He fought the heat rising from his gut. Where was Rick going with this? “You said you needed to date other people to figure out your sexuality. And you wanted me to date other people to have that experience.”

“Yeah, but I’m an idiot. You were right. You date to find the right person, and when you find the right person, you stop dating.”

His chest rumbled with soft laughter. “Boy, you liked that vibrator more than I expected.”

Rick’s brow furrowed, his eyes darkening and turning liquid. “I’m serious. If being with you makes me happy, then what else do I need to know?”

He kissed him. “Your identity, babe.”

“Does it matter whether I’m gay or bi, when I’m in love with you?”

An ache gripped his temples. Rick was offering him the one thing he wanted most in the world. Could he risk accepting it? In the best of circumstances, love came with no guarantees. But especially not when you were eighteen and living in different states and one of you was questioning his sexuality.

The odds were against them. And yet…sometimes people married their high school sweethearts, and it worked out. If Rick was willing to try, then Jordan was, too.

He squeezed Rick’s hands. “So, no dating other people?”

“Just you and me. I want to be your boyfriend.”

The words untied the careful knot he had kept on his emotions. Joy washed over him. Ragged breaths sputtered into his chest until he pulled in a deep gulp of air, opening his lungs.

He swallowed down the knot in his throat. “Are you coming out?” His voice was soft and strained.

Rick bit his lower lip. “Are you asking me to?”

“Not if you’re not ready.”

“This is still new to me.”

“I know.” Jordan kissed him. “What are you going to tell Cyn?”

“That it’s over. She doesn’t need to know why. She’ll assume it’s because of college, and that’s reason enough.”

“You’re over her?”

“I’ll never be over her. She was my first love.”

Jordan shook his head. “No—I was. Since first grade.”

Rick kissed him slow and tender. “You’ll always be mine, Jordy. Nothing can break the bond between us.”

He rested his head on Rick’s shoulder and looked out the window at the rolling hills. The friendship and love and sex between them weren’t separate things but one. The future that stretched before them was uncertain but exciting. Jordan was content to live one day at a time. For now, he had everything he wanted.
