I grinned at him, and he at me. I grabbed his head by the sides and moved him down to my clit and let his tongue apologize for the burst of violence he’d committed. Oh did that tongue of his ever wanted to be forgiven. Just as I began to pardon him, there as an orgasm’s temporal erasure began, I felt a paintbrush handle enter me, even while the tongue still made its plea. I came around that brush handle so hard. (I’d later find the inside of my thighs to be bright green with paint.) Mr. Irldale climbed back up beside me and we lay there together, both breathing heavily as we looked up at the ceiling, now painted with the soft glow from the frosted windows.

“Please tell me you guys offer a sculpting class,” Mr. Irldale said.

I laughed. “Come here,” I said, and reached down for that limp member of his, only to find it hard. I pushed against it with my open palm, wrapped it with my fingers, moved myself closer to him and slipped it back within me. We were as close as a man and woman can be physically, breast to chest, heart to heart. He didn’t thrust. I didn’t buck.

“Now pay attention,” I said.

“Okay,” he said.

I pressed my body against his, felt him in me just a tiny bit deeper, found my lips at his ear. “Muscles,” I whispered, and we laughed, then kissed again, because this thing between us was not made of tears and laughter, not comedy and drama. What I had was the kind of heat that made me feel that perhaps, just perhaps, I might be blessed with that contentment known as happiness. Maybe, just maybe, this could continue. We moved nearly imperceptibly against each other, minutely joining, separating, joining as I felt him within me.

Ah, the things I wished for; the certainty I felt. All while change was waiting just outside the door to pounce on me.

But there, just then, I was a blissfully ignorant woman and he, he was my man. Beside me, in me, around me. Mine.
