“Jax,” I moan.”

“I’ve got you, babe,” he says as he begins to set a steady pace.

“Jax, I...”

“Let go babe.”

“God yes, I’m so close.”

“That’s it, babe. Come hard. I’ll catch you.”

“God yes, I’m coming.”

“That’s it, babe.”

“Jax.”

“Babe.”

“Can we do that again?”

“All night long, if that’s what you want.”

Jaxson rolls me over and pulls me up by my hips until I’m up on all fours. This is his second- favorite making-love position. This is what I remember from the Kama Sutra about this kind of “congress.”
“When a woman stands on her hands and feet like a quadruped
(whatever the fuck that is
) and her lover mounts her like a bull, this is called the ‘congress of the cow.’
(Moo!)
At this time everything that is ordinarily done on the bosom should be done on the back.”
Okay...so if a guy likes to pinch and suck on your tits, then he should be doing it to your back? I think we’ll skip this part. Back to the Kama Sutra.
“Other ass mounting positions are congress of the dog, goat, deer and the forcible mounting of an ass.
(ass as in jackass or donkey.)
Then there is the
congress of the cat, the jump of the tiger, the pressing of an elephant, the rubbing of a boar, and the mounting of the horse.”
I have no idea how you jump a tiger, or press an elephant, or rub a boar. Truth be told, I don’t really want to know.

Then it goes on to say something like—
”The characteristics of these different animals should be manifested by
acting like them.”
That brings a whole new meaning when you tell someone to stop acting like an ass, and stop horsing around. Ha. Ha.

Jax grabs hold of my hair and wraps it around his hand. When he comes, he’s going to pull it back. Just you wait and see. And when he does, I’ll come—just like that.

“Fuck, babe. Fuck, I’m going to come.”

He pulls my hair.

“Jax.”

“Let go, babe, I’ve got you.”

And, I do.

* * *

I hear a door shut and soft, little footsteps approaching the bed.

“He’s asleep.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah.”

I hear bedding being pulled back.

“Look, dude.”

They giggle.

I hear them walk around the bed. Then I hear and feel breathing on my face.

“She’s still asleep, dude.”

“No she’s not.”

My right eyelid is lifted.

“See? Look at her eye. She’s awake.”

“I am now.”

I sit up on my elbows and look into two sets of chocolate eyes.

“Are you going to give your mom a kiss?”

They kiss me on my cheek.

“Mom,” JB whispers, “can we?”

“Can you what?”

“Can we sleep with you?”

“Dad says we need to ask first,” Chase adds.

“I see.”

“It’s a new rule,” JB says with a shrug.

I smile. “New rule, huh?”

Chase frowns. “Dad made a lot of new rules.”

“He did? I guess I didn’t get the memo.”

“What?” they both ask.

“Nevermind. Sounds like we need a to have a family meeting so I can be updated on all these new rules.”

“Don’t worry. Dad made you a list,” JB tells me.

“Okay.”

“He made us sign off on them. Dad calls it a behaveable contract,” Chase adds.

“A contract?”

Chase gives me “The Brow.”
“He said it’s how men make promises. I tried to tell him that JB and me are just childrens.”

“Yeah, he tried, Mom. He said your mom will try and re...something.”

“Negotiate?” I finished for him.

“Yeah. He said us men need to stand firm.”

“I see.”

Chase frowns. “Mom...I love dad but...he needs...”

“What, babe?”

“To chill out.”

I smile.

JB shrugs. “Yeah Mom, you need to have a grownup talk with him.”

Chase sighs and look down at his feet.

I lift his chin. “What’s going on, sweet pea?”

“I was bad.”

“Okay.”

“He said Jesus H Christ,” JB yell-whispers.

“I tried to tell him that we are childrens. And that you tell Gram all the time to let us be childrens.”

I look at the clock on my nightstand. It’s just past four a.m. “How about we get more sleep and we will talk about this contract and about being children over breakfast?”

“Okay,” Chase says.

I pat the space between Jaxson and me. “Come on up.”

They crawl over me and JB slides up to his dad’s back. He’ll be asleep in five seconds.

“Mom?”

I turn over and face Chase. I frown when I see the seriousness of his expression.

“What, babe?”

“I’m sorry about the Jesus H Christ thing. Dad’s still mad at me for telling him to ‘pull the stick out of his arse.’ Sometimes I don’t think he loves me.”

I run my hand down his cheek. “Sometimes we do things that others don’t like and they get upset. But that doesn’t mean they stop loving us. Sometimes your dad does things that make me really mad or sad, but I still love him.”

“Dad makes you mad?”

“Yes, and I make him mad all the time, but I know he still loves me. Chase, don’t worry about this contract of your dad’s. I know how to renegotiate.”

“How do you renegotiate?”

“You wake Lester up early, and then ask him to make cinnamon rolls.”

He giggles. “Sick, Mom.”

We knuckle bump.

“Mom. I love you to the moon and back.”

“I love you to the stars.”

He smiles. “Mom, can I kiss my baby sister?”

“Of course you can.” I lift up my tee.

Chase bends over and kisses my belly. “I love you to the moon and back, Peaches,” he whispers.

