“That’s fascinating. I never would have pictured you as the maternal type,” he said lightly.

“Oh, I’m not. I just had a knack for medicine at a time when doctors were scarce. Especially in rural Canada in the 1940s.” That much was true but she never had a chance to practice her dream.

“Is delivering a Were any different than with a human?” He seemed genuinely interested. She found she wanted to talk about it still, even after all these years.

“Yes and no. A Were carries for nine months, and in that time she must shift at least once a month, having no choice on the night of the full moon.” He nodded. “The fetus will shift when she does, but sometimes if the baby isn’t strong enough, the Were will miscarry. It’s hard for young mothers especially. But if she carries to full term and barring no accidents that accompany childbirth, the baby will be fine. The child won’t shift on its own again until puberty.”

“I never knew. I always assumed females would have to hold off the shift while pregnant. That a fetus can shift that young is amazing. Why not again until puberty?”

“The mother pretty much controls all of a fetus’s functions while pregnant. Did you know some babies will gestate for nine months perfectly healthy, and then die at birth because they were born with no brain?” He shook his head, seemingly amazed. “It’s true. A mother’s body is built to provide. They won’t shift again because it takes years to become strong enough to shift and control it.”

“When did you first shift?” He asked.

“I shifted at eleven.” She smiled.

“Is that good?” He asked, and she laughed.

“Yeah, it’s alright. I had a friend that shifted at nine. I was so jealous.” She laughed again at the memory.

“What color are you in wolf form?” Boy, he was curious.

“Black all over, but my feet are white.” She held up her hands like they were paws.

“Hmm, so dirty all over, but clean where it counts.” He grinned at his own joke, but it only served to remind her that her hands weren’t clean. Not really.  She didn’t want to let him see how it had upset her, so she decided to turn the subject back to him.

“So what does an eight hundred year old Vampire do with his time besides fight crime?” She joked. But when his eyes darkened to a shade closer to black than grey, and his heated gaze trailed up and down her body she put in quickly, “Do you like movies?”

“I enjoy movies, yes.” But he was still staring at her in that way.

“What’s your favorite?” She asked trying to distract him. If this kept up, she was going to end up as breakfast.

“Independence Day,” he said. He put one of his hands on the top of the couch and one at the seat by her leg. “You?” He was leaning in towards her.

“I love Independence Day. My favorite is The Shawshank Redemption though.” She was squeaking now. Her back was pressed against the end of the couch and he was creeping up her chest, never breaking eye contact.

“That’s one of my favorites too. I also enjoy 70s racing films,” he said, breathing into her mouth now. They were nose to nose again.

“I thought you said you weren’t going to attack tonight,” she tried.

“I’m not attacking you, Victoria.” Then why was her pulse racing and her traitorous breasts pressing up to reach him?  In fact, he really wasn’t even touching her.

     “Then what is this?”

“Waiting,”  he whispered. She almost asked “On what?”, but then realized he was waiting on her permission. That put a whole new spin on her feelings. He was no longer an eight hundred year old Vampire crawling up her chest for dinner; he was an extremely attractive man asking for permission to kiss her. Maybe more if she allowed. Knowing that, she didn’t hesitate to close the distance between them. He growled into her mouth as she slid her tongue passed his lips. She brought her legs up and wrapped them around his waist. As their tongues fought for supremacy she fought to get his shirt out of his jeans. He lifted up somewhat to help but was also trying to get her scoop neck t-shirt down her shoulders to get access to her breasts. When he found them, she moaned into his mouth. He leaned down to lick a trail from collarbone to aching tip. She stopped trying to undo the buttons on his shirt, lost in the sensation. He took hold of the ends of his shirt and just ripped it apart so she could get her hands on him. Buttons rolled down the couch, and she took no time exploring his strong back and shoulders. He started tugging up on her jeans, and she guessed he was trying to get her to lift up so he could get them off. Once he got the zipper down he reached inside and dipped his fingers into her already wet core. He closed his eyes and groaned, and she was breathing double time as he worked her. She started to kick at her jeans, trying to get the restricting material off. He lifted up, sliding down her body to pull her boots off and her socks with them. He tugged at the ends of her jeans, pulling them off too. Now all she had on was her underwear and her shirt and bra pulled down around her waist. She would have felt silly if he wasn’t looking at her that way. He stood to undo the buttons of his jeans. He slid them down his legs, not breaking eye contact with her for a second. She had to look though. Good lord, the man wasn’t wearing underwear. He was absolutely perfect. She reached out to him, drawing him back down. He stopped to slowly pull her scrap of underwear down. He flung them off into the distance and came back to lie perfectly atop her. He brushed a stray curl off her forehead.

