Chapter One

Staring
out the window at his next door neighbor, Adam cringed. His buddies had already left for Morty’s Pub, needing a break from a week of twelve hour days to finish building another house. He was the only licensed carpenter among them, though they all put in the same effort. Instead of spending his Friday night with them, he’d chosen to lounge in nothing but boxer briefs, and pine over the woman of his desires, but not his reality. Not because one of his parents came from a planet many light years away—a part of his life that he kept secret from everyone. Neither did their eight-year difference in age weigh into his decision to stay away from her.

No,
Sera’s husband had died about a year ago and she’d refused to start dating again, saying her kids didn’t want a replacement for their father.

Adam longed for a way to
convince her to take a chance on him. Her children, Melody and Zach, clung to him every time he offered to take them swimming in the lake, or treated them to ice cream from the convenience store up the road, or any other time they spotted him outside.

He adored them.

Sure, Sera needed time to grieve. He understood that, but his mental comprehension didn’t stop his dick from stiffening every time he had her in his sight. No woman had left his body humming with one simple glance in her direction. Except Sera.

He yearned to
read her thoughts, sense more than her emotions. Her sadness and grief he empathized with, but nothing explained the confusion he sensed around her. In the few moments alone he’d had with her, she always changed the subject when asked if she’d considered dating again. Sure, she trusted him with her kids, but that trust didn’t extend enough to open up to him. She remained a mystery, one he desperately wanted to solve.

Adam groaned, grabbing
a shirt.
I’m going out.
He’d been through all of this before. No point waiting forever for her to change her mind. So what if his dad said his ability to read her emotions pointed to Sera as his soul mate. She’d probably never view him as anything more than a handy sitter.

P
ulling on a pair of jeans, he considered a trip to the local pub. The same women always frequented the place, but at least he’d be guaranteed some action. His fist, and fantasies of the woman next door, no longer brought him much satisfaction. He craved the real thing.

Not
going to happen.

After a quick
spray of cologne, he peeked out his window one last time. And froze. His neighbor stood naked on the dock, her luscious body glowing in the moonlight. That image ingrained in his mind, his cock stiffened. Screw going to the bar. He either finished the job based on the recent sighting, or acted fast to get even closer to her.

No harm in trying.
He rushed down the stairs.

A settlement. That’s all the company had to offer.
More fucking money
. Though none of it would bring Rob back.

They were supposed to be happy together, enjoying their lottery winnings in their dream home. But all of their dreams crumbled into one horrible nightmare.
An electrician by trade, her husband had his own company and bid on tenders for work at factories and other businesses in the area. After they’d won ten million dollars, he’d agreed to take a few years off and spend more time with her and their children. On the day they were set to move into their newly-built fantasy home, Sera received a phone call that changed her life. Her husband had been killed on the job.

Sera
wiped away the tears. She’d shed enough of them already. Anger consumed her, aimed at the factory that contracted her husband for allowing a faulty forklift on the floor, at Rob for taking that one last job, working one more day, and at herself, for allowing his memory to slowly slip away. She didn’t want to lose him, let him disappear from her life, but her kids and the small collection of pictures of him remained her sole connection to him. Although he’d done all of the electrical work in her current home, she’d never lived there with Rob. All of her memories with him happened at their previous house.

H
e’d been so busy those last few months, driving between his local jobs and their future quarters.
We’ll have all the time in the world together once we move
, he’d promised. But he didn’t make it, killed on his last day of work, changing fuses in an electrical panel. An easy task, something he’d done many times. The forklift driver hadn’t noticed him until the last second.

Not enough time to stop with brakes that don’t work.

Over the past year, she'd struggled not to break down each and every day, hiding her heartbreak from Melody and Zach. But, at night she lost control, sobbing and yearning to have Rob beside her again, making love to her, holding her.

She used to be able to imagine
all of that. Not anymore. Instead, the man next door invaded her fantasies. A man too young for her to be thinking about in such a way. Stomach rolling in shame, she closed her eyes. Sure, Adam treated her children as his kin and had incredible patience with them for someone without any of his own. But everything else about him was so wrong.

Sera
stood, extending her taut muscles. She’d waited all day to hear from her lawyer, only to wind up disappointed. The company had offered their money, and expected her to go away. They didn’t care they’d ruined her life.

A
cross the lake, the sun dipped below the horizon, spreading long, red tentacles over the surface of the water. They reached for her, called her into the dark depths.

A quick dip wouldn’t hurt.
Anything to help clear her mind, let her find the sense of peace she’d yearned for since Rob’s death.

She
gazed over her shoulder at the cottage. The kids had already fallen asleep before she’d come out. And no lights remained on in the house next door, or the loft above the garage. Everyone had gone to bed, or at least settled for the night. No one to see her.

Fingering the hem of her shirt, she pulled it over her head
and tossed it on the beach. She stepped out of her shorts, then removed her bra and panties, enjoying the quiet moment of freedom. Fate may have stolen her husband from her, but it would not take away times like that when she could be herself. She wasn’t Rob’s widow, or mother to Zach and Melody. Right then, she was just Sera.

Stretching out
her fingers and toes, she stood at the end of the dock. A warm, gentle breeze nudged her forward and she jumped.

Plummeting
into the frigid water, Sara tensed, her skin breaking out in goose bumps. Instead of gliding, she pushed off the silt-covered bottom and broke the surface, gasping for air.

