“We’ll see. I’ll be watching your actions and listening closely. I don’t want to wait months either.”
“I may slip up occasionally at first, but I promise each day I’ll get better.” He pulled her head down to him and kissed her mouth. “And I won’t ever holler at you again. I need you, I love you, and my world will never be the same without you.”
“Dr. Rexford, you’re almost poetic. I…”
Someone knocked. “Come in,” Lonato called out.
A young man in a green uniform opened the door. “I’m from rehab. The doctor ordered a session for you before you leave. Afterward, you’ll be discharged.”
Lonato had started to frown, but quickly switched to a more pleasant expression. “Thank you for coming to get me so promptly. I’m anxious to get home.”
The young man smiled. “I can’t blame you. It’s hard to lie in bed when you’re used to being active.”
Lonato eyed the wheelchair the man had brought in with him. Kira waited. She knew how he’d usually react.
“If you don’t mind, I’d like to walk.”
“Rehab is on another floor. It’s hospital policy, Dr. Rexford.” The man looked worried. He expected an explosion of anger no doubt.
“Hmmm.” Lonato glanced at Kira and flashed the half smile she loved. “I suppose I have to be a good example.” He sat in the chair. “Will you wait here for me?”
“Yes.” She bent and kissed him. “Take him away and make him work hard.”
“I’m biting my tongue.”
She laughed as he was rolled out and down the hall. She’d just sat when Hakan came in.
“You’re all alone.”
“Lonato got good news, but he still must do rehab for another week.”
“He’s going to be able to operate?”
“His doctor believes he will.”
“Did you all have a chance to talk?”
“Some, but he knows he’s on probation.” She grinned. “He actually laughed when I teased him. I mean, laughed out loud.”
“I’m glad. Look, I’ve got work to catch up on and patients to see in my office. I won’t get back home until early evening. Why don’t you and Rex take this time for just the two of you?”
“Exactly what I was thinking.” She went to him and wrapped her body tight against his. “You will come home tonight. I want to enjoy both of you together.”
“With such an incentive, I’ll make sure I’m finished by six and home by seven.”
Kira stood on her tiptoes and brushed her lips across his firm, sensuous mouth. Hakan pulled her closer and kissed her thoroughly. His thick, hard cock pulsed against her abdomen. Breathing hard, he let her go and walked to the door. “Just a taste of what’s to come later.” He winked and left.
She went to the window and stared down at the parking lot. She had fallen in love with Hakan and Lonato. All this time she’d been saying she didn’t have time for men in her life. But she wanted a home with them, and children. They loved her and accepted all of her.
The door creaked open. Kira whirled around and saw Averil’s smiling face. “Mom said you’d probably be here. I couldn’t wait any longer to see you.” Averil ran across and hugged Kira.
“Did you have a wonderful honeymoon?”
“Tremendously wonderful, delightful, stupendous, sexy, every superlative adjective I can think of.”
“I’m so glad. How are Cody and Payton?”
“Good. They’re at the ranch. I told them I wanted to visit you alone. We want you to come to a barbecue later this afternoon.”
“Can we make it tomorrow?”
“Sure, I knew today was short notice, but I thought with all the craziness over you’d be ready to relax.”
“I have a date for this afternoon and tonight.”
“A date!”
“You don’t have to act that surprised.” Kira pretended to frown at Averil.
“It’s Dr. Connor and Dr. Rexford, isn’t it?”
Kira nodded her head as Averil grabbed her arms and danced her around the room. Lonato would take that moment to return.
He sat in his wheelchair with a surprised expression on his face. When Averil saw him, she blushed, stopped dancing, and let go of Kira.
“So, is this what I can expect to come home to if I marry you?”
“Probably,” Kira said.
“I think I can handle it. Welcome home, Averil.”
“Did they tweak his personality while he was in surgery for his arm?” Averil asked.
“Now I know where Kira gets her smart repertoire from, you.”
“Don’t blame me. I’m the baby. Kira was born five minutes earlier.”
“My home will never be as peaceful again.” He got out of the chair, thanked the young man, and walked across the room to put his arm around Kira. “I’m trying to talk her into marrying me. Do you have any suggestions on how to get her to say yes?”
“You have to figure out the answer to your question. She’s kept away from most relationships. You and Hakan have apparently made better progress than the others.”
