Abby’s nose curled and she glared at the sheriff, but she didn’t say anything else.

“Stay here,” Dirk said. “Help up, keep us safe from those things. Teach us how to beat them and protect our town. I’m sure they’re not all gone. There’s gotta be more they left behind. Stay with us, prepare us. We’ll pay you, then come spring, you’ll have money and supplies and you can hit the trail right. Can even form a posse to take with ya.”

Connor and Abby looked at each other. “It’s a good deal, Connor,” Abby said as she leaned close to him. “I don’t want to stay behind, I don’t want to wait, but if we die in the mountains, it’ll do no good. Just us, after that whole pack, we’ll never win. We need to prepare and be ready when we meet them again. We could use the money.” She glanced back at the way they had first come into the town. “Besides, there are still more of them out there. I can feel it.”

Connor’s lips pressed together in a tight line. The path wound up high into the mountains, clearly visible in the rising sun. Jeremiah was up there somewhere, a ruthless killer, an abomination of nature. But Connor also wanted to believe that somewhere inside was a bit of Jeremiah’s soul left, some smidgen of truth to the tale the undead man had told about his plans for the other woman.

“All right,” Connor said. “We’ll stay here for the winter. Then leave once the snow melts.”

Sheriff Dirk clapped him on the back. “Good man, good man,” he said as he grinned at Abby again.

Connor glared at him. “But if I catch you leerin’ at my woman ever again, I’ll kill you dead right then and there.”

Abby grinned at Connor as the other sheriff sputtered for a response.

“Come on, Abs,” Connor said, ignoring them both. “We got work to do.”
