There was a man stood in the middle of the circle. Well-dressed, young-looking and blond, he could have been a stand in for any Hollywood lead actor. Smiling, he looked around the room. One of the magic gang, obviously overcome by all the excitement, screamed. There was a dull thud as she hit the floor on the other side of the room.

“Was it something I said?” the demon asked mildly and stepped forward to look curiously at the circle.

“I am Johnathon, Magus of the Seventh Order and holder of the seal of David. You, foul creature, have been summoned to do my bidding,” Brown announced, pointing a finger at the demon.

“Actually, I don’t give a rat’s ass whether you’re a Magus or Santa Claus.” The demon looked up. “This is a nice circle. I like it. You know why?”

Because it wouldn’t bloody hold him, that was why. I worked furiously at my bonds, desperate to get free before the thing noticed me. Right now it was occupied with Brown and his gang, but that wouldn’t last long.

The rope acted like sandpaper, taking at least three layers of skin from my wrists. Gritting my teeth, I swore under my breath as I forced the loops over my hands.

“Having a little trouble there, dearie?”

Startled, I looked up into bright blue eyes. The demon was crouched right in front of me, on his side of the useless magic circle. A smile played over his lips as he watched me. It was a nice one, but unsettling. Like seeing a smile on a shark, knowing those sharp teeth lurked behind its lips. Unseen, the rope fell to the floor behind me.

“Oh, you know. Just got a little tied up…”

As soon as I spoke, I knew I was in trouble. The expression in his eyes shifted, becoming predatory. The probe slammed against my mental defenses a second later. It knew what I was. Or if it didn’t, it had a damn good idea.

Without thinking, I retaliated. Rolling away from Jasen, I dug deep down inside and tapped the dark well of power I’d ignored for years. With a roar, it flooded back…painfully, as though it were pissed at being locked away all this time. I didn’t blame it. If it were me, I’d have been pissed too.

My hands moved at the same time as my lips. I cast a symbol of power, shaping it with words no human should ever utter, and threw it at the demon. It wasn’t a spell…oh no, I was way beyond Brown’s level. To me, spells were child’s play. I dealt in power, raw power, and I’d just thrown the equivalent of a magical grenade.

It splashed over the stunned demon with a bang, and a burst of lilac light. The color stripped away the human mask he wore, revealing the horns and lizard eyes beneath. There was another thud over on the other side of the room. Witches, they didn’t make them like they used to.

He shook his head and looked at me with renewed interest. “Now
that
really stung. Come here, little witchy, let me have a look at you.”

You will do as I command!
” Brown screamed, not figuring it out yet that he had not only lost control of the situation, but that he’d never actually had it in the first place.

The demon sighed.

“Just hold that thought,” he said and turned back toward Brown and his posse.

Screaming ensued, then other nastier sounds I ignored. Sliding to my knees next to Jasen, I shoved him onto his front. “Come on, handsome. We’ve seriously outstayed our welcome.”

This time, I had no problem with the knots. No longer hiding I was something more than a hunter, I simply wrapped my hand around the rope and willed it gone. The cut ends dropped to the floor as something large and heavy sailed over my head to hit the wall beyond.

It was a body. Dead. The wet trail of blood was too big for it to be anything else.

The silence punctuated only by soft moans of agony tipped me off that the demon had dealt with Brown and his coven. I stood as he strode toward me. Adrenalin slammed through me, my body realizing I had a hell of a fight on my hands.

“Now your turn, little pretty. That was a good hit, by the way. Who taught you? Not Santa over there. I’ve seen more power in a packet of chips.”

“Who taught me? You really don’t want to know.”

I backed up, already casting. As I’d said before, I was no spell slinger. I didn’t need to be. I had been born with magic running through my veins, and now that I’d opened the door, I could be a serious pain in the ass for any demon.

His face kept the pleasant smile, but I felt the power building again. That was the thing with demons—they didn’t need to chant a spell, either.

“You want to dance, pretty boy? Come on then, we’ll dance.”

