What did rich men like? What did they like to do with women they’d paid a lot of money to? Were they kind to them? Were they nasty? Were they cruel?

She was too hot. That was the problem. She got out of the bed and took off her thin, cotton nightdress. She ran the cold water in the bath. She got in and let it flow over her body. Then she dried off and went back into the living room. She lay naked on the sofa bed. No one was awake. The house was completely silent. All too soon, Shirley’s little baby would be crying but for now, everything was as still as a ghost house.

Lucy closed her eyes and without consciously deciding on it, she pictured Holden’s face. He had a manly, rugged face, the face of a man who worked with his hands. He was a man who knew what hard work was. Everything about him told her that. The muscles in his neck and shoulders, the strength in his hands, the power in his limbs, all of it was evident to her just from what she’d seen of him. He and Jimmy, both of them were strong, hard-working men. They were good men. They were nice to her. They were nice to each other. They were nice to everyone they came into contact with.

Somehow, between them, they managed to change the entire atmosphere of the diner when they entered it. No matter how stressful a day she was having, no matter how many rude customers she had to serve, when they entered the diner it was as if all of that stress was forgotten. It wasn’t just her who was affected by them either, all the women at the diner felt it. Any one of them would have killed for a chance to go out with a guy like Holden or Jimmy.

Anyone of them except Lucy. Lucy was different. She had bigger things to worry about. She couldn’t afford the luxury of dating an easygoing, friendly guy like Holden. She couldn’t afford to spend her days happily hanging out with such a relaxed guy. Her family was in a desperate position. They’d lost their home. Her father was losing his business. Both her parents would soon lose their health. She needed to find a man who could provide her with enough financial security to look after all of those things. She needed what she’d found, an arrangement with a rich man like Jefferson Lund.

But as she lay there in the heat of the summer night, naked on the bed, the entire house, the entire neighborhood as silent as a graveyard, she allowed herself to picture Holden’s face, his strong arms, his muscular torso and abdomen. She imagined what it would be like to be wrapped up in his arms and held against his chest.

She touched herself, her inner thighs. She sighed. She’d always pictured herself having a happy life, a safe, stable life with a good man. She let her fingers move gently over the skin of her thighs, touching them so lightly that it almost tickled her. Her fingers moved closer and closer to her vagina. First she touched the lips, the sensation welling up in her pussy, making her wet with anticipation. She pictured Holden’s face. She imagined what it would be like to take a hold of his firm, manly cock. She wet her fingers in her mouth and then let them press against the lips of her vagina. She felt the sensation rush up from the depth of her body, rushing forth to meet her fingertips.

“Holden,” she whispered. As she did she slid a finger deep inside the mouth of her wet pussy. “Holden,” she whispered again. She moved her hand in and out, in and out, faster and faster. The sensation was delicious. She was starved for sexual stimulation. She hadn’t been with a man in so long, not since they’d moved to this new neighborhood and her high school sweetheart had broken up with her. She pictured Holden’s rugged face, his stubble, his piercing eyes, every detail, and as she did she began to reach the edge of climax. She felt it coming from deep inside her, the pleasure of the orgasm flowing out from her core and through her body like an electric shock of satisfaction. The orgasm rushed to her vagina, pulsing through the flesh of her body. She gasped for air. She arched her back. She stretched out her legs and flexed her toes in pleasure. She was orgasming. It felt so good she wanted to cry out but she couldn’t. She had to remain silent. She was panting by the time she’d finished climaxing.

When she was done she rolled over onto her side and pulled the blanket up over her naked body. She didn’t care that she’d wet the sheets.

H
OLDEN AND JIMMY WERE HEADED
for a fancy night club on Hudson Street. They were in Soho, an area with crazy nightlife and a lot of bars and clubs. Jimmy wanted to get a cab but Holden had insisted on driving the J10. They pulled up outside the club and immediately the bouncer told them they couldn’t park there. Holden looked at the entrance to the club. There was a line of hundreds of people waiting to get in. It was ridiculous.

“You’re going to have to move along, fellas,” the bouncer said. “No one parks here.”

Jimmy looked at Holden questioningly.

“What?” Holden said.

“You know how this works,” Jimmy said. “You haven’t been out of the game for that long.”

Holden sighed. He’d filled his wallet with cash back at the office. He opened it now and handed the bouncer a hundred dollar bill.

The bouncer looked at it and nodded. “Another one of these and you can skip the line.”

Holden gave him another bill and the bouncer escorted them into the club past the long line. Some of the people near the front of the line protested but when the other bouncers approached them they quietened down pretty quickly.

Inside, the music was so loud that it was impossible to talk. Strobe lights flashed incessantly. Holden followed Jimmy through the thick crowd on the dance floor and up a small flight of steps to a VIP area overlooking the entire club. There was a red rope on a pole blocking access to the VIP area and a girl dressed like a stripper was standing by it.

“You boys want table service?”

“Yes we do,” Jimmy said.

They had to shout to be heard. The girl looked them both over. They were dressed in the finest, most expensive suits money could buy and she knew it. She leaned close to their ears. “Follow me, boys,” she said. She took them both by the hand and led them toward an available table.

Holden allowed himself to be led by the girl. She looked good. There was no question about that. He wondered where clubs like this kept finding fresh girls to do these sorts of jobs.

