Nigel Kneale, Alan Garner, Stephen King, Clive Barker, Alan Moore and others planted the seeds, as did the authors who contributed to the many ghost and horror anthologies I devoured as a child â in particular Ronald Chetwynd-Hayes, whose gleefully dark tales I always relished.