Before I finished speaking, I cast the magical net I’d constructed. Lilac, the color of my magic, crisscrossed the room, overlaying a grid on it for a second before it died away. The demon laughed.

“And that was supposed to hold me? Come on, you can do better than that. No?” He smiled and the malevolence in his expression chilled me to my boots. He lifted his hands, a fireball glowing between them. “Ahh, well…pity.”

“Oh, come on,” I sneered. “A fireball? Can’t you be a little more inventive?”

He cocked an eyebrow. “Oh? I suppose you have something more interesting?”

He dropped a glance at my hands. Motionless at my sides, it was obvious I hadn’t called power to deflect his fireball.

I smiled. “Yeah. You could say that.”

That was the point my werewolf tackled him from behind.

The two went down in a tangle of limbs and claws. The demon roared in pain as Jasen’s claws opened three deep furrows down his side. Jasen was fully turned now, nothing of the human left in him as he rolled the creature under him, then tried to disembowel the demon with razor-sharp claws. Mental note to self: Tasers brought out the bad boy in any wolf.

Right now, though, the fact my lover had gone over to the furry side was the least of my worries. I had a demon to deal with. He’d seen me, and even if he didn’t know who I was, it wouldn’t take him long to figure it out. My bloodline was one of the most famous in the world, thanks to some twat back in the twelfth century. Which meant demon-boy was going down.

I closed my eyes as the battle raged, and reached deep inside myself. Even before my mother’s death, when I had practiced magic, I’d only ever skimmed the surface. The power I held scared the shit out of me. It was deep, soul deep, even beyond. I didn’t know how far down the well of power inside me went, and, to be honest, I really didn’t want to find out.

But needs must when the devil drives, or when a demon needed flattening. I opened the floodgates and grabbed ahold of the rush of power that ensued. My eyes snapped open. I felt…huge…and cramped at the same time. As if I could see everything, if only my inferior human eyes would just open up a little more,
work
a little better.

Words came out of my mouth. Ones I’d never heard before and had no clue what they meant. The demon seemed to. Pinned down under Jasen’s claws, he screamed every time I spoke. Of course, that also could have been because Jasen seemed determined to turn him into a pincushion.

I lifted my arms as the tension mounted, the power in the room climbing rapidly. It was like being surrounded by a crowd at a stadium, being pressed in the mass of bodies, the presence of thousands of minds. The electric buzz as the crowd prepared to scream in welcome as the band stepped on the stage. Only this wasn’t a stadium, this was a barn or storage shed in the back of the beyond.

Now!
” I screamed, and Jasen rolled off the demon. Perhaps he wasn’t that far gone, after all. As soon as his furry ass was clear, I let loose. Not a fireball, but something else issued from my hands. Think cheap sci-fi effects and laser canons. Surprised? No shit, Sherlock. I’d never seen anyone pull that kind of trick, not even Merlin.

I clamped down on all thoughts of that arrogant twat just in case he listened, and carried on pumping more power into the demon. He screamed and swelled liked a balloon filling with water. My lip curled. I could guess where this was going, and it wasn’t going to be pretty.

My head turned to the side as the skin on my face tried to crawl onto the other side of my head. I’d been covered in blood so many times it wasn’t funny, but when a body popped, it wasn’t just the blood one had to worry about. There were the intestines as well. Which, when one thought about it, were little more than six or seven meters of shit-filled sausage. Gross? Yeah, just a lot.

The scream turned from rage to pure agony. Then it was gone. No “pop,” no grand finale. Just…gone.

Surprised, I dropped my hands, ignoring the fact they glowed like a freaking beacon. What trick was the demon playing now? I opened myself up, trying to sense a magic user in the vicinity. The only thing that pinged my radar was a minor blip to the left. Brown sat hunched against a post where the demon had thrown him. A thick, red pool under him said he wasn’t long for this world.

“What the fuck…?” I walked forward to where the demon had been. Etched on the floor, burnt into the very wood, was a symbol. A name. The demon’s name.

A savage grin of triumph crossed my lips. I’d done the unthinkable. I’d fought a demon and won. Take that Merlin, you jumped up arrogant son of a bitch!

