“I don’t know.” He hunched his shoulders.

“Wouldn’t both of you know if there was?” In an odd way, it was kind of exciting to have something so taboo in Lakeside. Considering that most of the town was over the age of sixty-five, I felt sorry for the whores.

“Why? Because we’re men?” Daman’s tone was bland.

“No, because you’re both in law enforcement, and I thought prostitution was illegal in Texas.” I saw his bland and added some pissed off.

“Have either of you ever been with a hooker?” It was an interesting question.

“Oh my God...of course not.” Ben was outraged.

“No. Why would you even ask that?” Daman sounded scandalized.

“Do you think whores are better at sex than the average person?” I would assume they were.

“How old is the recording?” Daman picked up another tape case and analyzed it.

The subject change did not go unnoticed.

“No idea.” I picked up 80–82 Love Mix and slipped it into the player. I hit play.

The Pointer Sisters sang “Slow Hand.” I fast-forwarded through Rick Springfield’s “Jessie’s Girl” and John Cougar’s “Jack and Diane.”

“...she doesn’t know anything.” It was Molly Miars.

I rewound the tape.

In the middle of the Human League’s “Don’t You Want Me,” the music died away.

“I’ll do it, but it’s not going to be easy.” It was Molly Miars. “She’s clueless. Why go after her?”

It was creepy to hear my dead friend’s voice, especially when she was conducting her contract killer business.

“Don’t know...don’t care. Cervantes says to do her...so...we do her.” Big Tommy was firm on the subject.

“I’ll talk to him.” The smile in Molly’s voice was clear. “I’ll talk him out of it.”

“Just because you’re sleeping with the boss, doesn’t mean he’s your pet. Cervantes doesn’t change his mind.” Big Tommy didn’t sound happy.

“BT, you know I still love you.” There was a loud kissing noise, like she’d planted a big juicy one on him. “You don’t need to be jealous.”

“I’m not. You’re not my type. I’m just worried about you. What’s between the two of you won’t end well.” It seemed that Big Tommy and Molly had been friends.

“I’ve got it covered.” Molly sounded so sure.

But she hadn’t had it covered. She’d been pregnant with Cervantes’s child when he’d had her killed.

Big Tommy sighed. “In case you don’t talk your boyfriend out of killing your friend, how do you want to play it?”

I sat up straight.

He was talking about me...they were talking about me.

“Don’t get me wrong, I’d take her out in a heartbeat, but she doesn’t know a thing.” Molly sounded like she was reciting her shopping list. “When Cervantes asked me to get close to her, I really didn’t want to. But it turns out...she’s cool and not very bright.”

That hurt. Molly hadn’t really been my friend, and she’d thought I was stupid. I rubbed my aching shoulder—the one I’d been shot in while finding out who’d murdered her. I should have just left it alone.

“She’s not a threat.” Molly continued with her reasons for not wanting to kill me—well, she’d said she would if she had to. Was she being lazy, or had she been trying to protect me?

In the background, a door opened and then shut.

“Here’s the man himself.” Big Tommy sounded smug. “We were just discussing Mustang. Molly here wants to know why you want her dead.”

“Hey, baby.” Molly’s voice went up like she was excited. “I’ve missed you.”

There were kissing noises.

“I don’t need a reason to want her dead. I order the hit, you do the hit, that’s how it works...”

I almost fell out of the chair. I knew that voice...intimately. That voice had once promised to love me until the end of time. That voice had coached me through Max’s delivery.

That voice belonged to my ex-husband, David.

“Cold-blooded...having your own wife murde—”

Daman turned off the tape. “It doesn’t mean anything.”

“He’s right.” Ben laid a gentle hand on my arm. “That might not be David.”

This recording couldn’t be taken any other way. “My ex-husband wants me dead and...he’s Cervantes.”
