“You okay, babe?” Cole asked from the other side of the bathroom door. I gripped the edge of the sink as a wave of nausea struck.

“I’m fine. I’ll be right there,” I said and fumbled in the medicine cabinet for the box I’d picked up at the drug store the other day, just in case.

“Shelby, come on, Dad is waiting.” Abbey knocked on the bathroom door a few moments later.

“I know, I know, just a minute.” I looked at my watch and at the small applicator on the edge of the sink, praying for time to speed up and not prepared in the least for the result I saw changing before me.

“Hurry up in there, our plane leaves in an hour,” Cole said with a bit of impatience. “I can’t imagine what you--”
I flung open the door, a look of shock on my face.
“Sweetheart, you don’t look very good. Are you sure you don’t need a doctor?”
“Baby. You. Me. Right here.” I clutched the tiny applicator.
“Baby? You mean we’re having a baby?” Cole stared dumbfounded. “Are you for real?” He threw my words back at me.

“It doesn’t get any more real than this,” I said and held up the two bright blue lines for him to see, then bit my lip. “I know we didn’t talk about this, and it, it wasn’t part of the deal, but--”

“Some things don’t need to be negotiated, sweetheart, they just are.”
“Are what?”
“Meant to be.” His smile came slow and sweet, full of wonder and tenderness and love.

The odds of us falling in love might not have been in our favor at first, but I knew in my heart--same as I’ve always known--this was a love I’d bet on every time.
