ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
by Mickey Huff

I would like to broadly and sincerely thank everyone that has ever been part of Project Censored as we celebrate our thirty-fifth anniversary this year. From the founding days at Sonoma State University by Dr. Carl Jensen in 1976, who directed the Project for twenty years, through an additional fourteen annual yearbooks with Dr. Peter Phillips, to the present, where we now have over thirty colleges and universities worldwide helping to validate independent news and combat censorship in support of a free press, I emphatically thank everyone for their contributions to the success and longevity of this amazing and important Project. It is an honor to serve as the director as we forge into the twenty-first century where there is much work to do in establishing true media democracy. Without Carl and Peter, Project Censored would not exist, let alone be expanding in its didactic mission in 2011. For his vision and dedication, I thank Carl for creating such a significant vehicle to understand the value of a constitutionally protected free press while also laying the foundation for actually achieving one.

I want to personally thank Dr. Peter Phillips for not only continuing that mission and building upon it, but for mentoring me into the position of director the past several years, as his advice, counsel, and friendship have been invaluable. I continue to work closely with Peter through the Media Freedom Foundation, where he is president of the board. This work could not continue without his direct involvement and support. Most importantly, I thank my wife, Meg, and my family, for without their constant support, advice, and many sacrifices, I would not be where I am in my life, and would not be able to continue my work with such an important organization. For that, especially to Meg, I have the utmost love, respect, and gratitude. This book is dedicated to her, my daughter, and my late father.

Project Censored continues to be managed by the board of directors at the Media Freedom Foundation (MFF), a nonprofit corporation based in Sonoma County, California, which has close operational ties to Diablo Valley College, Sonoma State University, and San Francisco State University. The Project now operates with the help of thirty other colleges and universities around the world. We are an investigative research and media analysis project dedicated to journalistic integrity and the freedom of information throughout the world. Thanks go to all of those involved on the MFF board, the National Judges, all respective college and university affiliates, and a special thanks goes to all the independent journalists in this year’s volume.

At Diablo Valley College, where I teach, I would like to thank the Dean of Social Sciences Ellen Kruse, Hedy Wong, outgoing history chair Greg Tilles,
Dr. Matthew Powell, Dr. Lyn Krause, Dr. Steve Johnson, Dr. Manual Gonzalez, Dr. Robert Abele, Jacob Van Vleet, David Vela, Adam Bessie, Obed Vazquez, Dr. Jeremy Cloward, Dr. Amer Araim, Bruce Lerro, Jeffrey Michels, and especially my teaching assistants Kelli Baumgartner, James Sy Cowie, Kira McDonough, Ryan “Green Lantern” Shehee, and Laura Whitsett, as well as past students that continue to provide great assistance and support to the Project including Nolan Higdon, Kajal Shahali, and “Metal” Mike Smith.

Also, thanks goes to the Social Justice Committee at the Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists for their support in hosting Project Censored for the monthly “Empire, Power, and Propaganda” lecture series; Bill Gibbons for his longtime contributions to Project Censored, and Trish Boreta for her continued assistance in editing; and many thanks to friends of the Project including Ralph Nader, Dahr Jamail, Dr. John Ely, Dr. Paul Rea, Dr. Marc Sapir, Dr. Michael Parenti, Kristina Borjesson, Nora Barrows-Friedman, David Mathison, Rob Williams, Brian Murphy, Chris Finan, the American Library Association and Banned Books Week, Netfa Freeman, Dave Heller, Carol Brouillet, Ken Jenkins, Stephen Lendman, Shawn Hamilton, Michel Chossudovsky, Bonnie Faulkner, Bruce Brugmann, Peter B. Collins, Allan Rees, Terri Perticone, Vic Sadot, Atilla Nagy, Rebel Fagin, Chris Cox and the Junkyard Empire, Josh Switky, Richard Becker, the Artist General Michael Masley, Mihai Manoliu, Barry Cleveland, Alan Warner, Jahni Misja, Nate Mudd, Blake Bresnahan, Dr. Fred Viehe, Dr. Martin Berger, Dr. Louis Zona, Joan Berezin, Mary Alice and the Mount Diablo Peace and Justice Center, the Cheeseboard Collective, all at Cesar in Berkeley, City Lights Books, Moe’s Books, Busboys and Poets, independent bookstores everywhere, ECPC for providing community, a personal thanks to Kate, Sheffield, Ali, Brandon, Matt, Bruce, Jan, Tei, Fran, Toe, and anyone else that has touched the Project in some supportive way this past year. Cheers to you all!

