He broke the kiss and roared. The glass tumbler on the nightstand shattered.

Colin turned over and reached for Robbie. She was safe, he was Alpha, all was right in his world. For the first time in a long time he was happy. He patted empty space and cracked a lid open.

The bed was empty.

He sat up and glanced around. On her pillow sat an envelope; he snatched it up and ripped it open.

Going after Seri. R

“Oh, baby, I’m coming after you,” he said aloud. He would show her just how pissed he was when he caught her, too. His Robbie needed a good spanking. He moved and a tight cylinder of rubber-banded papers rolled across his fingers.

Epilogue

Robbie held her mother’s hand tight as the pain bowled through her again. She panted through the contractions. Her mother whispered encouraging words and brushed her hair from her head.

Nurses hovered around her and the doctor was issuing orders while giving her a blow-by-blow of what was happening below the sheet that blocked her view. Light cries rent the air. “You have a beautiful baby girl!”

Her mother leaned her head over the barrier and grinned. “She looks like a doll.” Mildred glanced back at Robbie and nodded.

The doctor held her baby up and her daughter let out another wail. He flipped her over and laid the babe on her chest. She knew what love was. She’d done many things out of love, but other than Marree and Seri, she’d never experienced the feeling so instantaneously. Her baby girl was beyond beautiful. Even wrinkled, with a slight coned head, her little one was stunning. Robbie reached up and touched her tiny fingers, counting them. Sandy-brown hair covered her head and she rubbed the downy, soft strands.

If only. Her original intention was to go after Seri then go back and collect Marree to raise all three girls together. Through twelve states she debated with herself what would be best for her girls and her determination was always the same. She wanted her children. Instead, Malachai got wind of her plans and sent men after her. At first she was going to run to Colin, seek shelter with him. With everything Colin had gone through to protect his pack, she wouldn’t bring trouble to his door. She went home to her mother. Colin had posted her letter and when she arrived on her mom’s doorstep, Mildred was waiting. Not once did her mom question the validity of her claims; she simply supported her daughter.

Unsure if Malachai knew about her baby, she packed up her mother and they went on the run. Bless her mama for keeping her sane. She muddled through different doctors in every new city they temporarily settled in. Homeless shelters and thrift stores had become a way of life for her. She missed Colin badly, but he didn’t deserve the trouble she would cause.

A nurse laid a blanket over the baby and picked her up. “Have you thought about a name?”

Robbie nodded. “Yeah,” she glanced at her mom who watched the nurse like a hawk. “I’m naming her after my mom, her grandmother. Mildred Colina Carlyle.”

“That’s beautiful, Colina is different. Where did you get that name?”

“To honor someone I love.” Robbie’s smile withered.

The nurse handed the tot over to her mother and Mildred sat staring at the baby, touching her soft skin with wrinkled fingertips. Her mother looked up. Mildred’s lips were turned down and her eyes watered. “That man, the one you were telling me about, you have to go back and take the baby with you. If he can protect you…she deserves at least that.”

“He’s given up so much already.” Robbie shook her head. “I won’t add more to his plate.”

“But…”

“No, Mama, we talked about this.” Robbie’s heart was breaking once she was released from the hospital, she would put her baby in hiding, too. Nurses offered her curious glances as they cleaned up the room and she waited until they left. “Let’s enjoy her while we can.”

Somehow she had to get to her babies. Maybe she could alter her plans and set up her mother with an apartment and some funds and she could continue running. Malachai was after her, not her little girl, she hoped.

“She is perfect.” Her mother spoke aloud. “Look at her eyes; your grandma use to call them cat eyes.” She dipped her head and nuzzled her cheek.

Robbie swallowed; she had a few days. She would figure something out. Maybe she could hide them all in Alaska. That was big country and Colin was always talking about it. Suddenly she became aware of men yelling, then there was a crash. Robbie watched as medical personnel rushed past her door. Despite the pain, she rose from her bed.

“You shouldn’t be up.” Mildred’s brows came together.

“I know.” Robbie shuffled to the door and cracked it open.

“You’re going to tell me what I want to hear, or I will have this hospital razed to its foundations.” She knew that condescending tone. It had been almost a year but she would never forget Malachai’s voice. She rammed the door shut. How the fuck had he found her? Shit, he knew about her baby. “Mama, I need you to help me get dressed.”

“It’s too soon—” Mildred stammered.

“I don’t have time for this. We have to leave now!” She hobbled to the closet and snatched out her clothing.

Her mother set the baby on the bed and helped her dress. “Listen, Mama. When we walk out of here, you go to the elevators. I’ll take the stairs.” It would take her right past the bastard and she would provide the diversion so her mother and baby could get out of the building.

“You can’t…”

“Stop telling me what I can’t do and follow my instructions. I’ll meet you outside by the ambulatory entrance.” Robbie struggled to get the heavy door open and slipped through the thin crack she created.

She walked toward Malachai; he and his men were surrounded by security. Robbie was squeezing between two doctors when she was yanked up by the arm. “There you are.” She was spun around and met the cold face of her rapist, Malachai.

“How did you find me?” she whispered.

“I have eyes everywhere never forget that. I will always find you. It’s time to come home.” Malachai rumbled as he pulled her closer, staring into her face. “Seri wants her sister and I want my family.”

Beyond his shoulders she watched her mother step onto the elevator with the baby securely in her arms. Resigned that she would have to find a safe place for her little girl, she opened her mouth and screamed.

Guards piled in and she was sure she was going to throw up as she was pushed to and fro. A nurse pulled her free and she offered the kind woman a smile of thanks before brushing the woman’s hands away and hurrying toward the bank of elevators herself. She really had no place to hide.

The elevator dinged and she climbed into the cab. She met Malachai’s frigid stare as she pressed the button and shot him the finger. Robbie would keep her baby safe even if it meant giving her up. Seeing Malachai only reinforced her notion that returning to Colin wasn’t safe.
Maybe one day, Colin.
She brushed the tears away that lined her cheeks as they fell.
