"Padme?" Sylvie asked.

"The puppy. You know."

"Puppy?" She looked at Polly.

"I told you about them. Andrew decided that one is his. Do I need to fix that decision?"

"I'm taking two," Eliseo said, his chest shaking with laughter.

"Are you going to house train her before she moves in?" Sylvie asked her son.

"We can really have her? Really?"

Sylvie smiled and said to Polly. "I thought you were joking."

"Nope." Polly gave her friend an evil smirk. "It's as if it were meant to be."

"Then it looks like we'll have one more warm body to move into this house," she said.

Andrew and Rebecca ran out of the room and back up the stairs.

"It's a good thing I already planned to let him have a dog or I'd have your head, Polly Giller," Sylvie said, scowling.

"I didn't promise him anything. He made this up all by himself. You're the one who caved."

"Come on, Jason," Eliseo said, putting his hand on Jason's back. "We'd best get back to work and let these two discuss this in private."

"Aww, that's no fun," Jason said, chuckling, but he left with Eliseo.

"If you don't want the puppy, I can fix this," Polly said.

"No, I'm teasing you. I had promised Andrew and Jason that we would. And we might as well help you with all of your crazy rescues now that we have a home of our own."

Polly hugged her friend. "This is an amazing house. I can't wait to see what you do with it. Can you believe it? A degree, a career and now a house. What's next?"

"I think that's enough for now. I'd like to raise my boys in peace for a while. No extra people, no extra stress."

"Extra people are what make it fun."

"That's why you are such a great friend. You really believe that."

"Of course I do. And we wouldn't want Bellingwood to get boring, would we?"

"Since you moved in, boring no longer describes this town." Sylvie shivered with glee and looked around the kitchen. "I'm so glad you came along. Boring doesn't describe me any longer either."

Polly smiled. This was why she enjoyed her life so much. There was nothing better than watching her friends fill their lives with good things. She nodded to herself as she wondered what was going to come next.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

The photos on the cover were taken by my photographer husband, Maxim Muir in 2008. Someone asked if I'd actually taken the trip that Polly and Henry made and the answer is yes. I'm not sure if I could have made up her responses to the sights they saw if I'd not experienced them. Max wanted one chance at Route 66, a return to Monument Valley and Canyonlands in Utah, and I was desperate to see the Grand Canyon. We spent quite a bit more time in locations as he grabbed every opportunity he could with his cameras, but the route was similar. You can find a copy of the blogs I wrote during the trip on my website by clicking

Thank you to Rebecca Bauman, Tracy Kesterson Simpson, Linda Watson, Carol Greenwood, Alice Stewart, Fran Neff, Max Muir, Edna Fleming and Nancy Quist for all they do to make these books happen. Without their input, challenges and editing, my stories would be less than they are. I will never be able to adequately say thank you.
