“You're beautiful,” Barry whispered, and the words filled Mikki with warmth. He stroked her neck. “So beautiful.”
Mikki reached for Barry's face, and he turned his mouth into her palm. “Make love to me,” she told him. “If you can get this dress off of me,” she added, and then began to laugh.
“There
is
a lot of dress,” Barry said, moving his hands to the heaps of organza and netting. He lifted and pushed, lifted and pushed, trying to get to her legs underneath. Finally, he succeeded, and Mikki felt his warm hands caress her thighs.
Then his head disappeared beneath the plentiful skirt, and Mikki giggled again—until she felt his lips kiss her through her panty.
“You're wearing another thong.” He pushed the material aside and stroked her with his fingers. “Damn.”
Mikki moaned. And then she frowned. “This won't do. I want to see your face, Barry.”
He extricated himself from her skirt and looked at her. “You want to see my face?”
“When you . . . when you go down on me.”
A grin tugged on his lips. “Then let's get you out of this dress.”
Barry reached for her hand, helped her to her feet, and then worked the dress down her hips so that she was able to step out of it. Then he pulled her against him, her back to his front. One hand cupped her center while the other covered one of her breasts.
Mikki gasped in pleasure. Barry kissed her cheek, and she angled her head backward as his lips sought hers. The tips of their tongues playing over each other's, Barry's hand slipped into her panty. He stroked her clitoris and fondled all of her vagina until she was breathing heavily and already feeling like she could come.
“You feel amazing,” Barry rasped. “I can't get enough of you.”
In a flash, he whirled her around. And then he was guiding her back down onto the bed and burying his face between her thighs.
The feeling was exquisite. His tongue tantalized. His teeth grazed her sensitive nub, leaving her breathless. But when his lips covered her as he suckled her so damn sweetly, Mikki came, and came hard.
“Barry, oh my God . . . I . . .”
Her voice trailed off, the words she'd been about to say startling her.
Because she'd been about to whisper,
I love you.
Chapter 14
The next morning, Mikki woke up wrapped in Barry's arms. She felt warm and safe. Content.
“Are you awake?” Barry whispered into her ear.
Mikki rolled over and planted a kiss on Barry's cheek. “Yeah, I'm awake.” She'd been awake for at least ten minutes, her mind replaying every wonderful moment of the previous night. “I'm awake and ready for round two.”
“Is that so?”
“Uh-huh.” Mikki kissed his lips this time, nice and slow as if to wake him into an erect state.
“You're insatiable, you know that?”
“You've brought out a part of me I didn't even know existed,” Mikki admitted sheepishly. “And I'm liking it. A lot.”
Mikki took Barry's penis into her hand and began to stroke him until he was erect. “Yes,” she purred. “This is exactly how I want you.”
“You touch me, and I'm powerless to resist you.”
“Music to my ears.” She kissed his cheek, then nibbled on his earlobe.
And when Barry groaned, Mikki climbed on top of him. She grinned down at him as she positioned her body over his and guided his penis into her.
“Oh yeah,” Mikki rasped, Barry filling her so completely.
Barry covered both of her breasts with his palms, tweaking her nipples at the same time. She stared down at him, at the expression of raw desire on his face, and felt a surge of power.
She began to move against him, slowly at first, but increasingly getting faster. Barry urged his hips upward, matching her movements, pushing his cock deep inside of her.
Soon, their rhythm was fast, frantic, Mikki grinding her body against Barry's, the most delicious sensations washing over her.
“I'm almost there, Barry,” Mikki said. “Come with me.”
Barry's hands went to her hips, and he held her as he thrust into her. Then Mikki brought her face down to his, kissing him as fire consumed them both.
Barry wrapped his arms around her, and they moved like that, their lips entwined as they continued to make love. Mikki's breathing became more ragged, and Barry's did too.
