Matty grinned back. “I don’t mind who talks the most—the least—the best. So long as I can make you speechless, just now and then.”

“More than that,” Jake whispered. “
Way
more than that.” He grinned, too.

“We look like a couple of clowns.” Matty laughed, his eyes bright, his face flushed. “It’s too bloody late—or early—for phone calls, anyway. What time do you have?”

Jake shrugged, though he had a perfectly good watch on his wrist.
Never too late
, he thought. “I make it time to go home. If that’s okay with you.”

Matty nodded, quickly and eagerly, starting to answer but Jake took the two steps forward to close the gap between them, and kissed all the words back into their mouths. The pale morning light caught the edge of his face as he leaned into Matty.

The next day had begun already.
