The connection between us twined us together like two threads in a string pulled tight. He plucked me and I vibrated against his hand, so wet with desire that I could only gasp for him not to stop.

He kissed me deeply and my body flared, the flames of desire licking at my raw nerves. He pulled his fingers against me, his thumb rubbing slow circles down there.

“Yes, oh Hutch, yes, oh please, yes!” I struggled not to scream as his hand moved slow, achingly slow, teasing me and pulling away right before I reached the cusp.

“More,” I said. “More.”

“Take it yourself,” Hutch whispered in my ear. “Come and meet me halfway.”

I knew what he meant. The animal inside me was already scratching to be let out. The passion inside me had awakened it. I steeled myself. This was hard for me to do, even now. I remembered the blood, the fight, and it scared me. I scared myself.

His fingers moved and I cried out as the pleasure shot through my body.

“You can do this,” Hutch murmured. His lips fluttered soft kisses over my collarbone and under my ear in the soft spot of my neck.

“Yes,” I whispered. It was right there, just under me. My wolf. I took a deep breath and cracked the boundary. A growl moved through my body, starting from my toes and moving up in a wave through my lungs, to my throat.

“Let it out,” Hutch said, his fingers barely moving. Every nerve in me was growling now, raring to be satisfied. I needed it. I needed
him
.

Opening myself, I felt every sensation awaken to my newfound wildness. The sparks of our connection sizzled and crackled through my body, and the touch of his fingers on me grew, grew until I couldn’t stand it.

Now
.” It was a whisper that moved through me in delicious agony. Then Hutch thrust his fingers deep into me and sent me into a shattering orgasm. I held on for dear life as my climax tore through my body, sending me rolling over and over, dizzy and thrilling. I clutched myself to him and shuddered once, again, again, as his fingers found new places in me, exploring and stretching me even as I shook with passion.

“Oh, Hutch
!” I cried out, my spasms taking over once more, my hands trying to find some kind of anchor to keep me from shifting into wolf form. I needed him, needed to breathe. I had forgotten to take a breath during my climax, and the new rush of oxygen into my lungs sent me into another bout of dizziness.

Before I could even relax, Hutch was moving. He tore off my panties and threw them across the room, then pulled down his pants. His huge cock throbbed, standing at attention, and he gripped my thighs with both hands, spreading my legs open.

“Hutch—”

I could barely speak, barely move. My nerves were still shattered from the orgasm, and all of my muscles twitched, useless. Hutch seized his lips in mine, and I was sent into another paroxysm of desire, my core clutching where his fingers used to be.

“Mine,” he murmured. “My mate.” His swollen cock slid between my thighs, pressing its way to my opening.

“Yours,” I whispered back. “All yours.”

His hand brushed through my hair tenderly, and he darted a kiss on the tip of my nose. Then he shifted his weight up and into me.

I groaned as the tip of his cock slid into me. As slick as I was, his thickness stretched me to my breaking point. He rocked forward and I gasped for air as he filled me, pushed his way forward and sent his passion aching through my own body.

The connection between us had grown stronger and stronger, and now that I had let my wolf surface, I began to sense even more. When he rocked forward, I could feel the delicious friction as he felt it. When he rocked back, I felt his aching need. I let the sensation take me over.

Now I was feeling the motions of sex as he felt them, and I was shocked at the intensity of his desire. He restrained himself almost completely, and his need made me groan.

“Let go, Hutch,” I whispered. My voice was raw, jagged in the thick air. Everything was hot and slick, but I needed it as much as he needed it. More.

“Natalie—”

“I want it. You want it. Let go.”

I heard the rumbling of his growl and then his irises burned golden. He thrust his swollen cock deep into me and I cried out, not for him to stop, but for him to keep going. I wanted him to fill me, to own me. He thrust in and up, rocking into me harder and harder. I gripped his hips and pulled him deep inside. Our bodies twined together. We rocked as one, in a single rhythm, fast and gasping.

His need spiraled up through both of our bodies, and I latched onto his wave, riding him as hard as he was riding me. Faster, faster, he slammed his cock into me, and with every jolt came a shock of pleasure, a newfound need for him to possess me body and soul. His climax was coming hard and fast and I clutched his chest, needing it as much as he did.

The wave moved through me as he drew one final breath, and then his climax exploded through us both. I screamed against his shoulder as he hitched a gasp and shuddered hard. My body twisted and he held me tight, and the connection between us burned white with passion as I felt the last thrust of his cock inside of me.

We lay like that for a few minutes, his body pressed against mine. I felt him soften and then he slid out from inside of me, his cock slick against my thigh. Still he held me tight, and we breathed together, soft inhales and exhales until our heartbeats came back to normal.

Hutch kissed me on the top of my head, nuzzling my hair.

“You’re an excellent nurse,” he said. “I think you fixed me all up.”

“Good,” I said. “Then let’s go have some dinner.”

We walked out through the living room, where my dad and Gina were having a shouting match over the commentators of the football game.