And when Mikki's orgasm began, she felt Barry's begin too. It was as if hers had triggered his. They kissed deeply, moaning into each other's mouth as orgasms claimed them both at the same time.
Hours later, after two more rounds of making love, Mikki said to Barry, “I'd better go. My family's going to be wondering where I am.”
Barry snaked his arm around her, holding her tightly against him. “I don't want you to go.”
“I know. But I'll come back later. Because I'm enjoying every bit of whatever it is that we're doing.”
At her statement, Barry held her eyes. “What
are
we doing?”
Mikki stroked his nose. “We're having an incredible time together.”
“Obviously,” Barry said. “But what comes next?”
Mikki looked at him. “What do you mean?”
“I'm talking about us. Our relationship.”
“Our relationship?” Mikki echoed.
“I'm single, you're single, and there is no doubt that we've got amazing chemistry.”
Mikki's heart began to pound in her chest. Suddenly, she felt anxious. Barry's question was making things more real. Up until this point, she had been enjoying spending time with him. Enjoying their hot and heavy affair.
But wasn't that all this was—an affair? Wouldn't it be disastrous to try and make a relationship out of a sexual fling?
“I don't know,” she said honestly.
“I was hoping we could continue to see each other.” Barry gave her a hopeful look.
“Honestly, Barry, I haven't thought past the here and now. Which has been incredible.”
“Exactly. So why should it end now?”
“Are you asking me to commit?”
“What if I am?”
“I . . . I don't know. What we shared has been fantastic. But commitment? I'm not sure I'm ready for that.”
Barry looked disappointed but said nothing.
“I mean, just because we've connected in bed doesn't mean—”
“Maybe it does. Maybe this can be the start of something else.”
Mikki was silent for a moment, unsure what to say. And when her cell phone rang, she was secretly glad. Because she didn't want to have a talk about the future. Not when she was still confused.
“Excuse me,” Mikki said, and rolled off the bed. Naked, she scurried to her purse and quickly retrieved her phone.
Alex's number was flashing on her screen.
Her stomach tightened. But she didn't answer it.
“Who is it?” Barry asked.
“Um . . .” Well, this was awkward. She was in bed with someone else, and her ex-boyfriend was calling.
Barry sat up. “Mikki?”
“It's . . . it's Alex,” she told him.
Barry said nothing, and thankfully the phone stopped ringing.
But a moment later, her cell phone trilled, indicating that she had a text message.
Mikki pressed the button to open the message, and she read the words: Babe, call me. We need to talk.
“Alex again,” Barry said, not a question.
“Yeah,” Mikki said softly. She put her phone back into her purse and went back to the bed.
“Let me guess. He realizes he made a mistake by dumping you and wants another chance.”
“I don't know. He said he wants to talk.”
“You gonna call him back?”
“I don't know what I'm going to do,” Mikki said, and then blew out a huff of air.
“Wow,” Barry said, his disappointment unmistakable.
Mikki closed her eyes. This wasn't easy. She felt something for Barry; she couldn't deny it. But what was she feeling exactly? Yes, last night the thought that she loved him had come into her mind, but did she really? Or had she simply created artificial feelings for him based on the fact that she was trying to get over Alex?
She had to admit that her stomach knotted at the mention of Alex, at the fact that he had called her. But did that mean she still had feelings for him?
Yesterday, when her sister and Ken had been taking pictures, Mikki had told her mother about Alex's betrayal because she'd asked if she had spoken to him. Her mother had told Mikki that she should forgive him, that she should try to work things out if possible. That everything she knew about Alex said he was a good man, had a great career, and some things were more important than fidelity. Her mother had closed her argument by saying that infidelity didn't have to be a deal breaker.
Given the fact that her mother had forgiven her father, Mikki wasn't surprised that that had been her stance. But at the time, Mikki hadn't even considered the suggestion, in part because she was angry with Alex, and also because she believed he would never call her after what he'd done.
Now, the impossible had happened. Alex had called. He wanted to talk.