A low rumble warned me not to kick back and party just yet. Fingers still outstretched toward the demon symbol, I froze and looked up. Jasen was crouched less than ten feet away from me, in full wolf-man-thing form. Amber eyes watched me with hatred, drool dripping from his fangs as he snarled. No getting through to him this time. It was me or him.

We moved at the same time. I snatched at the symbol, collecting it to myself. It pulled free of the floorboards with a dry “pop” as Jasen launched himself at me. Nowhere to go, I rolled to my back and held the symbol out in front of me as a shield. At the same time, I yanked the wolf’s tooth from my pocket and opened the gates within me.

I screamed wordlessly as I stabbed the tooth into the symbol, and both were blasted by the lilac stream of power. In slow motion, I watched the werewolf leap, heading for the tender, juicy target that was my throat.

How I was going to hold off over two hundred pounds of werewolf, I had no clue. In the end, I didn’t need to. As soon as the tip of a clawed paw hit my hastily constructed shield, he was thrown back. It went with him, the symbol and tooth ripped out of my hands. A lupine yelp filled the room as he crashed into the post next to Brown, and slid to the bottom. A lilac glow crawled over his skin, wrapping around his furry body like a net. One that tightened. As I watched, it compressed the wolf form, changing its shape back to that of the man.

Magic wrought, Jasen sprawled naked over the floor. Exhaustion, physical and magical, crawled over every inch of my body, invading all my cells. In all my years wielding magic, I'd never attempted anything as big or elemental as constraining a creature's very nature.

"W-Who are you?" Brown asked as I passed. The blood had thickened on the floor beneath him, and already, the light had begun to dim from his eyes. "What are you?"

The smile that curved my lips was triumphant but tired. The after echoes of power rang in my voice as I answered, "I am Guinevere. I am La Fay."

Epilogue

The advantage of having a lover with inhuman abilities was a marked increase in stamina…and, ahem…equipment size. I sighed my pleasure as Jasen moved above me, his cock thick and tightly wedged in my pussy as he worked himself deeper. A good meal and a bottle of vodka between us, and we were both feeling good. Very good.

I clenched around him and lifted my legs to wrap around his hips. He groaned appreciation, but didn’t stop his movements. The wolf’s tooth, now on a chain, dangled from his neck. I couldn’t say where it had come from, only that it had been there when I’d turned him over at Brown’s place. Although, when the light caught it just right, it shimmered lilac. I didn’t question, somehow I’d done the impossible and bound a werewolf.

“Oh yeah, baby, that feels good.” I moaned against his neck as he drove deeper. Conversation after that reduced to grunts and groans, whimpers and moans of pleasure. The sensual tension in my body wound tighter with each heavy thrust and slap of his balls against my ass. With a groan, he thrust so far inside me I thought we’d merged into one being. His body stiffened as he came, his cock jerking and pulsing against the walls of my pussy. The sensation was too much for my already overloaded system. With a cry of pleasure and relief, I came around him.

An hour later, we lay wrapped in each other’s arms, locked in that post-sex, post- alcoholic “we just escaped death by the skin of our teeth” haze. Jasen moved and picked up the wolf’s tooth. He didn’t remember much about the previous night. Nothing after he turned fully, thank fuck. I didn’t fancy explaining how I’d done what I’d done. Especially since I hadn’t told him I was a sorceress by birth.

“I can’t believe you found this. I’ve heard of them…but I didn’t think they were so powerful. Knew of a hunter who tried one before, his wife got bit, and it did squat.”

I shrugged. “I guess the lore is wrong. Perhaps he picked up a fake. I thought it was just a normal wolf tooth at first, to be honest. Picked it up on a whim.”

He dropped a kiss on my head, and yawned widely. “You and your luck. I’m the lucky one. Ever since I met you, my luck has changed for the better.”

I muttered something incomprehensible, pretending to be half asleep. But I lay awake long after Jasen had finally made it to the land of nod. His luck hadn’t changed for the better, it was just that judgment day had been deferred.
