Chapter Eighteen

A month later, Melissa packed the last of her clothes into the suitcase and set them by the bedroom door. The ritual was familiar and sad. It was time to head to the airport to be met by a private jet and fly home.

She looked around the room once again, opened the door and walked down the stairs into the corridor.

Jake stood with his cellphone to his ear talking, but also silently directing the workers to take certain pieces of furniture to the loaded van parked outside. Ending the call, he walked toward her.

“Are you finished packing, sweetheart?”

“Yes, the cases are by the door.”

He spoke to one of the men walking by. “Could you bring down my wife’s suitcases? It’s the first room at the top up the stairs.”

The man nodded and moved away.

Melissa wrapped her arms around Jake’s waist and laid her head on his chest.

“I hate to leave.”

“Sweetheart, we’re not leaving Dallas forever. The house is ours. We decided to spend at least a few months a year here. Just for now, L.A. is our main base.”

“I know and we agreed but I never thought I would ever want to live in Dallas again. But my relationship with my parents has changed how I feel.”

He drew her to a deep leather wingback chair positioned near a window overlooking the rose garden and pulled her on his lap. She shot him a surreptitious look as she got comfortable. He groaned. Inwardly, she smiled, knowing he was aroused and there wasn’t anything he could do about it. She should remind him that he was the one that chose to have her sit on his lap.

“I want you to be happy, Melissa. If moving us permanently to Dallas will do it, then so be it. It’ll take time to transport the headquarters but it can be done.”

Silence filled the room.

“You would do that?”

“For you, yes.”

Tears filled her eyes. One escaped and ran down her face.

His eyes filled with concern, he stared at her. “What’s wrong, honey?”

“Nothing is wrong. I was going to wait until we got settled in L.A. But—”

“You’re scaring me. What is it?”

“I’m pregnant…We’re going to have a baby.”

She watched him with bated breath, waiting for the moment when the news finally connected with his brain.

His eyes widened with fear. “What? Are you okay? My God, Melissa, we had sex last night and this morning. It was—”

“Wonderful.” She took his face in her hands. “Baby, we can have sex. It’s not against the rules.”

“Are you sure?” he asked sheepishly.

“Positive.”

“I was a little rough last night. Maybe we should refrain from too much sex until—”

She laughed. “I’m not a fragile piece of glass.”

“Okay. I guess I did get carried away.”

“Are you happy?”

“Ecstatic. I didn’t know it could get any better, but you have made me an extremely happy man.”

She cleared her throat before speaking. Never would she doubt again his love for her. “I want my parents to have an active role in our child’s life.”

“Okay…” he said slowly.

“Jake, I don’t want to leave L.A. Our life is there.”

“Are you sure?” he asked.

“Absolutely. When we’re not in Dallas, they can come to Los Angeles. You taught me to love again, Jake.” She kissed him gently on his lips. “You’ve shown me that loving someone and allowing yourself to be loved makes you stronger.” She smiled. “You even won over my mother, which is a very difficult thing to do. She loves you as much as I do.”

He laughed. “That’s a stretch. Your mother is a hard nut to crack. You never know what she is thinking. But she’s warming up.”

“Well, you have Daddy in your back pocket.”

“That’s because we hold you in the center of our hearts.”

“That’s a sweet thing to say.” She kissed him. He tried to deepen it but she pulled back.

“There is nothing sweet about me.”

She laughed. “I say it is.”

“He grabbed her face and held it still. “I love you more each day.”

To stop from crying with happiness, she placed her head beneath his chin.

“I love you very much, Jake,” she murmured against his chest and then lifted her head to hold his gaze. “My heart belongs to you…only you.

“I know.”

“You believe me now?”

“Yes. You’re my life, Melissa. I love your strength, your fierceness…your laughter. There isn’t anything I don’t love about you. ”

She would never get tired of him saying it. Melissa sighed with happiness. She’d finally found her place in life. She belonged to this man. Little by little he broke down the barriers she had put up for protection and she was glad he did.
