Maybe he was so stressed worrying
about the physical that
he’d
conjured her up in his
mind to take away the fear. She looked so real. And how strange that he’d
imagined her dressed in a doctor’s lab coat and not the
waitress’
outfit. He
hadn’t
realized his mouth was partially
open until he saw a reflection of himself in the shiny metal cabinet on the
opposite wall.

“Hi Alex, I’m Doctor
McQuire
, and I think we met this morning at the café.”

McQuire
.
Now he realized
why she looked familiar. She had similar eyes and jawline to Mike
McQuire
. The two
were probably related
.

“Doctor
McQuire
?
You’re not a waitress?”

She pulled out a stool from under
the desk and sat in front of him. Her hair
was still tied
up but much more neatly and professionally with no loose tendrils. She crossed
her
legs and the lab coat parted showing a black shirt
and very shapely legs, the calf muscles so well defined that he guessed she
worked out a lot.

“I’m Mike
McQuire’s
sister, and I volunteered to help out this morning.”

“So where’s Dr. Jackson?”

“He’s on sabbatical for a few
months and I’m filling in while he’s gone.”

He should have asked, should have
checked before he made the appointment, but how was he to know the doctor who’d
been in this practice longer than Noah had built his ark would be away when he
decided to get checked out. Bottom line was he
didn’t
want any female doctor checking out his bits and pieces, but especially not Dr.
McQuire
who he found downright gorgeous. How awkward
would that get?

“I wasn’t aware he was out of
town. In fact, I think I’ll wait until he comes back.”

Alex stood, suddenly realizing by
the cool breeze around his butt that the robe had fallen away from his ass. He
put his hands behind his back and grabbed it.

“I’m quite capable of giving you
a physical. I mean I have my license. I’ll even let you see it if you want.”

Had he detected sarcasm in her
comment?
Surely
she must hear this sort of thing all
the time. Although he guessed, she was probably fresh out of her residency.

He shook his head. “Nothing
against you, but I prefer a man to check me over.”

She stood. She bit her lip and
then glared at him. “They warned me at medical school that this might happen.”

“What might happen?”

“Some male patients would be chauvinistic
about female doctors.”

“What a minute, that’s not what I
said or what I meant. Ask anyone and
they’ll
tell you
that I’m anything but a chauvinist. I believe in women’s rights.”

“Just not women
doctors examining men?”

“It’s not because I’m biased or
anything like that.”

“Really?
Because it looks like that to me.”

She crossed her arms
like
she was ready to pick a fight with him. She probably
was and who could blame her.
He’d
be pretty pissed if
a woman told him she’d rather wait for a female cop to come along and help her
out or to take her statement. He had to assure her this
wasn’t
about her or her ability to do her job. He was confident that she was a great
physician. The only way he could put her at ease was to be completely honest
about why he
didn’t
want her examining him.

“Would you want some guy checking
out your pussy?”

He swallowed, sensing
he’d
gone red by the familiar creep of warmth now traveling
up his neck and into his jaw line. Damn,
he’d
meant to
say that but not quite as bluntly and definitely not using that sort of slang.
Too late to take it back and now she was looking like steam was about to erupt
from both her ears. She was red in the face, and her lips downturned.

“Believe me; women have their
pussies checked out by male doctors every single day. I have a male gynecologist,
if you must know.”

Lucky
guy
.
He noted how
she’d
also used the slang term too. He’d dug himself into a huge hole here and was
getting
buried in dirt with each stupid thing that slipped
out over his tongue.

“It’s just…”

“Just what?”

He
didn’t
want to tell her that he found her drop-dead gorgeous and as soon as she laid
her hand on him, he was going to get an erection. He had a borderline one right
now.

“Well?”

He swallowed again.
He’d
offended her and he hadn’t meant to.

What was the point?
He’d
have to wait close to two months to see Dr. Jackson.
His mom would get on his case. He
wouldn’t
rest easy.

“Okay, let’s just get this over and
done with as soon as we can,” he finally said.

“Glad to hear you’ve changed your
mind. I’ll make this as quick and painless as I can.”

Alex sat down again. The seat was
now colder than ever on his ass. She perched her glasses on her nose. She
looked intelligent, sexy, and he had to cross his legs to stop himself from
going hard.

She flipped through the forms
he’d
filled in at reception. “Let’s see here, no allergies,
you father died from a heart attack, not sexually active, but you masturbate.”

Shit! Now he wished he
hadn’t
made the joke about jerking off.
Sure
he masturbated on a regular basis, but he didn’t need to tell the doctor about
it.

“My job makes it almost
impossible for me to date,” he quickly added just in case she thought that was
the reason for all the self-pleasuring.

She glanced over at him. “Well,
actually masturbation is great.
It’s
relaxing and you
get to ejaculate. Well, I’m assuming it gets that far and that you’re able to?”

Ground open up and swallow me up.
Alex his face burning. “Definitely gets that far.”

“Great to hear
that.
Your blood
pressure’s
slightly elevated but most
patients are a little tense so that often explains it. I’d like to recheck it
after I’ve given you your physical.”

He nodded. No
doubt
it would be more elevated after she’d touched him.

