Prologue

I was in deep sadness on my way to the trial.

The hands I held would never ever suit mine. The lips that touched my cheeks don’t make feel weak. The tone of her voice hasn’t knocked me off my feet, and her touch will never ever soften me like a jelly.

The hands that I desired, the lips that I longed to kiss, the voice that would knock me off, the touch that would soften me is now known as a kept woman, a mistress. The woman that I love is in front of a jury, waiting for the verdict.

This happens when husbands betray their spouses.

Our affair bloomed from lust, but eventually, it developed into something which is a way better than attraction. We were destined to have each other.

Chapter 1

In the news

August 26, 2014

“Daniel Adams, a Kentucky tycoon and husband of Gwendoline Brent-Adams who is a daughter of Mayor Jackson and Lady Caroline Brent, was allegedly having an affair with Della Dotson, a house help. Their romance has been on for seventeen months. The mistress was also believed to be part in the Fankfort Bank Spree.  About a month earlier, please watch what both parties have to say.” A TV newscaster announced.

“We apologize, but my client is on strict orders of not discussing the case to anyone. These past few months have been very tough and exhausting for her, and she requested not to include her family into the case. We won’t be discussing about the Frankfort Spree as well, as it is far off the issue. On behalf of Cuffman Law Firm, thank you for the time,” stated Della’s lawyer.

“Hello. As of this moment, all we can say is that time will reveal. We will not be judging unless all facts are brought forward on Monday, which is the start of the hearing. From Dunagan Law Firm, we thank you for your time.” It was Gwendoline’s lawyer who spoke this time.

The camera focused back on the primary newscaster, “You have now heard from both parties, and it seems that they are both confident. Also, just a reminder, that for adultery, there is $75,000 fine up to 10 years of imprisonment.  This is Ivy Duvall, signing off. Goodnight, everyone.

The Trial

“Della Dotson, please come to the stand.” Gwendoline’s lawyer pronounced.

I felt that everyone was watching while I walked to the stand. For them, I am a cheap maid in the day and a whore at night. But, deep inside me, I am more than what they think of. I am just like any other woman, but who would care that I didn’t know that Daniel was married. I placed my hand on the book while I took a deep breath, and vowed, as what I am supposed to do. I was fighting back the tears while I started to answer questions.

“State your name.”

“I am Della Dotson.”

“Alright, Miss Dotson. You started working on July 12, 2013 as a house help at Fankfort Valley Hotel. Is that right?

“Yes.”

“The files that were received from the Fankfort Valley states that you earn $15 hour. That means that you are earning $735 a week for working 7 hours a night. It is not enough to support 2 others.”

Della’s lawyer chimed in, “Objection, your Honor. We have made it a point that our client’s family should not be talked about. “

“Objection denied as it is a supporting evidence. Proceed.” The judge pounded the gavel.

The opposing lawyer continued, “Tell the jury who you are supporting, Ms. Dotson.”

“I am supporting my sister’s children since she and her spouse died.”

“Therefore, you thought that Daniel Adams would be the best person who can help you out.”

“That is not true.”

“Alright, if it isn’t true, then, let us know why you went after him.  Let us know how you knew each other.”

“I started working at the hotel. I worked the night shift and on one night, my manager offered me a great deal for going an extra mile for this client. I brought him extra stuff and all that. And then, Daniel requested I bring him a towel since whoever was working before me wasn’t able to provide him one. Then, when I went to his room, he let me in. He then asked if we could have coffee together. I agreed and then we went.”

My eyes roamed around the hall after I answered that question. I looked at Gwendoline, who was wearing a Chanel dress, and Prada pumps. Her hair was in a slicked back ponytail. She was holding a Gucci bag.  She stared at me, and it seems that she was mocking me with her affluence. I glanced at my family. Their faces were supportive, but they looked humiliated. I turned my gaze to Daniel. His eyes were somewhat speaking to me, asking to forgive him for tugging me into this situation.

“ You said that he asked you to have coffee with him.  Where were the children at that time?”

“They were at my mother’s places as they were getting ready for school”

“So, are you a mistress?”

I was taken aback as I was not ready to answer that question. Yes, I may be one, but I didn’t know that he was married. He didn’t wear a ring, there were no photos, I was not told.

“I view myself as one who didn’t have any idea of his personal life.”

“Judge Fletcher, we have no other questions.”

“Alright, court dismissed.” The pounding of the gavel made me jump.

I walked past Daniel and his wife, and it was terrible. Everyone is beginning to treat me like a filthy woman for something that I was unaware of, and it was miserable.

I arrived home well past 10 o’clock. Plants were thrown everywhere, the windows were smashed, and everything was ruined, and there was big red A on my garage.

Chapter 2

I felt sick when I woke up the next day. When I got up, I found out that I have company. He looked at me with a kind of look that would take my inner thoughts and secrets.  I went to the bathroom to get my robe.

“What brings you here, Daniel? How did you know that I was here?”

Daniel stood there looking at me, “Your mother told me.”