“I’m not remiss in that you want this as much as I do, am I?” He asked.

“Do you think I would have let you get this far if you were?” She flexed her hips at him.

“Just checking.” He said before he reached between them to grasp himself firmly, rubbing his tip back and forth across her entrance. Then he slid in, inch after glorious inch. Her back bowed as he slid home. She looked back down at their connected bodies as he slid out and back again, engrossed by the sight. He had his eyes slammed shut, why she wasn’t sure. She lifted her legs and wrapped them around his waist and he hit deeper than before. She gasped, gripping his arms, feeling as they flexed with each movement he made. He groaned into her shoulder, and she caught sight of his fangs again. It seemed silly to be scared of him now. She arched her neck at him, curious to see what he would do. Sure enough, he started kissing a path up her throat. He stopped at her ear and bit down for a second before continuing on across her jaw, to her lips again. A moment of disappointment hit before it was crushed under the weight of his kisses, and the driving force of his hips slamming into hers. As he sped up, she couldn’t stop the little cries coming from her throat. He reared back for a second, looking desperately at her. She understood and heartily agreed with his need. She turned her head again to let him know it was okay. He didn’t stop this time. He bent back down to her throat,  licking her vein once before slidding into her neck with his fangs. She expected it to hurt, at least a little bit, but she didn’t expect the searing blast of flame that would pour from the spot on her neck to spread across her whole body. She started shouting in her native Inuit,  English obliterated completely. As he pulled her blood, she could feel her orgasm spreading out, rebounding off the fire in her veins. She felt her muscles seize up and she cried out one long, loud shout that probably woke everyone in the hotel. Adam reared back, blood running down his chin, and cried out with her. Then he collapsed against her again. He belatedly remembered to lick the blood off her neck and from around his chin.

“Jesus, Mary and Joseph.” He breathed into her hair.

“I didn’t know you were Catholic,” she said, laughing.

“I’m not. Only after sex.” He chuckled with her.  Then he started to get up, lifting her as he went.

    “What’re you doing?” She asked.

“Taking you to the bed. I’m perfectly capable of making love to you like a gentleman.” It was then that she looked down. His erection hadn’t subsided at all.

“Lord have mercy. I should have gotten with a Vamp years ago.”

    “Amen to that.”

Chapter Six

Adam had made love with Victoria until the sun came up. And he only stopped under penalty of death. He couldn’t remember the last time he had felt so good with a woman. Even though the average person who knew him would think he would rut with any female who fell down in front of him, he was quite particular about who he lay with. Victoria didn’t even fit the criteria for his usual female, yet she had blown him away last night like he couldn’t believe. Her passion was real, in every way. She gave all of herself, which was rare, truly, in a woman. It occurred to him, maybe this was what Ethan had been talking about with he said “a creature to breathe for.” He had of course been in love before, but it had been so long he had forgotten what it was like to actually want the woman in his bed to stick around. He lay fantasying about waking up every evening with Victoria in bed, after making love for hours in the night. After he had woken up he had done nothing but just lay in bed thinking about her. He was infatuated. He barely knew her, but he wanted to know her, which was more than could be said for his usual conquests. He thoroughly enjoyed talking with her last night.

