Cora eyed Chief Harper narrowly. “It certainly would.”
“Particularly with the puzzle getting torn off the sword and all. And you finding it in the woods. That would be enough to make one think.”
“Think what, Chief?”
“Oh, I don’t know. Of the various legal statutes involved. Tampering with evidence. Suppressing evidence. Failure to report a crime. It could be quite a mess.”
“Sounds like it could.”
Harper studied the stapler, shook his head. “I don’t know what I would have done.”
Cora shrugged and smiled.
“Good thing you didn’t look in my purse.”
Many of the puzzles in this book are sudoku. The Puzzle Lady had never dealt with number puzzles before, and found it a refreshing change. I, on the other hand, had no idea how to construct them. Luckily, Will Shortz,
New York Times
crossword puzzle editor, NPR puzzle master, star of the movie
Wordplay
, and editor and presenter of his own series of enormously popular sudoku books, had no problem. Will created all the sudoku that appear in this book. I can’t thank him enough.
I would also like to thank the versatile Manny Nosowsky for creating both the Puzzle Lady’s crossword puzzles and that of the killer. Manny is so adept at fiendish construction that if there was ever an actual crossword puzzle killing, he would be the first person I would suspect. In which case, I would have to inform the police. I hope he understands.
I would also like to thank Ellen Ripstein for editing words and numbers alike. “I’m not particularly good at sudoku,” Ellen said, before whipping right through them. I suppose all things are relative. A national champion, Ellen is particularly good with words. She is the true Puzzle Lady.
