An exquisitely decorated room

Morning

The dream she had was beyond horrible. She was fighting for breath as well as her life, and the more she struggled, the faster life seemed to leave her. Then, just when she was about to expire, she screamed from the top of her lungs, and the image of her assailant shattered into a million pieces.

“Help me!” She shouted, rising into a prone position from her bed.
My bed?
She looked around the room as her breathing slowly normalized. This was not her home. The crimson sheets, the gold-tinted windows and furniture, the way it all came together so perfectly; it all reminded her of the Duke.

Of course!
She forced herself to recall the events from last night, although every part of her resisted that course of action. Everything was blurry, but the facts remained unchanged. The poor part of the city, her betrothed, and the man who had tried to force himself on her.
And whom my betrothed had killed in order to protect me.
A slight warmth started expanding through her bosom, although it was somewhat weaker than the last time she had thought of the Duke.
What in the world was he doing there?
she asked herself again. As if to answer her question, her betrothed entered the room almost within the moment.

“How are you feeling, my delicate beauty?” His voice was like the silk that made up the sheets in his room. Even though she had wanted to be angry at him, Rose found herself unable. “You had fainted, and I was forced to bring you back into my humble abode without anyone noticing. Most definitely
not
an easy task, mind you! I have also taken the liberty of notifying your parents that you have fallen ill while accompanying me on that party you’ve followed me from. Good job, by the way! You are a girl of many talents, lovely. As your future husband, I am quite honored.”

At first, she wanted to get straight to the point, but then she noticed that the sleeping gown she wore was not one of her own. Instead of saying anything, all she did was blush.

“Ah. Do not worry, beloved.” The Duke was quick to point out. “I have instructed a serving girl of mine to redress you. I would not dream of touching any girl, let alone you, without mutual consent.”

Now somewhat relived, yet still uncomfortable, Rose finally found the courage to say something. “My Duke…
my future husband
, care telling me what, in the Lord’s name, did you do last night? No, never mind that, what have you been up to, oh, for the last
several months
or so?” She had tried her best to control the tone of her voice, but it still came up quite angry. For a brief moment, she was afraid that the Duke would take offense. However, the expression on his face seemed almost repentant.

“Rose, my dear, I am afraid that you have caught me in a rather sinister deception,” he said in a grim tone. “You see, I am afraid that I do not come close to the charming image that London’s nobility has of me. Should you ask anyone of note, the young Duke Thomas Moore is the most graceful, rich, and well-spoken man of his generation; an exemplar of what British society should aspire to. The reality, I am afraid, is far beneath that.”

“Why, what ever could you mean?” She had given her best at deciphering what it was that he was saying. Sadly, she did not succeed. “If it weren’t for your disappearances, you’d have been the most perfect gentleman ever to grace London!” She wanted to ask him what the disappearances meant, but something told her that he needed reassurance at the moment.

“I am trying to speak seriously with you, my love.” The way he said the word
love
caused the fire in her bosom to reignite significantly. “What if I told you that the real me was not the man you think you know? What if the real Thomas Moore is an emotionally scarred young man with abundant resources and an uncontrollable desire to do
justice
?”

Still not completely sure what he meant, all Rose could do was try and feel around the subject until she found something to grasp at. “But… are one’s actions not part of the individual? Even if you do not consider your image genuine, it is still your own creation. Not just anyone could have been as good at being you as you were, you know? I, for one, am certain that no one could,” she found herself saying.

Somewhat lost in thought, the Duke stared into the floor for a good while. When he raised his head and spoke, he was even more serious than before. “Unlike you, my dear, and I mean absolutely no disrespect, I had lost both of my parents. My mother was the first to go, having died while giving birth to me. It was for this reason that my father was my
everything
. He had taught me how to be a man; the things one must know and do in order to not merely survive, but
thrive
in this world we live in. He had instilled in me a deep sense of just purpose that sets the man apart from the beast, that nonetheless most men choose to outright ignore. And then, one horrible day, he was taken from me and from the world.”

He paused for a brief moment, giving her a chance to collect her thoughts. Rose considered saying something, but chose to give him a chance to say his piece.
After all that is what a lady should do,
a voice inside head exclaimed, but she knew that it was not completely true. It is what
she
should do, both as a human being and as the Duke’s future wife.

“The old Duke Moore enjoyed doing charity work. Despite having been warned numerous times, he insisted that the poor in London’s rookeries needed taking care of in order to rise above their stature. Alas, his faith in man proved to be his undoing. A known vagabond and scoundrel crossed his path one day, publically called him names and humiliated him in front of everyone present. Being a
man
, my father could do nothing less than demand satisfaction… And paid for it with his life.”

“Did he lose a duel?” Rose asked, taking special care as to weigh every word that left her mouth.

“A
duel
? A duel is a fair fight between men, culminating in victory of the strongest! When a piece of
trash
throws a poisoned knife on a man, who dies within the day in horrendous agony, that is no duel! That is
evil,
plain and clear!” He looked at her intensely, as if he expected her to say something. She did not dare. “It is to such scum that I have lost my father, and it is against such scum that I have sworn to act against! It has fallen on
my
shoulders to help the poor people in London’s poor parts, lest they not
live
long enough to rise from the depths they originate from. Do you not see?”