He was about to respond but I still had a lot to say,

“Daniel, you know that you will always be special to me, but I have learned to move on, and you should, as well.”

“ Please understand, Del. You know that I still love you.”

“ I do love you too, with what happened in the past few months, I have grown up.”

“ Yeah, I understand.”

I wanted to grasp him and let him stay with me, but I just can’t. I just watched him leave.

During the Trial

Daniel’s Point of View

Della Lawyer looked directly at me, “Mr. Daniel Adams, please come to the stand.”

I was so frightened while walking up to the stand. I was anxious that I might say the wrong words that would hurt Della.

“Tell us your name.”

“Daniel Adams”

“How long have you been dating defendant?”

“About a year and a half, perhaps.”

“She was not just a fling?”

“If she was just a fling, then I would  not be in this court.”

“ So what is she in your life, if she is not just a fling?”

“I can’t tell. I don’t know.”

“ Of course you know. She was just a fling to you. You found out that she was financially challenged. You exploited her to be unfaithful to your wife, and when you’re done, you will leave her live a life like hell. And your wife is now suing her for your fault.”

“It’s a lie! I love her… I mean, I care about her.”

“Mr. Evans, can you tell me why you stepped out on your better half?”

“Perhaps I was not happy anymore.”

“Perhaps? So you are not sure if you are happy or not? If you have been unfaithful, you must be sad.”

“I wouldn’t know.”

“You need to make it sure. Your honor, that’s all.”

“I’ll give a 10 minute break for Mr. Evans to find an answer. Mr. Evans, please.”

“Okay, Ma’am.”

My lawyer approached me during recess, “Mr. Evans, you need to give her a good reason.”

Gwendoline placed her hand on her hip, “That’s right, Daniel. Do you want to win or lose?”

“ I don’t care! How many times do I have to tell you that I’m not giving this trial a damn? I asked you to forgive me, but the choice to believe me was yours. I know that this is just for publicity, and I care less!”

“You owe me one.”

“I don’t believe I owe you anything, Gwendoline.”

“ But you were unfaithful to me.”

“ I just can’t believe it! You are so impossible!”

The lawyer interrupted, “Wait, I bet you both need to relax. It’s too late for us to back out now. Daniel, you need to give an answer to the questions faster so she will be sentenced right away.”

“ So, how about if I don’t want her to be sentenced?”

“ Like what the lawyer has said, it is too late to back out.  Come on, let’s go.”

Della’s Point of View

“How is it going?”

The lawyer responded, “It’s going good. You have them because of the 2 kids and their mom. I think he is afraid that’s why he didn’t answer the question. Or, maybe his attorney advised him not to, but I think they won’t do that.”

“What are we going to do now?”

“I will return to the trial and have him answer the question. And, please tell let me know if you still have anything else that I need to know.”

“I already have told you everything.”

“Alright.  Things will be difficult in the few months, but you should be strong. I know that these things suck, and it won’t get any better with him coming to the hotel you are in.”

“You know that he went there? How?”

“I have means. I also let people check on what happened to your house.  “

“Thanks for everything, Maribelle.”

“It’s a pleasure. Let’s go.”

Trial

“Counselor, please proceed.” The Judge declared.

“So Mr. Evans, is it just for once, or was this a pattern?”

“This is the first time. I haven’t been unfaithful before.”

“ Did you lack interest on your wife?

“Objection!

“ Why is that, counsel?

“It’s a question of third party, your honor.

“ Article 5043 says that Question of 3
rd
party is allowed if the third party is spouse of the one on stand. Judge?

“That’s correct. Please proceed.

“ Did you lack interest on your wife?”

“No, madam.”

“If that’s the case, why did step out on her?

“I dreamed of an elegant wife, grand house, luxurious cars, and beautiful kids. However, my wife doesn’t know how to cook, she can’t make me grin, but Della does. She makes me laugh, we play video games together. I can do everything without feeling guilty. Shouldn’t it be great that I can both have the cake and eat it as well?”

“Mr. Evans, it is okay for you to have the cake too, but if you are too selfish, then you will have a stomach ache. Judge, that would be all. Thank you.

“Let’s call it a day. We will proceed with the hearing tomorrow at noontime.

Later that night.

“What did you say, eat the cake and have it too?

Gwendoline asked me by the time we were home. I am sick of explaining.  I think it would be better if she just got to bed and not talking to me. Yes, I love her, but I’m not in love with her.  She’s like a boomerang and she will hurt you. As to why we are married, here it goes. I was 18 years old then, and was starting a small business.  It was an online one named The Hype. It was some sort of an audio production site. Her dad was running for mayor at that time, and finds myself promising. So he would get majority of the votes as he was helping me out, while I would get $60,000 and get a physical store. And then, it was not enough. He let me marry his spoiled brat. I agreed, as I was after the money for me to be successful.

“Hey, did you hear what I just said?

“ I do because you are always the one who does all the talking.

“ Goodnight!

“Duke and Della are the only great things that came from this.” He murmured.
