Historically, Tajiks have been overrepresented in Afghanistan’s professional officers (at all but the highest levels) and soldiers since the 1870s, when British intelligence reported that uniformed Afghan regiments with European rifles were recruited from “Kohestanis.” This also reflected the non-enforcement of conscription in several Pushtun provinces during the Golden Age.
