CHAPTER 11
 

• Edward and Bella watch a movie in Biology class; Bella is hyperaware of Edward sitting next to her

Mike tells Bella he doesn’t like the idea of her and Edward; Edward quizzes Bella about all her favorite things; Billy and Jacob Black see Edward with Bella

CHAPTER 12
 

• Bella is afraid Billy Black will tell Charlie about Edward

• Sitting with Edward at lunch, Bella sees Rosalie glaring at her

Edward explains that it will be dangerous for his whole family if, after he spends time with her publicly, things end badly; Bella tells her friends she is not going to Seattle with Edward after all

• Edward meets Bella Saturday morning and she drives to the trailhead

They hike five miles to the meadow

CHAPTER 13
 

• In the sunshine Edward’s skin sparkles like diamonds

Bella gazes at his beauty and touches his hand and forearm; Bella leans in to smell Edward’s breath and he is caught off guard; Edward is gone in a moment; when he calms down he demonstrates his deadly speed and strength; Edward promises not to hurt Bella; he tries to explain why it is so difficult for him; Edward and Bella try slowly and carefully to be close to each other; Edward is surprised at his control

• Edward carries Bella back to the truck piggyback

• Edward carefully kisses Bella for the first time

CHAPTER 14
 

• On the drive home from the meadow, Edward tells Bella how Carlisle created the rest of his family; he explains that Alice and Jasper joined them later, and tells Bella about Alice’s special talent

Edward admits that he watches Bella sleep; Edward stays that night with Bella, tells her about the talents of his other family members; Edward sings Bella to sleep

CHAPTER 15
 

• Edward takes Bella to meet his family; Bella is afraid they won’t like her

• Edward kisses Bella a second time; she faints

• Bella meets Carlisle, Esme, Alice, and Jasper; Jasper spreads a feeling of ease in the room

• Edward plays the piano for Bella—her lullaby

• They tour the house; Edward explains some of Carlisle’s history

CHAPTER 16
 

• Edward takes Bella into Carlisle’s office and shows her his artwork, including a painting of Carlisle with Aro, Caius, and Marcus; Bella learns more of Carlisle’s history

• Edward shows Bella his room and reveals more of his own history

CHAPTER 17
 

• Bella receives a visit and a warning from Billy Black

• Edward comes to meet Charlie and to take Bella on a date to play baseball

• The Cullens wait for the thunderstorm to start so they can play ball

Three other vampires hear the game and come to play; the Cullens worry about Bella’s safety

CHAPTER 18
 

• Laurent, James, and Victoria enter the ballfield

A breeze blows Bella’s scent toward James; James wonders why the Cullens brought “a snack”

• Edward is frantic to get Bella away from James

Bella wants to protect Charlie; she comes up with a plan

CHAPTER 19
 

• Bella tells Charlie she is going back to Phoenix

• James hears her and follows her

• The Cullens split up: Alice and Jasper take Bella to Phoenix, while the others use Bella’s scent to try to trap James and kill him

CHAPTER 20
 

• Alice, Jasper, and Bella stay in a motel near the Phoenix airport and wait

Bella asks Alice how to become a vampire

• Alice has a vision of James in a room with mirrors

Bella recognizes Alice’s drawing as her old ballet studio in Phoenix

• Carlisle calls and Bella talks to Edward; they have lost James

Bella calls her mother and leaves a message that she needs to talk to her right away

CHAPTER 21
 

• Alice has a vision of James in Bella’s mother’s house

Alice calls Edward; he’s coming to get Bella and take her to safety

• Bella gets a phone call from her mother; it turns out to be James

James tells her to get away from the Cullens, to go to her mother’s house and call him from there, or else her mother will die

CHAPTER 22
 

• Alice, Jasper, and Bella go to the airport to meet Edward

• Bella sneaks away and takes a cab to her mother’s house

Bella calls James; James tells her to meet him at the dance studio; Bella goes and sees that her mother is not there—it was only a video

• James tells her how he found her and explains that he is making a video of her death for Edward to see

James tells Bella that he once wanted Alice, but she was changed into a vampire too soon

• Bella tries to run but James smashes her into the mirrors, then snaps her leg

Bella’s head is bleeding; James loses control; Bella raises her hand to protect her face

CHAPTER 23
 

• Edward, Carlisle, and the others arrive at the studio

• Carlisle tends to Bella’s wounds; he must stop the bleeding

Bella screams that her hand is burning; Carlisle sees that James bit Bella’s hand; Carlisle tells Edward he must hurry and suck out the venom; Edward is worried, but determined; Edward saves Bella

CHAPTER 24
 

• Bella wakes up in the hospital; Edward is there

Edward tells her that Emmett and Jasper took care of James; Alice has viewed the videotape

• Renée comes into the room; she wants Bella to move to Florida, but Bella refuses

• Edward had thought Bella might want to move away

Bella makes him promise he won’t leave her; Edward says he’ll stay as long as it makes her happy, as long as it’s what’s best for her

• Bella wants Edward to change her into a vampire

He refuses; they are at an impasse

EPILOGUE
 

• Edward surprises Bella by
taking her to the prom

Bella doesn’t want to go—she can’t dance, plus she’s wearing a cast on one leg; Edward lifts her onto his feet and they dance

• Jacob Black shows up

Billy Black has paid Jacob to give a message to Bella—they want her to break up with Edward

• Bella dances again with Edward

• She wants him to change her into a vampire right away; he wants her to stay human; she says being with him is enough for now

CHAPTER 1
 

• Bella has a dream about her grandmother, who turns out to be Bella as an old woman; Edward enters the dream and wishes her “Happy Birthday”

• It’s Bella’s eighteenth birthday, and Alice has planned a party at the Cullens’ house

• Bella and Edward watch a video of
Romeo and Juliet

Edward envies Romeo’s ease of suicide; Edward tells Bella that he wouldn’t live if something happened to her—he would go to Italy and provoke the Volturi; Bella takes a picture of Edward with her new camera

• Bella and Edward go to the birthday party

Bella gets a paper cut while opening a present; Jasper loses control at the smell of her blood; Edward pushes Bella out of danger, but into the crystal dishes; she cuts her arm; Bella looks up to see six suddenly ravenous vampires
