Gerald
Phillips.

Turning
back toward Ross, he forced a smile. "I'll be sitting next to Mr. Phillips
tonight?"

Mr.
Ross shook his head as he removed the sheet of paper with Phillips' name on it.
"No. I'm afraid Mr. Phillips won't be permitted to join us anymore."

The
finality of the statement told Marc either Phillips had been staked or he'd
been exiled to some dreadful outpost for failing to dust the Romanian.
Whichever it was, the idea made him smile. The sooner the Archons were rid of
men like Phillips, the better.

Taking
his seat, Marc prepared for the biggest night of his almost one hundred years
as a vampire. All those nights clerking under his sire in preparation for
becoming Archon, all those boring cases he'd listened to for years in that
French backwater would finally be just bad memories he could forget after
tonight.

Tonight
was just the beginning.

A
man Marc had never met stood at the podium to begin the meeting. Dressed in a
grey Italian suit, he looked impressive, even to Marc's discerning eye. Whoever
he was, he was someone to watch. That was for certain.

"My
fellow Archons, we've lost one of our own in recent nights. I'm happy to
report, however, that the assassin has been found and staked. Know this, my
friends: we will not tolerate this kind of behavior in our world. Now some have
heard murmurings that the Barcelona Archon fell at the hands of one of the Sons
of Navarus. Let me assure you that this is incorrect. The Sons are weakened and
on the run. They fear us far more than we should be concerned about them."

Marc
listened to the words being spoken and heard the same tone he used when he
spoke of Declan Collins. The well-dressed man who stood in front of them was
lying. He knew it as well as he knew he lied every time he boasted about
Collins' death.

"But
there is good to report tonight. The Order of Macaria has been breached. Our
spy assigned to Alexander Regas, the leader of the group in charge of the
Prophecy of Idolas, has succeeded in eliminating that member of the Order. I am
pleased to tell you that before he so valiantly gave his life for our cause, he
was able to unearth information about the prophecy that will help us defeat the
Sons of Navarus."

The
news that a member of the Order of Macaria had been assassinated by an Archon
spy set the meeting chamber abuzz. Marc now understood why he was slated to
speak second this night and waited for the crowd to quiet down to hear what
this information was.

"We've
long known the words of the Prophecy of Idolas but not its meaning. Disjointed
words and phrases are nothing to those who don't understand the meaning. We now
know there are four who possess the knowledge necessary to unlock the secrets
of the prophecy. We must find those four vampires and eliminate them if we want
to fulfill the sacred prophecy foretold by Idolas, the youngest son of Macaria
and Navarus. And when we do so, we will triumph over the Sons of Navarus and
create the vampire world prophesied by Idolas, the vampire world that was
always meant to be!"

The
Archons in the floor seats rose from their seats and cheered. Marc stood
watching more than cheering, noting every movement of the man at the podium.
Just as he'd always known, his fellow Archons were little more than the average
vampire—sheep so easily led. A few well-chosen words spoken in the right tone
of voice and they were on their feet applauding.

As
the man at the podium continued to speak of what amounted to be meaningless
details, Marc was escorted to behind the stage for his turn to address the
meeting. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, he heard the words he'd
dreamed of so many days.

"The
good news has only just begun, my fellow Archons. Please let me welcome Archon
Marc Verrater to the stage with even more wonderful news."

Marc
climbed the stairs to the stage and stared up at the privacy boxes on the top
level. Those held the men he wanted to impress tonight. His news of another Son
dead and his plan to control all vampires after the Archon takeover would do
it. He was sure of it.

The
crowd of men wanting to speak to him grew by the moment, thrilling Marc. This
is what he'd been meant for. Let those other men content with simply being an
Archon hear mundane cases filled with boring vampire law. Small minds belonged
in those positions.

His
report of the details surrounding the elimination of two Sons of Navarus had
been received with a thundering round of applause. Drinking in the incredible
feeling of success, he'd made sure to leave the best for last. His plan for
control of all those average vampires after the Archon rise to power was
brilliant, and the impressed faces before him agreed. Not even the news that their
spy had stolen information about the prophecy from a member of the Order
himself had eclipsed him.

Cutting
through the throng surrounding him, Marc saw his sire and another man coming
toward him. "Verrater, I must say I'm speechless. You've done me proud."

Marc
slowly nodded his head at his sire, Michael. "I owe it all to you,
sire."

Motioning
to his left, his sire directed Marc's attention to the equally impressive man
next to him. "Let me introduce you to Magistrate Consera."

Shaking
hands with the magistrate, Marc made a quick study of the man. Unlike his sire,
who was older and grey, Magistrate Consera was young, like him. He gave a firm
handshake and stood straighter than other magistrates Marc had met before.

"Two
Sons and your plan?  You must come up to my private box so we can discuss all
this. You should have been first speaker tonight. You outshined even my Archon.
I think I see your star rising, Verrater."

"Yes,
sir."

An
hour later, he'd successfully mastered his first quarterly Archon meeting and
gained an important ally in another magistrate. As Marc stood admiring the
scene from his window, he dialed the number of the man the magistrate had given
him to handle all of his hunting needs.

"I'm
going to need two teams. Send me your best hunters. One team will be needed to
find four vampires. The other one will find one woman, no less important."

He
hung up the phone, throwing it on the coffee table. Soon they'd have the
knowledge they needed to ensure the Sons failed. And soon he'd have the one necessary
for his plan to work.

Solenne.

In
the meantime, he had Emily waiting with champagne in his bedroom. A decent fuck
and a good drink to celebrate a great night.

He'd
take it.
