Later, although he gave no indication of it, Riley was almost certain that Joe had heard
some of their sex. When she came back downstairs and met his eyes, for some reason, she
blushed to the roots of her hair, even though Joe’s eyes were harmlessly blank.
“I’m not going to get trapped in that room again with you and have you screw my brains
out while your family and mine are visiting,” Riley said saucily to Heron. “Earlier in the evening
was embarrassing enough.” She ran a teasing finger over his sensuously shaped lips and yelped a
little when he closed his mouth over the finger and sucked at it. Riley shivered but pulled her
finger out, laughing up at him. “You’re going to have to wait just a few more hours.” She put her

“I love you,” Heron said, his eyes suddenly serious
Riley drew back a little, surprised. And she caught her breath when she saw what he was
saying reflected in his dark eyes.
“I can’t believe that I lived this far without you, Riley,”
Close to tears as emotions threatened to swamp her, she whispered hoarsely, “I love you,
Heron.”
Heron drew her back into his arms and Riley let herself rest in them. Heron turned his
head and kissed her on the temple. She closed her eyes, savoring the feeling of such contentment
and happiness. They were comfortable to remain that way for rest of the dinner, savoring the
exquisite joy of being in each other’s arms, half listening to their family members carry on
conversations all around them.
