What sort of cricketers, furthermore, will a T20-centric system produce? Don't bet on there being an Australian Alastair Cook or Graeme Swann any time soon, or even another Simon Katich, let alone a Ricky Ponting. When Australia's captain was ushered a little closer to the exit on Thursday, he was not just a declining Australian captain but an anachronism – a tough, brave, single-minded, self-motivated, record-breaking Test batsman with no time for T20 and its artificialities. The cricket of the future, it seems, will be less like the game he grew up on, and more like the pursuit played on the MCG outfield after the Ashes were sewn up.