“Your brother died of testicular
cancer.”

Alex nodded. “Last year.”

“I’m sorry to hear that. Anyone
else in the family have it?”

He shook his head.

“I recommend that you come back
at least once a year to get checked out for it. I’ll make a note for Dr.
Jackson’s nurse to send you an e-mail reminder.”

“Great.”
And next
time I’ll check that he’s here.

“Okay, you want to climb up on
the examining table for me?” she asked pushing her glasses on the top of her
head.

Alex held the sides of the robe together,
but that was next to impossible to do at the same time as getting onto the
table. He slid his butt along the paper and heard it tear. He quickly laid back
and tried to relax as Eva put the stethoscope around her neck and placed it on
his chest. Her
eyelashes which
were long, silky, and
fluttered as she listened.

“Everything sounds good to me.
You want to lean forward so I can listen to your lungs?”

Alex lifted his body up and she
placed the cold metal on his back. “Take some nice relaxing breaths.” He
breathed too deep and almost got lightheaded.

“Great, now if you want to sit
up, scoot your butt on the edge of the table and dangle your legs over the side
here.”

Alex made sure his legs were
together as he moved in one fluent movement. She grinned but
didn’t
comment. He guessed
she’d
still gotten quite the view.
She stood beside him and ran her hands along his collarbone, making his cock go
instantly hard.

She lifted his right arm and
pressed in his armpit. His cock pulsed to a steady beat making him bite his
lip.
Hopefully,
he’d think of something boring and
neutral but all he could focus on was her fingers and hands on his body and the
minty smell on her breath. He wanted to lean over and kiss her, flip her onto
the table, part her legs and…

“No enlarged lymph nodes.
Now if you could stand and lift your robe for me.”

“No.”

“What?”

Shit, that
hadn’t
come out of his mouth quite right.
He’d
sounded like a
spoiled child. He glanced down.
She’d
probably already
seen his erection straining against the lower part of the robe, almost lifting
it away from his body.

“You know on second thought, I
would feel more comfortable with a man checking me out down there.”

“Alex, I don’t want to make you
feel uncomfortable in any way, but let me assure you that I see penises every
day and one starts to look very much like another in my line of work, so I
barely notice them anymore.”

He gripped his toes into the
linoleum, hoping that would take the hard-on away, but it didn’t, and now he
was running out of options and excuses.

“I know you have an erection and
that’s perfectly okay too. Most men get one when I examine them.”

Oh, he bet they did. He bit his
lip again knowing that if she touched his cock and balls, he might do something
really embarrassing
and for that reason he wouldn’t
argue his case anymore. He was getting the hell out of here.

He leaned over and picked up his
cell phone, and like a big baby ran out of the room and down the hallway,
trying to remember which way he’d come in and where his clothes were at.

“Hi.
Sheriff.”

He turned around and saw Al from
the bakery leaving one of the other rooms.
“Thought that
looked like you as you dashed by.”

Alex pulled the robe together
just as Eva headed his way. His cell phone rang.

Literally saved
by the bell.
“Hello, Sheriff Alex Davis speaking,” he said looking straight at Eva and
emphasizing the sheriff bit. This was important business and now he had a legit
reason to leave.

“Alex, have you been examined
yet?”

Shit, it was his mother.

“I…”

“Something tells me you’ve
chickened out.”

“It’s not that, it’s just I’m
waiting to see Dr. Jackson when he returns from his sabbatical.”

“So there’s no doctor there, is
that what you’re telling me?”

“No, it’s just that…”

“What?”

“I prefer male doctors.”
“Alex Davis, haven’t I raised you not to be sexist?”

“You have, Mom. You certainly
have.”

“Is the doctor there?”

Oh,
she’s
there all right

“Yes, but—”

“Give the phone to her because
I’d like to chat with her.”

He
didn’t
put up any protest because he knew this wasn’t going to end well, well at least
not for him.

He handed Eva the phone. “It’s my
mom.”

Dear god that
had sounded like he was back in grade school.

“Hi, Mrs. Davis.
I’m Dr. Eva
McQuire
.”

There were a few minutes of
silence on Eva’s end and he could hear his mom talking but
couldn’t
quite catching was he was telling Eva.

“Yes, yes he is. I understand.
Yes, I pointed that out to him,” said Eva looking him straight in the eye.

His mother’s voice rattled on
again.

“Yes, I can see why you’re
concerned. And yes, this sort of thing can run in families, especially with
siblings.”

His mother was talking yet again
and Eva
didn’t
take her eyes off him as she listened.
“I think that might help. And yes, it was nice speaking with you too.”

She handed the phone back to him.

“Hi, Mom.”

“She sounds lovely and I’m sure
she’ll be gentle. Now it’s a quick procedure and I’ll rest a lot easier when I
know you’ve had it done.”

The women had won. He had no
alternative but to let Eva examine the family jewels.

“Okay. Yes,
I’m
going back into the room with her right now. Bye, Mom.”

Alex
didn’t
say anything but followed Eva back to the room. He stepped inside. She closed
the door and
didn’t
say anything as she washed her
hands and slipped on some latex gloves.
