***

On a late November evening in Lecce, three little girls sat chatting and crying in the evening sunshine, as a kind woman told them all about their mother, who had loved them very, very much. She played recordings of her voice, she sprayed her perfume on them so they could smell her again, and she showed them a video of them all laughing, again and again. As often as they wanted her to, until one by one, they fell asleep in her arms.

Fiona would never stop telling them a sanitised version of how Jessie had given up everything, including her own life, to make sure that they would be safe forever. And it wasn’t a lie. It was just a fairy story, to hide the realities of an unjust world that they were far too young to understand.