Once he felt her stirring to wake up, he closed his eyes and feigned sleep. He wanted to see what she would do. Hopefully she thought Vampires were dead during the day, maybe he could sneak up and scare her in the shower. She leaned over him, checking his face, testing to see if he was breathing, the usual. She even poked him once in the ribs, and he had to suppress a laugh. Then she got up and headed into the living room. He assumed at first maybe she was just gathering her clothes for when she showered, but she didn’t come back to the room. He listened as she dressed. Maybe she was hungry and was calling for room service? He waited. It didn’t occur to him that she was leaving until the door opened and shut, and her booted heel clacked down the hallway. He jumped up and tore through his suitcase, donning his clothes and searching frantically for the vial of potion he had left over from the mission in Columbus. No one knew he had it. He thanked God for that, because the King would have confiscated it if he knew. It was still too early to go out without the protection. He downed it in two seconds and rushed from the room. Belatedly he realized he should check to see if it worked before he tore out the front of the building. What if it had an expiration date? As he skidded to a halt in front of the hotel, no sizzling or burning flesh occurred, so he ran out to search the street. The sun barely tripped him up, unlike the last time he had taken the potion. He had stood in the sun for an hour just looking up at the sky. If he were capable of weeping , he might have. This time all he cared about was Victoria. It did take a second for his eyes to adjust to the glare off of the snow, but he spotted a slim leg with a black boot attached getting into a taxi to his right. It was her, but the cab was already pulling out as he ran. He searched the street again. There was a car parked with the keys still in the ignition, the owner pulling bags out of the back. He slid into the driver seat and as they shut the trunk he pulled out to catch up with the taxi carrying Victoria away from him.  He followed behind at two car lengths between them. His investigators training had kicked in and he wanted to see where she would lead him before he let her know he was following. If she were running home, then he would stop her. If she were running towards something dangerous, then he would save her. If she were running towards another man, he would throttle her. His attachment was already that strong. He wasn’t letting go of her just yet.

The cab eventually pulled over in front of a strip mall. He waited until she paid the driver and got out before he pulled in. He watched as she walked into a pizza parlor. She must be meeting someone. There was no way she had that big of a craving for pizza to come across town without leaving so much as a note. He threw the car into park and got out. Her scent led him inside and past the main dining room, into an office towards the back. He had to push the humans around him into not noticing him as he followed her. When he reached the office, he stood quietly against the wall and just listened.

“What the hell took you so long? Where have you been?” A male asked. Scottish accent, Sutherland most likely.

“I got up late. Give me a break. Where’s Devin?” Victoria asked, ignoring his question about where she had been.

“He’s still in Hyde Park looking for Kenny and Matt. What the hell is wrong with all of you? When we say meet at the safe house in case of emergencies, what do you think we mean?”

“I went to the safe house! I sat around for two hours, freezing my ass off, waiting for someone to show up. I didn’t have my phone, I had Matt's, so it didn’t have everyone’s number. It’s a new phone.”

“That’s an excuse Vic. You should have everyone’s number memorized,” The Scot said.

“Don’t you chastise me, Colin. I went to the fucking safe house. It’s not my fault everyone else panicked. Now, if you’ll shut up and listen I’ll tell you what happened last night.” Adam couldn’t help but quirk a smile at her mouth. So this was Colin, her ex. He might not be able to see the Were, but he would know his voice again if he heard it. “We met up at Domino’s like Devin said, me, Matt, Kenny, Sofia, Garret, Joel, and Pauly. We were waiting on you and Devin when a Vamp from their Investigations department showed up. He knew my name. I don’t know how they found me, but they think I was a part of the attacks in Columbus. I split before he could say anymore. Matt gave me the keys to his bike and I took off. I sat around waiting for everyone to show up at the safe house but no one did. I figured I would go home, grab some stuff and stay with you or Matt.” Adam repressed a growl at this information. “I managed to grab some stuff from my place without being seen, but the wolf was outside my apartment.”