“The two of you are just like your mother. None of you will make it easy for me.” He smiled at Averil. “Tell your mother I’m trying to be good enough for her.”
“Wow, you’ve got it bad.” Averil skipped to the door. “I’m so happy for myself and Kira. You can tell Mom yourself when you come to my barbecue tomorrow. I won’t take no for an answer.” She rushed out the door.
“Obviously, she’s regained all her energy,” Lonato said. “What have I gotten myself into? When I marry you, I’ll be surrounded by three bossy women.”
Kira put her arms around his neck and her body against his. “You’ll love it.”
He stared deep into her eyes. “I think I will.”
Chapter Seventeen
Lonato opened the door to the house and carried her across the threshold. “As far as I’m concerned, this is your home. I don’t want you to go anywhere else.” He let her down inside the door.
“Don’t push too hard. You aren’t going to get out of working to convince me why I should marry you.”
“Where would you like me to start?”
“I’m hungry for lunch.”
He took her hand and led her to the kitchen. “I’ll feed you, but it saddens me that my cooking comes before other things.”
“Knowing you, I need the nourishment to keep up.”
“You’ve redeemed yourself a little with that remark.” He studied the contents of the refrigerator and freezer. “I have the ingredients to make an omelet. How does that sound?”
“I like omelets. Can I help?”
“No, go explore. You haven’t had a chance to really look over the whole house.”
Kira left him in the kitchen. She heard the classical music begin to play and smiled. She roamed from room to room. In Hakan’s room, she breathed in his familiar scent of exotic spices and musk. He was neat but not obsessive. A towel hung across the back of one chair.
Their cleaning lady must have been by since Kira had stayed in Hakan’s room. The spare room he’d used had been cleaned, polished, and everything was in its place. She wandered back to the kitchen.
“You have three bedrooms.”
Lonato glanced around from where he stood at the stove. “Is there a problem with having three?”
“You must not plan on a large family.”
He flipped the omelets onto plates just as the oven bell range. “I made biscuits. Hand me the basket to your left.”
She did, and in a few minutes he had them sitting at the table with their ham-and-cheese omelets, biscuits and jelly, and coffee. Lonato went to the refrigerator and got out a plate of cut-up fruit.
“This is a feast. If I don’t marry you, I’ll hire you as a cook.”
“You’re teasing. You are going to marry me.” He bent down and kissed her then sat in the chair across from her.
After they’d eaten a few bites, Kira put down her fork and sat back. “You didn’t answer my question about children.”
“To start with, Hakan and I are busy men, and we want to have time to enjoy our family. We’ve thought two, a boy and girl, would be the right number.”
“And what if you have two boys or two girls? If you had two girls you’d definitely have to try again for a boy.”
“Why?” He had a genuinely questioning look on his face.
“Men want boys, a little replica of themselves.”
“I don’t. I’ve watched the men of our tribe with their daughters. They’re completely happy with them. And who says my daughter can’t grow up to be a doctor? Or whatever she wants to be.”
“I’m surprised. Most men I’ve dated or talked to about children want boys.”
“Hakan and I aren’t most men, and those men weren’t members of our tribe.”
“I stand corrected.” She started to finish her meal.
“Did you want more children?”
Kira looked up. “No, two or maybe three will be fine, but I think you’d have to build onto the house.”
“We always planned to. After we have one child, we’ll get Nick to make up plans for more rooms to be added on.”
Kira got up from the table and took his hand. “Shall we go to the bedroom and work on creating one of those little girls?”

“I thought you’d never say you were ready.” He swung her into his arms and took long strides to the master bedroom then dropped her on the bed. He pulled her shirt off and her bra, then stared at her cream-colored breasts with their rose-colored nipples.
His hands closed around her breasts, and his thumb rubbed across her nipples. She sighed deeply. Her light purplish eyes had turned a darker purple. Lonato took a nipple into his mouth and sucked. His tongue licked and tasted. Kira moved restlessly under him.
Sitting back on his haunches, he tore off his shirt. Kira ran her hands across his chest. “I love the golden color of your skin.” Her fingers raked through the black hair narrowing down to the buckle on his belt. She undid the buckle and button. “I bet I can finish getting undressed faster than you.”
“I love a challenge.” He sprinted off the bed and had his clothes off in a minute. She was right behind, but he won.
“What do I get for winning?”