A big thank you goes to the people at Seven Stories Press. They publish some of the most important works concerning political, cultural, and societal issues today, and they edit our annual book in record time. The people at Seven Stories continue to be great advisors in the annual release process of the
Censored
volume. Publisher Dan Simon is dedicated to building democracy in America through knowledge and literature. He deserves accolades for assembling an excellent support team including Jon Gilbert (layout and design), Veronica Liu (our lead editor), Ruth Weiner, Anne Rumberger, Stewart Cauley, Gabe Espinal, Liz DeLong, Astrid Cook, Linda Trepanier, Crystal Yakacki, Silvia Stramenga, and Jeanne Thornton, as well as interns Sophia Ioannou, Erica Olschansky, Eva Fortes, and Rhoda Feng. Additional thanks goes to Random House Publisher Services.

Special thanks to Jodi and Bill at the Jodi Solomon Speakers Bureau in Boston for their longtime support with arranging speaking engagements at various colleges and universities nationwide. Proceeds from these appearances are a continuing financial supplement to Project Censored. We look forward to continuing that relationship into the future.

Peter Phillips and I would like to personally thank all of the people that have supported us in our co-hosting endeavors at KPFA 94.1 FM and Pacifica Radio for
The Project Censored Show
(on The Morning Mix and Flashpoints programs), especially Arlene Engelhardt, Andrew Phillips, Carrie Core, Anthony Fest, Adrienne Lauby, Tara Dorabji, Carmen Reed, Leslie Stovall, Dennis Bernstein, Miguel Molina, Davey D, Erica Bridgeman, J. R. Valrey, Braxter Timerlake, Anita Johnson, Richard Phelps, Tracy Rosenberg, Steve Zeltzer, Tiny and the Poor News Network, Stan Woods, Bonnie Faulkner of Guns and Butter, and all other supportive staff and community members.

Thanks to our International and National Judges; some have been involved with the Project for thirty-five years and are among the top experts in the world concerned with First Amendment freedoms and media principles. We are honored to have them as the final voice in ranking the top twenty-five
Censored
stories along with our college and university affiliate participants each year.

We also would like to show gratitude to our webmaster, the extraordinary Adam Armstrong. We acknowledge Shah Baig for technical support and intern David Quintana for office support.

We also welcome our new relationship with Dorothy Andersen on the Fair Sharing of the Common Heritage project and awards. We are honored to work with her to further her late husband Alfred F. Andersen’s work and we thank Mary Lia for taking leadership in fostering this very promising relationship.

This year’s book,
Censored 2012
, again features the cartoons of Khalil Bendib. We appreciate his continued support and talents as his brilliant editorial work so enhances our content.

Thanks to this year’s contributing authors who made the
Censored 2012
volume what it is, including (with some repetition for thanks from elsewhere here) Peter Phillips, Elliot D. Cohen, Andrew Roth, Kenn Burrows, Tom Atlee, Elaine Wellin, Kristen Seraphin, Joel Evans-Fudem, Amy Ortiz, Dean Walker, Adam Bessie, Abby Martin, Nolan Higdon, Clifton Roy Damiens, Tracy Rosenberg, Jeff Cohen, Lisa Graves, Josh Wolf, Khalil Bendib, Emma Cape, Logan Price, Ryan Shehee, yari ojeda-sandel, Alexandre Silva, Salma Habib, Casey Goonan, Randal Marlin, Jacob Van Vleet, Robert Abele, Anthony DiMaggio, Mary Lia, Cynthia Boaz, Ann Garrison, Jon Elmer, Robin Andersen, Margaret Flowers, Ina May Gaskin, and all the Project Censored interns, faculty, and students.

Last but not least, we thank you, the readers and supporters from all over the US and the world. Hundreds of you nominated stories for consideration as censored news stories, and we thank you and urge you to continue your vigilance in our collective struggle against censorship.
