“You won’t hurt me,” I tell him and I’m talking about more than just tonight.

We look into each other’s eyes the whole time, as he guides himself towards me. I feel a sharp stab of pain, as he enters me, and then, there’s just a sense of completeness as he fills me up. He starts to move slowly, pumping his hips. At the same time, I lift mine up to meet him. We don’t break our stare as we move together. It feels like we know how to please each other, as if we’ve always known. Mick picks up the rhythm and he slides in and out of me, faster and faster, until I dig my nails into his back. It seems like he knows that means that I’m close. I cry out something completely incoherent, as I come for the second time. Mere moments later, Mick growls my name, as he thrusts into me for the last time, and relaxes.

We stay like that for a few minutes. I feel like I’m floating on a cloud and I tangle my fingers in his hair, as we catch our breath. As consciousness and rationality seep back into my brain, all the sensible thoughts that I pushed to the back of my mind come rushing back. I know that what I did was irresponsible. I’ve just slept with a guy that I barely know and, as I catch sight of my crumpled uniform on the floor, I remember that I don’t have a job to go back to.
What the hell were you thinking, Cali?
The negative voice in my head has recently started to sound more and more like Tanya and I wonder if I’m ever going to get away from her.

“What’s the matter?” Mick asks and I wonder if he can hear my thoughts.

“Nothing,” I reply, but I feel myself freeze up as I say the word.

“Tell me,” he says gently, but he doesn’t let go of me. I find myself a little distracted by the sight of this gorgeous man in my crappy motel room.

“It’s just...” I trail off, not wanting to meet his gaze.

“It’s just what? You can tell me, you can trust me,” he tells me. The sincerity in his gray eyes almost makes me believe him.

“But that’s just it,” I say, sitting up and trying to cover myself up with the bed linen. “I can’t trust you. I don’t even know you. I’ve been let down before, and as nice as it would be to believe that I can rely on you, it’s not the smart thing to do. I’ve learned the hard way,” I say, not wanting to cry as I think about my dad.

“You can rely on me,” Mick says and his voice doesn’t even waver.

“Right up until you ride out of town, right?” I laugh a little bitterly, as I realize just how stupid I’ve been.

“I’m not riding out of here unless you’re with me,” he says, without even stopping to think about it.

“You don’t mean that,” I say, not wanting to believe that what he’s saying could be true, could be real.

“Don’t I?” Mick takes my face in his hands and kisses me. It feels like a promise. I know that my eyes are glistening from the tears that are threatening to fall. I feel safe and warm and home for the first time in a long while.

“Don’t break me,” I tell him, knowing that he has the power to. Whatever has passed between us is deeper than anything I’ve ever felt before. I want to lean on him, I want him to wrap me in his arms and never let me go.

“Breaking you, Cali Bloom, would be like breaking a piece of myself. It’s not going to happen,” he assures me. More than anything, I believe him.
