“So,
I
swu
ng by your house to see if you
had written
down the Algebra assignment
,
and your dad was just getting off the phone with the hospital.
I
thought
I
’d stop by
to try to
cheer you up
,
but it looks like someone beat
me
to it.”
Honorio stood with a blank face
,
and
moved
behind the chair
in which
he
had sat
before
.
“
I
’m glad you’re here Mark
,
”
Jasmine said, “More than you know.”
He handed
her
the flowers
.
S
he
smelled them
,
then
beamed as best
she
could in her state.
“
I
’m so
rry to hear about your accident,
”
Mark said.
“Accident?”
s
he
glanced at Honorio.
“Yeah.
Too bad about your car,
”
Mark continued.
“
My
car?
What about
my
car?”
She
turned back to Mark as h
er
heart monitor started
beeping faster.
H
e
opened his mouth
to answer
as
her
dad rushed in the
room, slightly out of breath
.
“
Jasmine
, are you okay?”
her d
ad asked
.
“
I
’m fine
,
dad.”
He looked around
,
and spotted Honorio.
Dad
frowned
,
and stood up straight.
“You may leave.”
“Yes, sir.” He left the room immediately.
She
was confused.
Honorio was
her
dad’s golden boy.
Why was he getting the cold shoulder
,
and kicked out?
She
turned to Mark.
“Thank you for coming by Mark.
The flowers are beautiful.”
“No problem.
I
hope you get better soon.”
Her
dad clapped Mark on the shoulder.
“Mark, you are welcome any time.”
Mark looked uncomfortable.
“I can’t stay long, I gotta go. I’ll see you at school?”
Jasmine felt like he was being ripped away from her. “So soon?”
“I ... told my mom I would be back five minutes ago... Get better soon, okay?” With that, Mark left.
Dad sat in the seat Honorio
had
vacated
,
and pulled it a little closer to the bed.
“How are you feeling?” h
e asked
her
.
“Uh, like
I
was hit by a truck.”
“You were very lucky that you weren’t hit by a truck.
What were you thinking
Jasmine
?”
She
didn’t know what he was talking about.
Honorio ha
dn’t
had
time to
tell
her
the cover story
,
so
she
had no clue how to respond.
“
I
don’t know,
”
she
muttered lamely.
Dad sighed.
His shoulders drooped.
For the first time in years, he dropped the wall between
them
.
“When the hospital called and told
me
you were in an accident, the first thought
I
had was that
I
had lost you
,
too.”
He choked up slightly.
After clearing his throat
,
he opened his mouth to speak again
,
but closed it when a nurse walked in.
She fiddled with the
tubes
and dials then smiled at
her
.
“
I
upped your morphine slightly
to help you sleep.”
After she left,
her
dad continued.
“
My
main concern is your safety.
I
don’t want you spending time with Honorio anymore.
That boy is bad news.”
“Dad
...
!
”
S
he
tried to interject.
It was a feeble attempt as the morphine and trauma of the night
had
started to catch up to
her
.
“No buts
,
Jasmine
.
I
’m serious.”
“Dad,
I
’m really tired.
Can
we
discuss this more later?”
She heard how her words slur
red
.
He
r dad watched her for a minute.
“Sure.
Get some sleep.”
He turned off the light over
her
head
,
and
she
shifted slightly to a more comfortable position.
As
she
faded to black,
she
heard Yumi talking.
Jasmine
, Honorio debriefed us.
He said you don’t know your cover story.
Listen carefully.
Yumi,
I
’m drugged up.
I
can’t concentrate.
Jasmine
, you need to know what everyone thinks happened.
We also need to talk.
I
can’t.
No
...
she
trailed off at the end of the sentence.
Jasmine
!
Yumi
yelled in
her
head, popping
her
semi-awake again.
Wha
...
?
Are you alive?
Yes, but the nurse gave
me
morphine.
I
have to sleep.
I
’ll talk to you tomorrow.
Please talk to
me
as soon as you wake.
It is important.
Night
...
Sleep well, Jasmine. We’ll fix everything after you’re well.
