Near his end, he did loosen the reins on himself a bit more as he felt her contract around him, and then seconds later he lost himself entirely within her, plunging, jerking his hips against her, taking her almost as hard as she wanted him to.
Afterwards, while he was holding her, unable to stop touching her as he ran his hands over her, he allowed that he had never been as happy in his life but right there, with her, and he was rewarded to hear that she agreed with him.
“I’m sorry you had to go through what you did with Hemmingway and your father.”
Rachel shrugged. “If I hadn’t had the horrible time with Mr. H and ended up running away from him, then I never would have found my little patch of Heaven.”
Cage kissed the side of her face and said, “Which reminds me that I have a wedding present for you, Mrs. Lincoln. But I’m not going to give it to you until after Junior’s born and you’ve recovered from the birth, because it involves travel.”
Their tiny honeymoon was just perfect. He spoiled her terribly, indulging himself in indulging her, buying her anything she even remotely fancied as they shopped about town, taking her to horribly expensive restaurants and picking up all sorts of things for the baby that they had sent to the house, where Clare was having one of the bedrooms made over as a nursery for them as a wedding gift.
He’d already told them they were more than welcome to live there with them, mentioning that it was all going to go to Cage anyway once he was gone. But he’d come to love his daughter-in-law, and spoiled her just as much as her husband did—maybe even more, and he wanted all of them around him as much as they could be.
Micajah Clare Lincoln was born a bit premature but was still very healthy several months later, and mother and baby were doing very well afterwards, which resulted in even more gifts and spoiling from two of her three men, anyway.
Napping in the sun almost two months after the birth, Rachel had to admit that she couldn’t believe how blissful she felt. Her son was at her side, dozing after his afternoon snack. Her doting husband lay in the chair next to her, glancing adoringly over at the two of them every once in a while when he looked up from his paperwork.
The equally doting grandpa sat in his chair across from them smoking a pipe, having switched from cigars because both his beloved daughter-in-law and his new grandson both reacted badly to cigar smoke.
“Rachel, love, how are you feeling?” Cage asked, putting his paperwork aside.
“I feel wonderful.”
“Great, then I think it’s time for your wedding present.”
Clare glared at his son. “Are you just now getting around to that, Micajah Donatello Lincoln?”
Cage frowned at his father. “She had to be able to travel, and she couldn’t when we got married, Father.”
“Oh, oh. Well, all right then, I guess.” He winked at his daughter-in-law.
Two weeks later, they were on a train. Rachel had thought that the travel part might be to Europe or something like that, but instead they were headed west, and she wasn’t quite sure how she felt about that. She was happy that he’d relented in allowing her to bring the baby rather than leaving him with a wet nurse, although she had gotten her first spanking—then her first loving—during that very same discussion, after which he declared that either she was going to move into his bedroom, or he was going to move into hers, but that they were not going to have separate bedrooms any longer.
As a result, she was a very satisfied woman sitting next to her husband and holding their baby.
She had no idea where they were headed, although the direction certainly was familiar, and the further they went, the more familiar it got until they got off at the same town she had when she’d been fleeing from the East.
Rachel looked a bit apprehensive when he helped her off the train, but he tucked her arm under his as they got into a hired cab and headed out of town—in very much the same direction as her little “patch of heaven” had been.
They didn’t end up exactly there, but relatively close to it, standing on a piece of land that had a cute little cabin and whose landscape looked much like the one she’d lost, with a small pasture that needed fencing, and a barn that was a bit bigger and in better repair—as was the cabin.
She looked up at her husband, who looked down at her as if he was going to bust.
Then he handed her a piece of paper and took the baby out of her arms, saying, “Read it.”
When she opened it, it was a deed to the property they were standing on. She looked up at him, puzzled.
“You were so happy here, I know—before I came along and caused it to be destroyed. I wanted you to have that again.” He looked down, away from her, then back again. “I just want you to be happy. If this is where you’re happy, then we can live here.”
Rachel was amazed and humbled that he would do that for her. She took a step towards her husband and her son. “I am happy wherever you are.”
Cage didn’t look at all convinced. “How could you really be happy with me? I tied you up, I almost cost you your life–”
“You were surly and insufferable and autocratic and mean. Yes, you were all those things.” She reached up and cupped his cheek. “You were also on the run for your life and in a tremendous amount of pain. You also washed away all of the fear I had about being touched intimately that he had left with me. You brought me a paradise of a different kind, and you were good to me when you weren’t being a bastard.”
Cage knew it was now or never. “I love you, Rachel. I love everything about you, and I adore our son. I don’t care where we live. I can be perfectly happy homesteading with you, here. We could build a wonderful home here.”
Tears flooded down Rachel’s cheeks as she leaned against him and kissed him. “We have a wonderful home in New Orleans, and your father is of an age that he needs his family around him.” She held his face between her palms, and whispered, “And I love you, too, every surly, mean, ogreish bit of you.” She lowered her tone, as if the baby might hear her, “Even the parts that spank me.”
Cage reached down and swung his wife and their child around, barely able to believe how happy he was with the two of them. “Then this will be our country home.”
“A perfect solution,” Rachel agreed. “We’ll get a Sissy and a Cleo and chickens, too”
Cage merely nodded. He’d give her anything she wanted—literally—as long as she was his.
The words “spanking” and “discipline” have always sent a shiver up Carolyn Faulkner's spine.
She knows she's not alone.
Writing started as a way to explore her feelings. Soon short stories flowed from her pen featuring reluctant heroes taking the leading lady in hand, but always for her own good.
Today Carolyn is the author of dozens of books. She writes from her home in Maine, where she lives with her husband and leading man.
