“She’s not here, Jason.”
I spin around, and see Cassandra standing in the doorway to Lacy’s bedroom.
“Where is she?” I ask, pushing past Cassandra to search the en suite bathroom.
I notice Lacy’s clothes are packed up in suitcases, and the sight makes me freeze.
“Cassandra…”
“I’m not going to tell you where she is,” she replies, zipping up the bags. “But I will tell you that she’s safe, and very soon, she will be exactly where she should be, without you or her family to hurt her.”
“You’re taking her back to Cape Town?” I sound panicked, and rightfully so. I’m losing Lacy. Again.
“When you’re ready to be the man she needs, give me a call. Until then, you need to sort your shit out. I’m actually kind of rooting for you, Jason, fuck knows why, after the crap you pulled on Lacy earlier.”
“I found out the truth,” I tell her quickly, like it will change her mind and make her tell me where I can find Lacy. “I know it wasn’t Lacy who leaked that story, I know - ”
Cassandra lifts her hand and cuts me off. “It doesn’t matter now. Lacy needs time to get over this. Your wife did a real number on her earlier today and then you barged in hurling accusations. Forgive me if I don’t like you enough right now to let you see her.”
“You are not her keeper,” I snap, agitated. She’s testing my fucking patience. “You can’t tell me whether or not I can see her!”
“No, but I’m the only one who gives a fuck about her right now! Her family are calling non-stop because she has yet again ‘ashamed them’, fucking assholes, and then you accuse her of something you know she would never do! So fuck you very much Jason Tate, but you’ve done a shitty job of making my best friend believe you really still love her.”
“But I do, Goddamit, I do! Please, Cass, just tell me where I can find her so I can fix it.”
I’m begging, and I don’t care how ridiculous it sounds.
“I will let you know when we land in Cape Town, just so that you know she’s safe, but after that, you’re on your own. Lacy needs time, and you need to give it to her. When she’s ready, she will find a way to tell you.”
Cassandra picks up the suitcases, and takes them to the door. A man in a tailored black suit appears and takes them from her hands. She turns around, and with a sad smile, says, “Goodbye Jason.”
And then she’s gone.
I try Lacy’s cell, and when I get voicemail, I leave her a message. I apologize over and over again, and tell her how much I love her.
“I know I said I’ll wait until you’re ready, but I can’t. I can’t lose you again, Lace. Let me come to you, please.”
I click end and then call my head of security.
“What can I do for you Mr. Tate?”
“Get the jet ready as soon as you can,” I reply. “I’m going to Cape Town.”
