Blue-Collar Apprenticeship and Industry Training Resources for Canada

Overview

While some prospective apprentices simply find a company that is willing to take them on for training and eventual employment, most industries require the completion of a preapprenticeship training program. Those interested in pursuing a trade will find that apprenticeships are beneficial for improving job prospects. In Canada, the governments of each individual province have responsibility for training and certifying apprentices.

The Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program

The Red Seal Program is an attempt to standardize the apprenticeship process by providing a cross-provincial testing and certification format. The program allows those who graduate from an apprenticeship program and pass a trade’s Standards Examination to work anywhere that recognizes the Red Seal. More information can be found at
www.red-seal.ca
.

About This List

Listed below are individual programs offered at community colleges and trade schools. However, local union offices and trade organizations are also helpful resources for starting a career. Many of those are listed as well. In addition, most provinces have government-level apprenticeship counselors or staff (under
Apprenticeship Contacts
below) who may be able to assist you in your efforts.

NEW BRUNSWICK

Apprenticeship

Information regarding New Brunswick’s programs can be found at
www.gnb.ca
. The government encourages people to go through apprenticeships and articulates this on its website: “A pre-employment course is one of the best avenues to enter into the apprenticeship program. Not only do you learn the basic knowledge of the occupation, but you may also be eligible to receive theory and practical credit towards your apprenticeship program.”
