I
guess I’m supposed to tell the story of our happily ever after at this point,
right? People will be dying to hear how the lovely couple—that would be me and
Luca, btw—they probably just spent a huge part of their life reading about went
on to get married and have kids and sail away into the sunset. Nope. Didn’t
quite happen that way for us.
Instead,
I want everyone to know how Simona’s death brought the stubbornly handsome
Martuccio boys back together again. How Luca has made peace with his new role
as the father to a gorgeous little girl who has his bright blue eyes and
Simona’s smile. How Jojo entered rehab and then left Italy a month later,
unfortunately, with Jeremy D’ Onofrio by her side. How Nikolai went on to open
his own music company, separating his troupe from Mother and putting distance
between the four of us for the first time in eight years, including my brother,
Alek. How my father was the one who sent the doves that Luca knew nothing about
on the day we rode underneath the Bridge of Sighs, making me happy to know he
somehow read my letter, and giving me a sliver of hope in thinking maybe
someday he will try to change and make amends for the things he has done to his
family.
Some
of these events have been painful to experience. Life doesn’t always wind up
fixing itself and leaving a happy ending that comes complete with a boat made
out of gold waiting to carry its passengers off into the sunset.
Back
to the epilogue. I’m going to shake things up a bit and try something different
this time, since Luca and I were hardly the average couple that was struck
stupid by cupid and his sneaky little arrows of insta-love the way it happens
for so many others, including Giuseppe and Simona Martuccio.
I
want to share the letter I wrote to Colleen McCullough, the author of the
Thorn
Birds
.
Dear
Ms. McCullough,
I
want to thank you for writing such a beautiful story that has managed to
survive throughout the years with its underlying messages of hope and
unconditional love that finds a way to thrive even among tons of heartache and
pain. Without having the chance to have read Meggie and Ralph’s story, I would
never have found the guts to go against the things feeding my fears. I would
never have taken a chance on, and fallen in love with, one of the most
beautiful families I’ve ever met, the Martuccios.
In
doing so, I not only met my soul mate, the one true man of my dreams, but I
found out that losing the person I portrayed to the world on the outside has
created a way for me to release the woman hiding on the inside, the true me.
Life is about taking chances, seizing an opportunity while you can. It’s about
finding a way to make the best out of some crappy situations the world has a
way of tossing at you. Time keeps going, even among loss. However, it’s how we
choose to move forward and cherish those who stay behind to share new ventures
with us that gives us the strength to rise above the pain, to live, to love.

The
words to our song ends here, but that’s the beauty of music. You can replay a
tune as many times as you like, and each time you listen to it there’s yet
another note you might have missed hearing the last ten times it played, which
touches a different part of your soul. That’s where Luca and I stand. I intend
to hit the repeat button as many times as possible. I don’t want to miss a
thing. Can’t help myself. He’s kind of addictive in that way. Our music begins
again today ... yet another Aria in Venice.