Someone else might not have understood him. Had he taken the hand of anyone else, he might have been dismissed as a lunatic after the tantrum he had just made. But Rose could see into his soul, right through those crystal blue eyes of his. Everything was clear to her: his sadness, his drive, and his compulsion to right every wrong on this world.
But does he know just how many wrongs there are?
He would sooner go mad than get to fix everything, and the thought terrified her to no end. “I see,” she replied after a short contemplation. She could tell from his expression that he believed her.

“I am glad that you do…” It was discreet, but she could swear that he had sighed in relief. “My crusade against the lowest of the low used to be the only thing that drove me to go on. Yes,
used to
. I have found something else in the meantime, something
better
. Care to know what it is?”

She did not need to ask, having already seen the answer in his eyes, but she nevertheless wanted to hear him say it. “Please tell me, my Duke,” she answered with a smile.

“I have found
you,
my darling Rose. Your beauty, your zest for life, the way you smiled… and the way you yearned to break free from the fate forced upon you by your parents, it all fascinated me to no end. Like a moth to a flame I was drawn to you, unable to contain my desire to make you mine and no one else’s! I saw how you would complete me, and I could tell that you felt the same way. It is for that reason that I—“ He was still talking when Rose leapt toward him, held him between her thighs and buried her tongue into his mouth.

I want you!
she silently spoke to him, and he responded in kind. With a firm grip, he grabbed her by the backside, buried his fingers inside and moved toward the bed she had just leapt from. Almost breaking it, he tossed her right in the middle of the crimson sheet as he unfastened his pants in a single motion. Then, just as she was about to say something, leapt on top of her like a wild beast and entered her viciously.

“Yeessss!” She gasped, the pain of the penetration being almost as strong as the pleasure. Still, her desire to have him inside her, to
be
with him, now and always, easily dwarfed something as unimportant as discomfort.

As if he knew exactly how he felt, he pulled out just a little bit, allowing her to regain her breath, right before he thrust inside her at full force, causing the coils inside the bed to resonate loudly.

“Aaahhhh….” She moaned gently, dragging her nails over the back of his shirt. It was silky, just as everything else in the room was. It all worked in tandem to immerse her deeper in the moment; make her forget everything but her Duke, and the way he was making love to her.

He started going in and out of her in quicker succession then. Slowly, at first, but increasing his pace more and more, causing her breathing to accelerate as well, along with her moans. The pain was going away, slowly being replaced by an overwhelming pleasure. “Faster!” She found herself shout. The Duke did just that.

Having grabbed Rose by the waist, Thomas proceeded to work his way in and out of her at a speed that made her dizzy. Her entire body shook, and an array of pleasant shocks was rapidly spreading over and across her body. She could no longer see her surroundings, only her Duke and the expression he had: that of overwhelming desire. The feeling was more than mutual. Then, the currents that ran through her body spilled out of control, and drowned out absolutely everything.

Rose did not exist anymore, and neither did Thomas. They were now one: wrapped together in a union of bliss.

Moore manor

One year later

With a smile on her face, Rose Moore walked down the stairs of her home. Even though she had lived here for well over eight months now, the place never failed to impress her.
It is as if it is my first time.
She chuckled, thinking of her Duke while she kept descending.
Not unlike the way we make love to each other.

Now back on ground floor, she observed the hall where her mother and father had brought her to discuss the marriage arrangement. He was so beautiful, her husband; so charming and witty.
And he still is, thank the Lord for that,
she thought while making her way toward Thomas’ workroom.

What she had managed to do was not easy in the least, but she had succeeded, and felt rightfully proud of it. A year has passed since the last time Thomas went out into one of the rookeries seeking trouble.
And I plan on keeping it at that.

She did not know what she’d do if he got injured or worse, and she did not plan on finding out. Oh, he did feel the need to go and do his thing from time to time, but she would always calm him down.
Married life is about compromises,
she told herself.
If you cannot change for the person that makes you happy, then I guess that you do not deserve to be happy in the first place.
She knew that she needed Thomas in order to feel fulfilled. He felt the same; she could tell from every word he ever said (or did not say) to her.
It is the sole reason he had managed to stay away from danger up until now,
she knew. And the fact made her proud and content at the same time.

Now outside of her husband’s workroom, she knocked three times.

“It is open, my lovely!” His voice echoed from the other side.
Smooth as silk, and strong like a rope. That is my Duke!

“Will you be needing anything tonight?” She asked him with a smile as she entered his chamber.

“I ache, Rose,” he said in a somber tone. He stared at the notebook in front of him, his eyes heavy and his expression dark. “My appetites are unmet, and I crave release,” he said after a short break.

Oh, no! Not this again!
She slammed the door behind her and ran to the table, ignoring the constraints of her corset. “It is fine, my love! Please, do not go! Do not leave and get yourself into danger!” She said, her eyes meeting his own. Then, the extent of his deception became apparent to him, and she almost got angry at him.
Almost.
His eyes were smiling. The rest of his face soon followed.
He was jesting with me!

“Now, why would I want to leave when the means of satiating my appetites stand right before me?” He asked her in a roguish tone.

Rose tried to say something in response, but he was way too quick for her. Like a tiger after a pounce, her Duke was already on his feet, his lips planted firmly on her own in a passionate kiss.

I guess there are things that never change,
she managed to think, a moment before desire overtook her mind completely.
