Margaret Marshall Saunders
was a Canadian author best known for her novel
Beautiful Joe
. Much of
Saunders’s work addressed social issues, including child labour, slum
clearance, and animal cruelty. Active in local media, Saunders co-founded the
Maritime branch of the Canadian Women’s Press Club with
Anne of Green Gables
author Lucy Maud Montgomery, and was made a Commander of the Order of the
British Empire (CBE) in 1934. Other titles by Saunders include

. Saunders died in 1947.
