“Fine. Will you marry me?”

“Why?”

Irritation whipped through him. “Because I asked.”

He thought he heard her strangle on a laugh.

“That’s not good enough. I thought it might be because you love me.”

He said nothing but kept looking ahead, unseeingly at the traffic passing them by and racing into the Nevada night.

She sighed. “Fine, well, I’ll marry you because I love you, but I am getting sick of your inability to express your feelings outside of the bedroom. Really, why did I get stuck with such a Neanderthal? I need a little nerdy accountant who tells me every day how much he loves me.”

He looked at her then. The moment he saw the amusement in her expression, he felt his temper cool.

“You’d roll right over him.”

She shrugged. “It might be nice to have a little romance in my life. I have had very little of it.”

His heart melted at hearing the yearning beneath her tone. She might project the woman who doesn’t need all the hearts and flowers, but she needed them, deserved them. He’d done a good job at it before now.

“What’s more romantic than a man who chases down his idiot woman when she runs away?”

“First, I didn’t run away. Second, calling her an idiot really ruins it.”

He smiled. “But I did it. You have to admit that no one else has done that.”

Her eyes softened. “You still called me an idiot.”

“If you don’t know how much I love you, you have to be an idiot.”

Her eyes widened. “How am I supposed to know? How do I know?”

He raised his hand to her jaw and cupped it, then rubbed his thumb over her cheek. “Because when I thought I might’ve lost you, I didn’t care about anything else. I could have died there on the spot and been happier than living without you. I might not be the most expressive man... and I am sure I’ll continue to piss you off by being the way I am. But know this, you are all that is good in my world. Until you were mine, I didn’t know what I was looking for, had no idea what I needed. The moment I touched you, it was as if I had come home. You are the first person I want to see in the morning, and the last touch I want at night. I love you.”

Tears had welled in her eyes and were now pouring down her face. “Oh, Micah.”

Without warning, she jumped toward him, clasping his face in her hands and planting her mouth on his. The kiss was sweet and hot. Need, pleasure and love entwined and sped through his blood. Her tongue slid in against his and he started to ease her back onto the seat of the pickup when there was a tap on the window. It took him a second to realize someone was there.

He pulled back and turned to find a Las Vegas policeman standing by the window.

“Is there a problem here, sir?”

Dee giggled as Micah felt his face turn red.

“No, sir. We just got engaged.”

The older gentlemen smiled. “Congratulations. But it isn’t safe to be out here.”

Micah nodded. “I understand.”

“Good luck and buckle up.”

He walked away and Dee collapsed into giggles. “Oh. My. God. That was too funny. We got caught making out on the side of the highway.”

He looked at her, trying to be mad, but at seeing her joy he couldn’t drum up the frown. The woman had been so buttoned down for so long, it was good to see her happy.

He grabbed her and planted a kiss on her mouth and then let her go. Buckle up.”

The lights flashed in the mirror.

“Sure thing.”

He pulled back onto the highway. “We’re going to make record time to the chapel. I plan on getting you into the honeymoon suite and not letting you out for a week.”

She slipped to the middle seat, put on her seatbelt and then snuggled up to him. “I like the sound of that.”

Micah punched the gas and laughed as they sped down the street and onto the rest of their lives.
