She was looking into her small, cream handbag, checking that everything was there, as if she had spread its contents on the table at some stage during the conversation and was concerned to retrieve it all. "In the mean time, give my regards to John."

Helena heard an implication, but it trailed into the background conversation and was therefore lost.

"What does that mean?" The question was one of those that people have to ask, knowing that the answer will slice through their eyesight, dissect their certainties.

Beverley was standing, irritatingly shapely. "John's a wonderful man. You're very lucky."

She turned away and over her shoulder came the words, "Give him my very best regards."

She left, and Helena fought with conjured daemons, dreadfully afraid of what she was thinking.

Benjamin Starling lifted the phone, asked for a number in Norway, and then waited. When the call was answered, he said, "I think that we can reactivate Proteus
now