“I can’t believe you think he’ll be back next season,” he cried out. “He’s the worst kicker they’ve ever had!”

“Did you see that punt?” Gina said. “Where did that punt go? Because I think it ended up at the four yard line, if I’m not mistaken.”

My dad threw up his hands in exasperation. Gina winked at me knowingly, and I brushed my hand through my mussed up hair.

I still didn’t know what had happened between Hutch and Gina, but I got the feeling that he’d hurt her. Maybe even more than he hurt me. It was going to take a long time for him to earn back her trust, and the trust of the pack. But they were talking, and for now that would have to do.

“Dinner soon?” Hutch asked. “This one can’t stop complaining about being hungry.”

I elbowed him in the side and he doubled over in fake pain. Gina thumbed at the front door over the back of her chair.

“Barbecue’s near ready if you got the hotdogs.”

“Great,” I said. “I’m not even going to ask if you want one, Hutch.”

He grinned and I went out to the front yard. The place was overrun with shifters. Hutch’s old pack had done their best to set up the trailers in an orderly way along the street, but order wasn’t one of their strong suits. Kids raced down the sidewalk and a group of women sat in chairs in the yard, watching them play. The barbecue smoked next to the front porch, and two guys with beers tended to the steaks with fierce concentration.

The pack was in limbo. Tommy’s mysterious benefactors had shut down the fights and kicked them out of the warehouse. After what went down in Atlantic City, neither of them saw a cent of the fight money and as a result, Pops and I had suddenly found ourselves with a large extended family that was half-human, half-wolf. I smiled. If you could choose your family, this would be the one I would have chosen.

It couldn’t last forever and no one knew what was going to happen next, but even after all that had happened, they still trusted Hutch to take care of them.

A guy in a suit stumbled over the toys lying on the sidewalk. Clipboard in hand, he looked up nervously at the house.

“Can I help you?” I asked. He pressed his glasses up on his nose and clutched the clipboard in front of him.

“This is your house?” he said.

“Yes.”

“Great! Well, I wanted to talk to you about Tommy Calloway’s campaign for the upcoming city council election. Do you have a minute to talk? I’d like to tell you about some of Mr. Calloway’s plans to uh… clear up the city and make it safe for… um...”

I narrowed my eyes and stared at the guy. Then, without saying a word, I pulled my dress over my head. It was Hutch’s favorite dress and I didn’t want to rip it. I folded it neatly as the guy tried to avoid looking at my magnificent body. I felt no shame, and why should I? This was the body that had tamed a mighty alpha wolf. This was the body my lover couldn’t get enough of.

I leaned forward, my swaying breasts brushing his arm as I placed my lips close to his ear. My breath warm. My voice becoming deeper, half way to a growl already.

“Run.”

“Wha? Huh… oh!
Ahh
!”

I let the animal out and it howled with gratitude as the man’s clipboard clattered to the ground. The shifters around him hooted and hollered as he ran, but I waited until he reached the sidewalk before I gave chase. Just fast enough and far enough to make sure that he never came back. I pulled up at the curb at the end of the street and grinned, watching the campaigner run for dear life.

For the first time in my life, I felt comfortable in my own skin... whatever form that skin took. It was liberating and wonderful, and as I heard my mate padding up the street behind me, I howled for the sheer joy of it all.

Hutch stood next to me for a moment, his proud features marred by a smear of ketchup on his snout, before he licked his chops and took off running. As he ran he glanced back at me, his tail wagging, inviting me to join him.

Once we reached the next block, I took the lead. He followed, nipping at my heels as I headed across the old train yard, jumping walls and ducking under the rusted carcasses of old rolling stock. I was heading for the scrubland beyond, the places where nature was clawing its way back in ivy and weeds into an abandoned industrial park. Humans tried to keep it out, but wilderness was taking back its rightful place.

With the newfound grass underneath our feet, we picked up speed. We ran side by side, heading nowhere in particular, out into the wild. I felt like I could run for hours, forever and ever, fueled only by the love I had for my alpha. Hutch and I were true mates, and his last fight was anything but the end for us. His pack -
our
pack - would go on in whatever form it could, and we would go on together. My heart thrummed in concert with his, and when I looked over he smiled at me, and I knew he would run alongside me for as long as I wanted.

Our story was just beginning.

EXCERPT:

The ranger grinned and lifted Wren up and over the boulder's ledge as though she weighed nothing. Her legs wobbled under her as her feet found solid ground on the top of the boulder. The upper pool above the dam was much larger than the bottom pool, and an even bigger waterfall streamed down the side of the mountain to feed it. Wren wouldn't have been able to continue tracking the bear anyway--the next waterfall was much too steep.

"Now why don't you put that gun away and tell me what you're doing here."

"I--I--you--I don't--" Wren waved her hand vaguely in the direction of his body as she tucked her gun back into her jacket. The ranger was just standing there next to the pool as though nothing was the matter. As though it was perfectly natural to carry on a conversation with a stranger in the nude. And now that her gun was away, she had nothing to look at but his... but him.