He lies back down and we cuddle.

“Mom?”

“Chase.”

“Dads pee-pee is standing up.”

I smile. “Okay.”

“Sometimes my pee-pee stands up.”

“Okay,” is all I can say.

“Just sayin’.” He yawns. “Goodnight, Mom.”

“Good night, sweet pee.”

All The King’s Horses and All The King’s Men

Alexia

“Are you sure you don’t want to come?” Jaxson asks me.

“Positive. I can’t stand to watch them fall and get pushed around.”

“It’s all a part of the sport, babe.”

“I get that. But it doesn’t mean I have to watch it. You know I don’t like hockey.”

“Dad!” JB yells, “We’re going to be late for practice!”

“Kevin is going with you. Lee and I will meet you in town for dinner. Just text me when practice is almost over.”

“Okay, babe. What are your plans?”

“The vet called and said he wanted to take a look at Cleo. He has to leave town for some family business and will miss his set appointment on Monday.”

“Doesn’t the barn manager, Hector, take care of all that?”

“Yes, but Saturdays are his day off.”

“Be careful and let Lee know your plans.”

I salute. “Copy that.”

He rolls his eyes.

“I’ll tell him.”

He gives me a kiss and then kisses my belly.

“See you two in a couple of hours,” he says as he walks out of the sunroom.

A few minutes later I make my way to the barn.

I see the vet, Dr. Jim Lake, standing in front of Cleo’s opened stall.

“Jim.” I hold out my hand, “Good to see you.”

He offers his hand. “A pleasure as always, Alexia.”

I look to his left.

He steps aside. “Alexia, this is Max Hall. He’s a student that’s been making the rounds with me for the last couple of weeks.”

I offer Max my hand. “Nice to meet you, Max.”

He gives me a shy smile and shakes my hand. “Nice to meet you, Ms. Grant.”

“I’ve been telling Max about Cleo’s history, and about how far she’s come.”

I turn and run my hand down her beautiful mane. “She’s a fighter, this one,” I say with pride.

Dr. Jim runs a hand across her back. “Yes, she’s a fighter. I showed Max some pictures I took when you first got her.”

Max clears his throat. “She doesn’t even look like the same horse.”

“No she doesn’t,” I answer.

“Do you ride her?”

“It took me a while, but she’s been letting me ride her for the last couple of months.”

“I’d love to see how she does with a rider,” he says and Jim seems to gives him a “you’re out of line” look.

“Sorry,” Max says, “I didn’t mean...”

“Don’t worry about it,” I tell him. “I’d be glad to take her out to the arena and let you see what a beautiful stride she has.”

“It’s not necessary, Alexia,” Jim tells me.

“No, it’s okay. I’m in the mood for a ride.”

“I’ll help you saddle her up, Ms. Grant,” Max says.

I nod my okay.

“Hector has everything color coordinated,” Jim tells him, “Cleo’s things are tagged with red.”

Jim points Max to the tack room and he leaves to gather Cleo’s riding gear.

“Well, if I’m going to ride I’d better change my boots and put on my headgear,” I say and walk toward a small room where I keep such stuff.

I get ready and text Lee that I’m going to take a quick ride around the arena.

When I finish, Cleo is ready and waiting.

“It’s none of my business, Alexia, but is this okay with...” He nods toward my pregnant belly.

“Yes, I’m just going to walk her around the arena a couple of times.”

He nods and helps me mount.

As I mount her I give her a love pat on her neck.

“Let’s go show them how beautiful you are, Cleo,” I tell her.

Jim and Max follow us to the arena.

When we reach the indoor riding arena, Jim opens the gate for me and Cleo trots right in like a pro. Less than a year ago she wouldn’t even let anyone near her. She thought all humans were bastards because that’s all she knew.

Jim and Max stand by the gate as I ride Cleo to the other side of the arena.

“Okay, Cleo, let’s show you off.” I give her a verbal command to walk and she begins to walk around the arena. I loosen up on her reins, giving her the okay to move into a slow, steady gallop.

When we begin to make our third trip around the arena, she comes to a sudden halt. Then she begins to side step.

“It’s okay, girl,” I say in a calm voice.

She continues to become more agitated with each side step. Then she stops again. Her entire body stiffens; her ears go back and she begins to snort. Something is very wrong. I try to calm her with my voice and tighten the reins a bit but things just seem to get worse.

I hear Jim yell from across the arena. “Alexia, what’s going on?!”

“I don’t know, she acts like she’s in pain and ...”

Before I can finish she rears up then takes off in a fast trot. When she reaches the opposite side, she begins to snort and buck. She kicks at the fence and takes off again toward the far side of the arena. When she reaches the far end, I’ve lost all control of her.

I have no idea what’s spooked her. She is a big, strong, beautiful animal and it takes all my strength just to hold on. Then I feel it. Some kind of shock vibrates through the saddle and up my spine. I can no longer feel my legs and begin to slide off the saddle. Then I feel a stronger shockwave and I lose all control of my arms and hands. Cleo spins, bucks, and then takes off again. She runs at full speed toward the gate, and I feel another jolt of electricity. Then everything fades to black...
