“That’s what I want to ask you.”

He shifted so he could hold more of her than her hand. He pulled her over against his chest and put his arm around her. “What?”

“No lies between us. I don’t care what we have to tell the rest of the world. But there can be only truth between us. Understand? You kept your childhood from me as well as a horrible part of your past that could have gotten us both killed. And I kept that night from you. We can’t do that. Ever. Promise me.”

He met her gaze. He’d never loved anyone more than he loved Justine. She was his heart, his soul. He wanted nothing more than to give her everything. Forever. “I promise. And if anything ever happens to you, even if you aren’t certain—”

She leaned over against his bruised chest. It hurt, but he held her to it anyway and ignored the pain. “I promise too.”

Then she moved and kissed his lips. Soft. Wonderful. The world felt right again. When she broke the kiss, she leaned back, met his gaze and grew serious. “How did you come to the conclusion I cheated on you?”

Hell.

He’d just promised to tell the truth always. Should he let go of the biggest secret of his life? Would it be right to tell her after five years of marital bliss that thanks to a bad bout of mono when he was seventeen, he was sterile? That all these years while he let her take her pill day after day, he was merely shooting blanks and couldn’t make a baby even if she missed a day? Should he tell her the baby she carried might very well have red hair or a big nose like Jack Fillbrook unless by some miracle Dan was able to produce a live swimmer?

His brother Dillon had red hair. There was no sense in both of them hurting over this knowledge. Perhaps fate would be kind, and she would never need to know. Keeping another secret couldn’t be that hard. He knew how to do it well.

He looked into her eyes. “I didn’t really come to the conclusion. I wasn’t certain. It was just a feeling by the way you were acting. You confirmed it when you didn’t deny it when we were outside the cabin. I admit I wanted to strangle you.”

“I’m glad you didn’t.”

He grinned at her. “I’m glad too. And if Jack Fillbrook weren’t already dead, I’d kill him. Slowly.”

She rested her head on him again. “I don’t want to ever mention him or hear his name again, okay?”

“Fine by me. Although they’ll give him a hero’s funeral. We’ll have to go and play the part. Think you can do that?” He lost his fingers in her hair. How many times had they lain in bed just like this in the past five years? Hundreds.

“I’ll play the part to get us through this, as long as you’re there holding my hand.”

“I plan to always be here to hold your hand.”

He moved her hair behind her ear. The room was quiet for a moment except for the sounds of the monitors connected to him.

“Are you still mad about the baby?”

With his hand, he cupped her face and drew her up closer once again. “No. I love you, Jus.” He realized he’d do anything for that love.

“I love you too.”

He looked down at her and grinned. “So what color do you want to paint the baby’s room?”