Clearly, Alex was having second thoughts. And on the heels of Mikki's conversation with Barry, one where he was making it clear that he wanted more out of their relationship . . . well, she was suddenly more confused than ever.
“I'm not saying I want to talk to him or that I want to work things out with him,” Mikki began. “I guess . . . what happened between us happened so fast. One minute Alex dumped me and I was hurting, and then the next minute you came along . . . and it's been fun . . .”
“Fun?”
“Yes, fun,” Mikki responded, a little irritated. “Look, Barry. I like you. I always have. We were always friends. And now we ended up in bed together, and I don't know what that means. And heck, you're in Chicago. I'm in New York. How would we make it work?”
“We'd find a way.”
“I need time.”
“I leave tomorrow.”
Mikki's eyes flew to his. “You do? When?”
“My flight's at three.” He paused briefly. “I head back to Chicago.”
“But what about Christmas? Your family's all here. I thought—”
“Not everyone,” Barry explained. “I told you my sister just had a baby a few weeks ago, so she didn't want to fly—which is why she didn't come to the wedding. She's in Chicago too, and my parents are heading there. It's the one time of the year they enjoy seeing the snow. Plus, with their second grandson to meet, there's no way they'd be staying in Florida.”
Barry's eyes searched hers, and Mikki knew he was trying to determine how this news was affecting her.
She hadn't expected their time together to end so soon, but she couldn't give him what he wanted. Not yet. Not until she knew what she wanted.
Rising from the bed, Mikki went to the chair where her clothes were and slipped into her thong. She hated that she had to wear her maid-of-honor dress out of the hotel, but she didn't have a choice.
“So you're just leaving,” Barry said.
“We'll stay in touch,” Mikki told him, hoping that didn't sound lame.
Barry chuckled softly, but the sound held no mirth. “Right.”
“Barry . . . I don't know what you expect me to say. Every guy I've dated has been the wrong one. Every guy has hurt me. I thought Alex was going to propose, but instead he dumps me and I find out that he was cheating on me. I don't know that I can trust what I'm feeling.”
Barry was silent as she put her clothes on, though she could read the disappointment in his eyes.
“I was in a relationship with someone for nearly two years,” Mikki went on. “My mother, my sister, they both think I'm stupid to not try and work it out. Maybe they're right. Maybe I owe it to Alex to at least hear him out.”
“Unbelievable.”
“I didn't say I
want
to work it out.” Mikki put her bra on. “All I know is that I don't want to lead you on. And I don't want to make a mistake. Everything's great now, but . . .” Her voice trailed off.
Barry didn't say a word as Mikki continued to get dressed, and while she didn't look at him, she felt his eyes on her.
It wasn't reasonable for him to expect her to sail off into the sunset with him. Her affair with him had begun as a way to mend her broken heart. That was why she'd been all over him at the bar in New York—not because she was planning on having a future with him.
“I'll catch a taxi,” Mikki said, since Barry hadn't gotten out of bed.
“If you really want to leave, I'll take you home.”
“No. It's okay. I'll get home on my own.”
Crossing the room, Mikki gathered her shoes. And that's when Barry got off the bed. Naked, he walked toward her.
Mikki's heart ached as she looked at him. Leaving him like this didn't feel good.
Barry stopped in front of her but didn't touch her. “Remember when we talked about high school, about the one girl I loved who broke my heart?”
Mikki nodded. “Yeah. Tiffany.”
“You assumed I was talking about Tiffany, but I wasn't. I was talking about you.”
Mikki stared at Barry, not understanding. “But you . . . you were always into Tiffany.”
“That's what I told you, because I was scared to tell you how I really felt. And you were in love with Chad. I didn't think telling you the truth would make a difference. But mostly, I was scared that if I told you how I felt about you, you would run. Kind of like you're doing now.”
And with those parting words, Barry headed into the bathroom, leaving Mikki speechless.