When they got to their table Holden slipped her a hundred dollar bill too. This sort of money meant nothing to him. In the grand scheme of things he could have spent the rest of his life handing out hundred dollar bills to every single person he passed and he still wouldn’t have come close to spending even one percent of his total wealth. But there was something about places like this, environments like this, that had always made him feel faintly ridiculous. It was as if men who had money but nothing else came to these sorts of places to prove to themselves that they still had it. Holden had spent his fair share of time, and money, in places like this when he was younger, but he had always gotten a bigger thrill out of getting women without having to flash so much cash. He knew only too well that the oldest, ugliest, filthiest men could get naked women to drape themselves all over them in a place like this if they flashed enough cash.

As soon as they sat down two girls came over to their table. They weren’t dressed like the hostess who’d brought them to the table. They were dressed like ordinary patrons of the club but Holden knew exactly who they were and what they wanted. They were attracted to the fancy suits and easy flowing cash like hyenas. They were both wearing skimpy black dresses and stiletto heels that were almost too high to walk on.

“Would you boys mind if we joined you?” one of them said.

Holden knew he had to pretend to be having a good time, more for Jimmy’s sake than his own, and he smiled at them. The girls sat right next to them, almost on their laps they were so close. Jimmy looked at Holden. Holden nodded back at him, trying to reassure him that he was having a good time.

A waitress, dressed in what was basically just a thong and bra, came over with an ice bucket. In the bucket was a bottle of Cristal champagne. The club was probably charging a thousand dollars a bottle, but it wasn’t really the champagne they were paying for, it was the company.

The waitress came to Holden and leaned over him, dangling her almost bare breasts just inches from his face. Holden smiled. It was hard not to enjoy certain things about places like this. He looked over at Jimmy who was already making out with the girl who’d sat next to him. Holden smiled. He might as well get his money’s worth. He slipped a credit card into the waitress’s bra, between her two breasts, and she leaned even closer and licked his mouth with her tongue.

He looked over at Jimmy again. Jimmy was looking right at him, grinning.

“You cheering up yet, brother?” Jimmy shouted from across the table. Jimmy’s girl looked at Holden and spread open her legs. He could see that she wasn’t wearing panties or anything else beneath her skirt. He had a clear view right to her bare, young, perfectly delicious looking vagina.

Holden looked at the girl next to him. She was trying to look cool, not smiling, just staring back at him like she knew everything that was going to happen that night. Holden reached forward and took the champagne from the bucket. He popped the cork and poured four glasses. Then he caught the waitress’s eye and ordered another bottle.

“So,” he said to the girl who was sitting right next to him. “What’s your name, sweetheart.”

“Natalia,” the girl said. She spoke with a strong Russian accent.

“Natalia,” Holden repeated. He took her face in his hand. Two years had passed since he’d made out with another woman. Two long years since his beloved wife had fallen from the rooftop of the Plaza Hotel. Two years since the ambulances and police cars had closed off the corner of Fifth Avenue and Fifty-Eighth Street and tried to rescue her.

He leaned forward and his lips met Natalia’s. His tongue slipped effortlessly into her mouth and licked hers. She moaned as he kissed her. He reached out with his hand and felt between her thighs, under the short skirt of her dress, to the place where he knew her bare, moist, soft pussy was waiting for his hand. This was to be his first time with a woman since Meg’s tragic death. It was sordid and seedy and horrible, but so was life sometimes.

Natalia leaned back on the couch. Holden caught Jimmy’s eye. Jimmy nodded. Holden put his hand up to Natalia’s perfect vagina and let the tip of his finger slide into the lips of her pussy. She was already wet. She was looking at him. He looked back at Jimmy. Jimmy seemed to be paying more attention to Holden than he was to his own girl. Holden raised his eyebrows, questioningly.

“Holden,” Jimmy said. He was shouting over the noise of the music.

Holden took his finger out of Natalia’s wet clit. He had everything a man needed to have a great night, sexy girls, champagne, music.

“What?” he said.

“Are you having fun?”

“Yeah.”

Jimmy didn’t look like he believed him. He stood up. “Come on,” he said. “Let’s go?”

“What? Why? This is great.”

“No it’s not. I can tell. You’re just going through the motions. You don’t want to be here.”

Holden looked at Natalia. She was a bombshell. He knew he should have been dying to sleep with her. His dick should have been rock hard. But it wasn’t.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart,” he said to her. He took out his wallet and left three hundred dollar bills on the table. “Have a drink on us.”

He and Jimmy made their way back out of the club. When they got to the exit they had to push their way out through the crowd of people still coming in.

“Jesus,” Jimmy said. “I’m sorry. I thought that place would be cooler.”

“It was fine,” Holden said. “It was just me. My head’s not in the game.”

“Your head’s just fine,” Jimmy said. “That place sucked. Let’s go to Ruben’s. The beer’s on me tonight.”

“Jimmy, you were just trying to show me a good time.”

“I should never have brought you there,” Jimmy said. “We’re better than that.”

They got into the pickup and Holden gunned the engine. The bouncer came running over to the truck with Holden’s credit card. “Come back anytime you like,” he said.

“Thanks,” Holden said, and pulled the truck away from the curb.

He’d tried to be normal. He’d tried to have fun. He just couldn’t do it.
