his eyes, and leaned back against the plush, dark brown leather seat. He
would set things right. He would see about the choosing Carlos Codrington had done. It would be his word against the word of an Englishman. In Chacachacare he would settle the score for every Englishman whose daughter and sister had become prey these days of the colored man.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

ELIZABETH NUNEZ
was born in Trinidad, in the Caribbean. The second of eleven children, she, as well as her parents, was thrilled when, at nineteen, she was given a scholarship to Marian College in Wisconsin. She returned to Trinidad after graduating, but a year later, confined by the few choices for women in Trinidad at that time, she immigrated to the United States. She says she is very fortunate to be doing now exactly what she loves to do: writing books, reading books, teaching books and organizing public events about books.

Elizabeth is the author of six novels:
When Rocks Dance; Beyond the Limbo Silence
(a novel that closely parallels her experience as a foreign student in a college in Wisconsin in the 60s);
Bruised Hibiscus
, which won the 2001 American Book Award;
Discretion; Grace
, and
Prospero’s Daughter.
She has also contributed essays and stories to anthologies. Now a Distinguished Professor of English of the City University of New York at Medgar Evans College, Elizabeth views teaching as a chance to create for students the same opportunities
that were provided to her. She continues to lecture across the country on literature in general, but more specifically, on her own work, and frequently gives readings. Active in the PEN American Center, Elizabeth chairs committees focussed on promoting the work of writers. She also interviews writers for the radio station WBAI. Elizabeth is Executive Producer for the CUNY TV Emmy-nominated series
Black Writers in America
, which will air across the country on most PBS stations. She is divorced and the mother of Jason Harrell. She lives in Long Island, New York.

Beyond the Limbo Silence

“This powerful illumination of race and culture by the light of dreams, ritual, and Vodoun will remind many of Toni Morrison or Alice Walker.”

—Booklist
(STARRED REVIEW)

Bruised Hibiscus

“Nunez weaves a complex story of race, class, culture, and gender in a polyglot society rife with rumors and memories, superstitions, old grudges, and simmering tensions. This multilayered, beautifully textured novel pulls you in and holds you from beginning to end.”

—Ms. Magazine

Discretion

“ [A] provocative new love story … spare and supple, continually twisting its way toward unexpected perspectives …
Discretion
delivers two memorable characters whose personal clashes, both shared and internalized, are as telling as those of the world they inhabit.”

—THE SEATTLE TIMES
