Q&A with Martha Wells

Q: The world you created is completely unlike ours— do you plan on doing any other books set in the same universe?

A: I really don’t have any plans at this time. There are too many other books I want to write first.

Q: There is a lot of Asian influence in this book; have you ever gone to Asia to research? And how long did the research take?

A: I wish! The city is based on the temple complex at Angor Wat in Cambodia, and I’d really love to go there someday. I was pretty much doing the research the entire time it took me to write the book, which I believe was close to two years.

Q: What are you working on now? Is your next book going to be a sequel to
Wheel of the Infinite
or others you have written? Any continuing characters or worlds from previous books?

A: My next book is the first of a three-book series set partially in Ile-Rien, the land in which
The Death of the Necromancer
and
The Element of Fire
are set. It’s a generation later (a 1920s-1930s parallel), and Ile-Rien is involved in a war with a mysterious people called the Gardier, who use dirigibles and are resistant to magic. Nicholas and
Madeline’s daughter Tremaine, a playwrite, is the central character. There are many references to characters from
The Death of the Necromancer
, such as Nicholas and Arisilde, and the magical spheres that Edouard, Nicholas’s guardian, invented.

Q: Did you have a day job? Did you still have one?

A: I work part time as a programmer for a company that does database applications for web sites

Q: Do you see yourself foraging into other genres in the future?

A: I’ve always had one foot in the mystery genre, but I really don’t see myself leaving fantasy completely behind anytime soon.

Q: Is there anything else you would like to share with the readers?

A: My big hobby right now is web design. I really enjoy designing websites, working with graphics and CGI applications. I hate using HTML editors and I like to type all my HTML code into a simple text editor. It helps me visualize what I’m doing. You can visit my website at