“Holy shit, that’s cold.”
She wiped droplets from her face.
Why the hell did I think that was a good idea? Next time I’ll dip my foot in before taking the plunge.
Sure, she’d temporarily forgotten her grief, but at the expense of her body temperature and pride.
Total epic fail.

Rushing
over to the dock, she placed her hands on the first plank and hopped up. She rubbed her arms, hoping the warm air would dry her off fast. Her teeth chattered so hard, her jaw ached. After gathering her clothes, she raced for her house, craving a cozy blanket.

A
hot body would be better.

“Need a towel?”

Sera shrieked and jerked to a halt.
Oh, hell.
Everyone was supposed to be sleeping. She squeezed her eyes shut, hoping she’d imagined the voice. Opening them again, she took a quick look to her left.

Adam. Great!
The last person she wanted to be anywhere near before bed. While naked. She held her clothes across her breasts and groin to cover them from his view. How much had he already seen? Obviously enough.
God, why can’t this be a dream?
Yet, a fantasy about the man next door wouldn’t leave her shivering. Just sweaty.

“Adam, what are you doing out here? I thought I was alone.”
Don’t ever assume again.

He stared at her, his blue eyes sparkling in the dimin
ishing light, filling her with sudden warmth.

“I came to offer you a towel. To dry off. I noticed you didn’t have one when you jumped in.”

He’d spied on her the entire time? He’d definitely seen her naked, then. Watched her splashing around in the lake. She stepped away, needing distance.

“Watch out!”

Her feet slipped out from under her, and flying backward, she fell in the water, landing on her ass in a pile of seaweed and sand. The clothes she clutched sank to the murky bottom.

Adam
strode over and scooped her up before she had the chance to object. After setting her on the shore, he wrapped a towel around her, holding her close. Too close. His musky cologne tingled in her nose. Bundled in the towel, she sneezed, unable to cover her mouth in time, spitting all over his shirt.

“Oh, God, I’m so sorry.” Though the sudden space between them gave her the breathing room she
wanted.

He wiped the front of his shirt. “I guess you’re allergic to me.”

“No, it’s just your cologne.” Just like meat, cologne shouldn’t come in a can.

His face paled. “It’s gone. I’ll never wear
this stuff again.”

How sweet.
What he wore didn’t matter. She wanted to get inside and wash away the grit and sand crusting on her body. “Thank you for the towel. I’ll return it tomorrow.”

“No need. You can keep it.”

The teenage girl inside of her wanted to hold onto the towel forever, while the grouchy old widow told her to throw it back at him and skedaddle.

“Thank you.” She crept to her house, need
ing to escape the awkwardness, dreading him following her. Like she needed any more fodder for her already wicked fantasies.

Racing the last few feet, she dashed
onto the covered porch, letting the screen door bang behind her. He made her want to be with a man again. He made her want
him
.

Before
entering the house, she shed the towel, giving it a quick shake to get rid of any dirt. In the bathroom, she twisted on the shower taps until steam billowed from the glass stall, although Adam had already taken away her chill the moment he held her. So close to him, pressed to his hard body. Those thick arms. His full, tempting lips.
Oh, to have kissed him... No! He’s off limits.

Not trusting
what her erotic thoughts of her neighbor might lead to, she cut the shower short, slamming down the faucet and drying off. She crawled into bed, pulling a picture of Rob from the nightstand drawer. With a body pillow tucked under the sheet, she tried to imagine cuddling with her late husband. But every time she closed her eyes, Adam intruded instead.

Why can’t I
picture Rob?
She wasn’t ready to date again, still hoping to wake one morning with him beside her, find out the accident had been a bad dream.

Yet
after what occurred with Adam, she had a hard time banishing the man next door from her thoughts.
What if I had invited him inside?

No! Stop it
.
She scooted out of bed, needing to flush away all thoughts of her neighbor. Other than being courteous by offering a towel, he hadn’t made any type of pass. She’d read too much into his actions.
Wishful thinking.

Maybe
it’d been a sign to consider dating again. Rob would never return to her. Time to find comfort, and possibly love, for a second time. But she had to quit looking for the attention she craved next door. She needed a man her own age, one who already had his life established, settled down.

Slipping out to the porch
, she grabbed the towel Adam had lent her.
Gotta wash this tomorrow and give it back to him. I don’t need a reminder of him lying around.
She caught a whiff of his cologne on the material. Where the scent had bothered her earlier, this time it left her craving another warm body in bed all the more.

Time to stop
turning men down when they asked her out. She was on the market again, done with giving the cold shoulder.

T
onight, in her fantasies, she belonged to her neighbor. Raising the towel to her face, she breathed in, letting the same warmth from his arms fill her again. With an aching need between her legs, she returned to her room. She lay on the bed, placing the towel beside her. Spreading her legs, she began the seductive sweep of her fingers, picturing Adam between them, teasing, licking, sucking…. Arousal skyrocketed at the mental image of him gazing at her from below. The tormented pleasure she’d denied herself over the past year left her head spinning.

With a
shriek, she detonated, the orgasm shooting through her. “Adam,” she cried, thrusting her hips in the air. The rolling waves continued and she shuddered, gasping for air. God, it had been so long since she’d had that kind of release.
