Bear Naked Satisfaction (Billionaire Bear Trio Book 3)
Chapter 1
Andrea clutched Reed’s upper arm with both of her hands; this large and athletic man was the only thing keeping her moving as the two of them trekked their way up the Andes Mountains in northern Colombia. Her burning body made the icy air bite harder into her flesh, her sweat cold and thick. The soft wind somehow managed to constantly slap her face and sting her eyes, and the air itself was too thin to fully inhale—to fully utilize. Everything about this place seemed determined to hurt her, though the distant snowcaps that surrounded them and the specs of trees far below them was a beautiful sight. Occasionally, Andrea would glance around and try to appreciate the magnificence of the setting, but the more she moved the more worn she became.
She heaved breaths, her own sense of direction having died in a disoriented, exhausted haze hours ago. She swore that every fiber of her being throbbed with over-exertion and pain, and if Reed would only allow it, she would be content to collapse on the rocky ground and rest for a moment. Just a moment.
She was so, so glad that they left their suitcases at the hotel, per his suggestion.
“There has to be a better way to do this,” she said for the umpteenth time, gasping out the last few words.
“We’re almost there,” Reed responded for the umpteenth time.
“I don’t believe you,” she wheezed, her nails digging into his clothes. She blinked hard, her vision blurring. She pressed her cold face against the back of his shoulder, the cloth on it scratching against her.
“Actually,” he said, “we’re here.”
Andrea’s head snapped up, and it spun in response. Forcing herself to stay upright, she concentrated harder on the sight before her. After a few seconds, she saw the outline of a large estate built into the mountain. A tall, dark gate surrounded the premises, and there were several armed guards who walked in front of it and behind it. Everything—even the guards’ uniforms—matched the colors of the mountain.
Despite her weariness of dealing with someone as paranoid and secretive as Fernando Vergara—the last of the Billionaire Trio—she was also eager to get inside a building already. Not only was she desperate to breathe breathable air again, but she was desperate to finally get the proof she needed to reveal the existence of these bear-shifters…and betray Reed in the process.
That last thought made Andrea’s stomach twist. Numbly, she pressed her lips against Reed’s shoulder, as if in apology.
He didn’t glance back.
After Reed told the guards various passcodes, he and Andrea were allowed to approach the front gate and speak into the intercom. Unlike Reed’s intercom, there was no static when Fernando’s voice came out of it.
“What the hell were you thinking bringing her here?!”
Andrea’s eyebrows shot up as Reed sighed.
“Fernando,” Reed said, hunching toward the intercom a little. “Let me—”
“I trusted you,” Fernando snarled, “and this is how you repay me? You, of all people, I did not expect this from.”
“Just hear me out! Stop jumping to conclusions for once and just listen.”
Silence followed. Andrea, panting and swaying, looked around. She didn’t see any cameras, though she had heard rumors about Fernando Vergara having thousands of hidden devices throughout his multiple properties. When Andrea noticed a small red light blinking a few feet above the intercom, she squinted at it.
“She’s a journalist,” Reed said when Fernando continued to be silent. “That Andrea Watson who Hank called about. And she knows everything about us and what we’re trying to do. She wants to help.”
Fernando’s voice burst out of the intercom, the sound so sharp that it was piercing. “You did what?! For God’s sake, Reed, if she’s a journalist, then she’s probably using you.”
Andrea felt something within her soul recoil, even as shame warmed her face. She looked at Reed, who was frowning at the little speaker.
“I—”
Fernando snarled several more words in Spanish. Then, in English, he said, “Get in here, now.”
“Not without her,” Reed said evenly.
Fernando hesitated, and Andrea was convinced he was going to yell in Spanish again. Her eyes bulged when, instead, Fernando agreed to Reed’s terms. And he did so in a calmly manner.
“No technological devices are allowed past this point,” Fernando said before the intercom
clicked
and then went silent.
It took Andrea a few seconds to fully process that last statement. When she did, she scoffed at such a notion and turned to Reed. “He’s serious?” Her voice choked off the second she saw Reed take out his cell and a pair of earbuds from his pocket.
“Always,” Reed said, clearly exasperated. He gave her a warm smile. “But he has his reasons. He’s a good guy, underneath it all.”
A guard, seemingly coming out of nowhere, stepped in between them and frisked Reed. A different guard walked up to Reed and took the items out of his hands.
As Andrea blinked owlishly at this sight, two other guards moved to stand beside her. Their sudden presence made her blood tingle and her throat close, and she all but leapt from where she stood. If these men and women noticed, they didn’t show it; they just took Andrea’s items and frisked her like they were Reed.
She was relieved that she had the foresight to leave the tape recorder and the camera (the cheap one she bought at the airport) in the rental car, parked near the base of the mountain.
