“
Just be yourself.
Like all creatures, I learn from observation. Do what you do and that
will be enough. And the first lesson you will teach me will be, I
hope, humility.”
“
Humility? Why? What
do you need to be humble about?”
Sariel didn't reply. He
simply nodded ahead in the direction that they were walking.
Chris looked that way and
finally realized that they weren't just wandering aimlessly across
the barren plains of Purgatory. They were walking toward the massive
line of mountains that Sariel had pointed out to him the first time
he had been there.
The mountain range
stretched from one edge of the horizon to the other. They were taller
than any mountains could be on Earth, reaching into the pale,
featureless sky so high that even from that distance, they made Chris
crane back his neck to see their jagged peaks.
In the exact center of the
range of monolithic ridges was a gap. Split exactly in half as if a
gigantic knife had sliced them cleanly in two, the mountains stood
separated by this unnatural opening.
Chris' eyes widened as he
saw their destination.
“
But Sariel, didn't
you tell me that that gap leads to...”
He couldn't seem to find
the words to continue. Surely Sariel wasn't taking them there!
“
Yes, you remember
correctly. That opening leads to the gates of Heaven itself.”
The archangel's voice was
grim and there was no sign of joy or anticipation on his face.
Chris reached out, grabbed
his twin and stopped him abruptly. Sariel turned and looked at him in
surprise.
“
But you exiled
yourself. You pledged to never return until your job of protecting
the road to Heaven was done, even if that meant standing guard
forever.”
“
I know what I
said.” Sariel glared at him. “And I meant every word. But
things have changed. Purgatory is corrupted. The road to Heaven is no
longer secure. So I have to go back. And you have to come with me.”
He began to doggedly walk
again and Chris followed him reluctantly.
“
But why do you need
me?” he asked desperately. He wasn't sure why, but the very
thought of seeing Heaven was terrifying.
“
I told you. I need
you to keep me humble. I must not lose control. I must petition my
brother Michael as a supplicant, not as an equal.”
“
Michael?”
Chris stared at Sariel, more confused than ever. “Why do you
need to speak to Michael?”
“
Because,”
Sariel said simply, “I need to stop my demonic brother once and
for all. And the only one with enough power to help me, besides my
Father, is Michael.”
“
You expect him to
help you kill the Devil?” Chris asked in disbelief.
“
No, of course not.
I need Michael to send me to Hell.”
